Summer Reading Assignment for Students Entering Third Grade
2015 – 2016
Students entering third grade in September are required to read a total of three books over the
summer. Students must complete one fiction and one non-fiction book report (see attached).
Each book report will count as a project grade. The students can then choose their favorite of
the three books and complete one of the following projects as the last assignment.
Newspaper Article: Pretend you are reporting on the story you just read. You should include the
who, what, when, where, why and how of the story. For example: Who were the
characters? Where did the story take place? What was the problem? Include the beginning,
middle, and end of your story, giving the main ideas. The article should be written in paragraph
form using complete sentences. Finally, give your article a title and a “byline” (Who wrote the
story?). The article should be handwritten neatly on lined paper. Please include the title and
author of the book on the back of your article. The newspaper article should include an
illustration with a caption depicting an important scene from the book.
Quadrama: A quadrama is four triaramas put together. The first triarama should be about the
characters. You may draw pictures of the characters, print them from the computer, or cut them
from a newspaper or a magazine. You may include symbols that are important to the characters.
You may write character names or symbol descriptions. The second triarama is about the setting
or settings. The third triarama will reflect the conflict, and the fourth will reflect the
conclusion. You will need to give a short oral explanation on the elements of your quadrama once
school gets underway.
Timeline: A timeline is a simple way to tell a story. Pick 6-8 important events in the story and put
them in order on a timeline. This should be done on a piece of poster board, cut to the length you
need. The events should be in the order that they happened in the story. Each event should
have a picture that gives an idea about what is happening and have at least two complete
sentences to tell about the event. Be sure to include character names and other important details
from the book. The pictures may be neatly hand-drawn, printed from the computer, or cut from
a newspaper or magazine. Be creative! You may decorate your timeline and/or include symbols and
pictures that tell about the story.

Square a piece of paper by making a diagonal fold where the top edge and one side edge overlap. Cut off any excess. 2. Unfold the square and refold in the opposite direction of the first fold to make a crease. Unfold completely. The two fold lines should make an “X”. 3. Cut along one of the folds up to the center point. Rotate paper so that it looks like a diamond and the cut line points directly toward you. Draw the background scene on the top half. 4. Completely overlap the two triangles created by the cut to form an open pyramid. Glue to secure. Be careful to secure along the edges, but not use too much glue. 5. To make a Quadrama, glue 4 triaramas back-‐to-‐back. Hint: If quadrama is to be hung up, glue a piece of cardboard underneath, otherwise the bottom of each section will sag.
