Part I
A. The Road Not Taken\ Robert Frost
1) 1. It wasn’t straight.
2) 2. He could never take the other road.
3) "This" refers to the story of how he stood in the forest with two
roads ahead of him and chose one of them.
4) The speaker knows that he has an important decision to make. He
knows that the road he takes could change his life forever and that's why
he has to think about it for a long time.
5) a. Thinking skill I chose: Explaining cause and effect.
In the quote the speaker says that the choice he made on that day
changed his life. He knows that if he had taken the other road he might
have ended up in a different place in his life.
b. I chose this thinking skill because I looked at the effect the choice
of the road had on the speaker and that if he had taken the other road it
would have had a different effect on him.
6) a. I think that people say the song is about regret because the speaker
uses the words "I shall be telling this with a sigh". A sigh is usually an
expression people use when something bad happens so the speaker might
be thinking that he had made the wrong choice.
2
b. I don’t agree with the interpretation in 6a. I think that the speaker
is happy about the choice he made. He says in the final line "and that
made all the difference". I think he knows that if he had taken the other
road his life could have been worse.
B. Count That Day Lost\ George Elliot
7) 4. Feel good about yourself.
8) 2. You haven’t helped another person.
9) The speaker means that you helped another person without any
personal gain or asking for something in return.
10) I think the poet uses the word "sunshine" because sunshine
represents something bright and happy. It also represents hope and light.
11) a. Thinking skill I chose: Explaining cause and effect.
I think the poet named the song "count the day lost" because it helps to
make the message that you should help people stronger and if you have a
change to make someone else's day better but don’t take it then your day
is wasted.
b. I chose this thinking skill because I can see that the cause of
helping people has the effect of making the day well spent while the
cause of being selfish has the effect of making the day lost.
3
12) a. The message of the poem is that if you see a chance to help other
people by any means you should take it because it will make your day
better and make you proud of yourself.
b. I can apply the message of the poem to my life in many ways. One
way can be to volunteer for charity and another can be just to give kind
words to people and encourage them.

Part II
C. The Treasure of Lemon Brown
13) 2. He doesn’t want to study math.
14) 3. Lemon Brown throws himself down the stairs.
15) He was a very good Blues singer.
16) a. Thinking skill I used: Compare and contrast.
Lemon Brown knew that the fact that he was famous gave his son
confidence and made him proud. Brown wants Greg to also be proud of his
father and look up to him.
b. I chose this thinking skill because I compared between the
relationships of Lemon Brown and his son and Greg and his father.
17) a. Greg smile when he thought of the lecture his father would give him
because he was glad that his father is alive and that he cares so much for
him.
b. At the beginning of the story Greg is angry at his father for not
letting him play basketball because of his grades. By the end of the story
Greg is happy that he has a father who cares for him and wants him to
succeed in life.

Part III-Bridging Text and Context
D. Introduction to Poetry\ Billy Collins
18) The quote says that when people read poetry all they want is to find a
definite meaning as if this is the only thing that is important in a poem.
This is exactly the problem that is written about in "Introduction to
Poetry." Like in the quote, the poem tells us that because we spend so
much time looking for the meaning we don't manage to enjoy the
experience of the poem. The poet suggests we should listen to the sounds
of a poem and experience it with our senses as well.
E. A Summer's Reading\ Bernard Malamud
19) In the story, Malamud talks about immigrants that live in a poor, ugly
neighborhood. People work in low-paying jobs, like George's sister Sophie
who works in a cafeteria. People's lives are hard and sometimes they feel
they can't change, like Mr. Cattanzara. (But Malamud also shows how
George, who dropped out of high school, has dreams of a better life and
that George might have a better future if he gets an education and
starts reading /working hard.)
6
F. The Split Cherry Tree\ Jesse Stuart
20) There are many parts of the story which are similar to Stuart's life.
Dave is also from a poor family of farmers. Pa from the story received
only a basic education of reading, writing and ciphering. Pa taught Dave to
value education and tells him that he "must go on at school". Unlike Jesse
Stuart Pa did not trust the school education his son was getting at the
beginning and thought it was a waste of time. But after visiting the school
he learned to appreciate it.
