Grade 10: Excellence in Action Alberta’s Highest Honour The Grade 10 social studies resource will allow students to draw upon the experiences of the members of the Alberta Order of Excellence in order to address opportunities and challenges of globalization. This resource will challenge students to utilize the AOE content to examine their own roles and responsibilities as citizens in a globalizing world and consider what strategies might be implemented to demonstrate active and responsible citizenship. The resource will support Grade 10 social studies teachers in helping students explore the question: “In what ways can we take action to address issues in a globalizing world?” Use your learnalberta.ca account to access this resource online at: http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/ssaoe10/index.html The Alberta Order of Excellence is the highest honour the Province of Alberta can bestow on a citizen. Members of the Alberta Order of Excellence come from all walks of life. Their careers range from medicine, science, engineering, law, business and the military to politics, education, agriculture and the arts. The one thing all members have in common is that they have made an outstanding provincial, national, or international impact. The Alberta Order of Excellence is about more than simply doing one’s job well. It’s about recognizing Albertans who have made a difference, who have served Albertans with excellence and distinction, and whose contributions will stand the test of time. Students have the opportunity to demonstrate critical thinking by examining and then selecting photos, video clips, phrases and symbols to include in a movie that tells the story of one member. As they justify their selections, students will reflect upon the people, places and stories of Alberta and learn about members of the Order as active responsible citizens and how they have contributed to shaping the evolution of Alberta. Students have the opportunity to demonstrate critical thinking by examining excerpts from actual Alberta Order of Excellence nomination packages. They are asked to select the examples that best meet the provided criteria. After mastering the criteria, they will rate the strength of evidence of these criteria found in the nomination packages for five fictional candidates for the new Order of Excellence. After justifying the ratings, the students will rank the candidates in order based on who they most strongly recommend for investiture into the new Order of Excellence.
