Count larger quantities of numbers by counting in twos, fives and tens. Practise recognising numerals, saying the numeral names and begin to write them. Can your child count a number of objects accurately? Do they understand that if the objects are re-arranged the total remains the same? Can they match the correct numeral to a group of objects? Can they order numbers? Can they say what is ‘one more’ or one less’? Look out for and spot numerals which are all around us: Birthday cards In shops In books Door numbers Road signs Number plates Buttons Pebbles Sticks Paper clips Jigsaw puzzles Coins Cutlery laying the table Toys Make mistakes when counting, can your child spot them and correct them? Say, practise and learn number rhymes e.g. ten green bottles, five little speckled frogs, five fat sausages, one, two buckle my shoe Get active! e.g. clap 5 times, skip 10 times, jump seven times Play games that involve counting e.g. snakes and ladders, ludo, junior monopoly, other board games, hopscotch, skipping, playing cards Put numbers on skittles. Can your child knock over the skittles in order? Can your child knock over a given number? Can they knock over ‘one more’ or ‘one less’ than a given number? Can they knock over numbers that total five? Can they knock over the highest number? The lowest number? etc.
