Catherine Scott took up the bassoon at 17, studied at the Royal Academy of Music, then at Dartington.
She worked as a theatre musician before moving north to teach woodwind for the Cumbria Music Service.
From her base in Troutbeck she plays in the Lakeland Sinfonia and tutors wind players in the Westmorland
Youth Orchestra. She is successfully promoting the bassoon as an instrument for younger children to learn.
Ruth Watton started playing the clarinet aged 11 and played in City and County Youth Orchestras in Lincoln.
Having studied Geography and English at University she came to Kendal to take up a job in IT. Music is an
important hobby - she plays for shows, in chamber music and is a member of the Westmorland Orchestra.
Sarah Barkway took up the flute at 14 and studied at the London College of Music and has taught music in
the Bahamas and the Channel Islands. Returning to Kendal and her northern roots in 2001 she teaches for
the Cumbria Music Service and plays in the Lakeland Sinfonia and Lakes Ensemble.
Rachel Malloch has played the oboe from the age of 13. She studied Natural Sciences at University and did
research in Plant Physiology, before spending twenty years combining family life with publishing chamber
music for wind instruments. She plays in chamber music groups, is a member of the Lakeland Sinfonia and of
the Haffner and Westmorland Orchestras. She lives in Lancaster.
Ken Forster has a Trinity College Diploma in piano accompaniment, enabling him to work with choirs, singers
and instrumentalists in workshops and masterclasses, and for shows. He has performed at Hawkshead
several times and also sings with Levens Choir. When not playing the piano, he can often be found away from
his home in Kendal, on the hills of the Lake District or in the South of France.
Tonight’s collection will be in aid of
our beautiful Church and the other
charities listed on the noticeboard.
