THOUGHTS FROM THE COUCH
I am no longer my own, but thine.
Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt;
Put me to doing, put me to suffering;
Let me be employed for thee or laid aside for thee,
exalted for thee or brought low for thee;
let me be full, let me be empty;
let me have all things, let me have nothing;
I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal.
And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
Thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it.
And the covenant which I have made on earth,
Let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. John Wesley’s Covenant Prayer
These two weeks of confinement with my foot up, have been challenging,
but great shaping moments for God to really get a hold of my spirit. May 24th I will
check back in with the doctor to see how things are going. I am grateful for this
time of healing (most of the time). I have made several new friends. I look forward
to watching the little green chameleon run across the top of the fence, as he stops
to puff up his red neck every few steps to attract a lady. I have spent several hours
marveling at the endurance and loyalty spent by a sparrow couple flying back and
forth feeding their two yellow-mouthed off- spring in the little blue birdhouse on the
patio.
I am learning to completely
trust my life in God’s hands and be
content. It reminds me of learning to
float. Being content to “waste time”
with God is like “floating on water”.
Floating is not really difficult, but it
demands much letting go. We try to
keep ourselves rigid, ready to save
ourselves the moment a big wave
comes along, but the more rigid we
are, the more likely we are to be
swamped by the waves.
To learn to float, it seems, is essentially to learn to trust, first the teacher
and then the water. I am learning to be at home “in the water of life.”
Each meal that Jody and I eat together reminds me that we are sitting down
to dine with each of you who have graciously prepared such delicious food. Thank
you for the prayers, flowers, cards, phone calls and the food.
Peace be to you and your households,
In Christ, JoNell

Just a little bragging
on some of our church family....
Sammy Christlieb is marrying Shanelle Tennyson
this weekend, and congratulations and blessings on
them both! But there is something else you might
not know about Sammy that is pretty special. He
lets his hair grow out long and then cuts it and
donates it to an organization that makes hairpieces
for people who have lost their hair due to illness
and chemo treatments. Isn’t that terrific?
Our own Bob Mason was honored last Saturday for
25 years of service at Scottish Rite hospital. Great
job, Bob!

IMAGINE NO MALARIA
Beginning the 5th Sunday in May we will be
working in conjunction with the United Methodist
Church to make our congregation aware of the
threat of Malaria and the things that are being
done to help stamp out this disease in Africa.
Every forty-five seconds a child dies from Malaria
in Africa.
In the past we provided Mosquito nets to help
stamp out this disease. Imagine No More Malaria
helps us take the next step in this fight. Think of it
as Nets Plus. The Plan being put in place will
consist of the empowering the African people,
prevention, medicine, treatment, improving
infrastructure, and communication. The United
Methodist Church is being joined in the fight by
the Gates foundation and United Nations.
In the next few weeks you will be seeing and
hearing more regarding what is being done and
how you can help make this plan a success. All
the Adult Sunday School Classes will meet
together in the Fellowship Hall on May 29th, 5th
Sunday, for a special presentation on

TOES ABOVE YOUR NOSE
When my surgeon gave me these instructions, and said
that I would need to be in this position for 2-3 weeks, I
had no clue, what a challenge it would be. So, I wait upon the Lord’s
good healing to take place in the bones that have been reconstructed in
my foot. One good thing about being forced to be still, is that I have
become ever more aware of Christ’s presence and nearness to my soul.
As I sit and gaze out the windows at the trees moving gently in the
breeze, I can actually see how the Psalmist noticed that the trees clap
their hands.
I have had time to read and pray and meditate on how good our God
is and how very much He loves every one of us. I have been swept off
my feet (no pun intended) with the generosity and love and prayers. It is
a brand new experience for me to be on the receiving end of God’s love
manifest in and through others acts of kindness. The cards are uplifting,
the prayers have given me such peace and the delicious food has
nourished Jody and I both. We say Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
When I was a voice major in my undergraduate work, we were given
the opportunity to adjudicate at the district and state levels of music
contest (UIL). I remember the year I judged, one song was very
popular. After I had listened to over 30 renditions of “O Wait, on the
Lord, Wait Patiently for Him” from Elijah, it made me laugh out loud
when that song came to my mind as I sat and looked out at God’s
beautiful sunshine ……………….and waited.
All is well. Thanks be to God,
whose steadfast love endures forever.

THANKS TO OUR "VILLAGE
Some time ago - it seems like only yesterday - our twin
grandsons were born in Houston. They were so early and so
small. We turned to you, our extended family, for prayers for
Ruff and Tuff. And they made it!!!
An update - the twins turned 13 on May 16th.
We shall always be eternally grateful for the prayers and
support afforded our family at that time. Being a part of this
church 'village' has been such a source of comfort for a lot, but
never more than at this time in our lives.
Thank you so much - and God bless.

Jesus Loves ME - a Big Hit
Sunday, May 8 was the end of the choir year for the Sonshine Choir and
their performance of the mini-musical "Jesus Loves ME" was great. The
choir sang - of course- and they acted, they even practiced their various
skills: recorder, guitar, painting, basketball, soccer, hulla hooping, reading,
jump roping, playing with their iPod, even riding a bicycle. All things that
children do Saturdays or Sundays ...if they aren't going to church. They
sang about David and Goliath and they told the story about the Good
Samaritan. Why, they even got the congregation to join them in singing. Our
"kids" were amazing. I saw several people taking videos and pictures of the
choir. I really would appreciate you sharing your pictures with me for my
archives.
Thanks for supporting the children. I want to extend my appreciation to all
the parents for helping during choir and especially bringing snacks for them
each week. It is amazing how a few snacks help the children concentrate
during choir rehearsals. I would also be remiss if I didn't mention Charles
Self and his wonderful trees that he shared with us. They really helped set
the scene.
June 13, seven members of the Sonshine Choir will be leaving for choir
camp. This was made possible by your generous purchase of Shares that
helped defray the cost of the camp. I'm sure you will be hearing more about
the camp in June.
As always, I encourage you to . . . Make Your Life a Song to God

Godspell Performance This Saturday
This coming Saturday, May 21 at 6:30pm, the Youth Choir of FUMC-Allen
will present the exciting musical Godspell. Forty-five members of the choir
and youth band will perform this wonderful musical before taking it on tour in
June. This performance could be the highlight of your week. So bring your
neighbors, cousins, aunts, just anyone you can and lets fill the sanctuary for
this exciting event.
The choir and band will arrive at 3:00pm to rehearse and then at 5:00pm we
will feed then a snack supper. The menu is Frito Pie, salad, cookies and
tea/water to drink. If you can help the Chancel Choir to feed the group,
please call me at church or leave me a message and I will get back with
you. It would be greatly appreciated.
Smile on May 23rd

It’s time for the Cabel kids to have their dental work done. We have been asked to provide 1 or 2 volunteers,
who can sit with the kids while having the work done and walk them back to class. You may do this for ½ the
day or all day 9:00 – 2:30. If you would like to volunteer, please call Dawn right away, and fill out a DISD
background check online.
A great big Thank You to our teachers!
We thanked our Sunday School teachers last Sunday with a certificate. But, we can’t really thank them enough.
These teachers bring life into our church. We have children who come to Sunday School even without their
parents. Some even get picked up to go home or to another church after the Sunday School hour. This says a
lot about the amazing quality of these classes. The kids are learning about Jesus’ love through active
participation.

THANK YOU Chapel Hill family for the wonderful response in support of the

CHILDREN’S CORNER –Dawn Self
There’s no reason to be out of the loop!
Have you been wondering what the children are doing? Check the
children’s bulletin board in the main hall way or the children’s Sunday
school bulletin board in the entrance to the children’s wing. There is always
a list of current events and there are sign up sheets for volunteer
opportunities. If you would like to sign up to shepherd with Message
Experience, just put your name on a blank line. This is a fun, fairly easy job
that involves sitting with children, but not teaching the lesson. If you would
like to lead a children’s sermon, I have information about how to do that.
You don’t have to write the children’s sermon, unless you want to, because
I have liturgically relevant sermons ready to go. We still have one opening
in June just for you.
VBS information is out! Have you noticed the bright blue and red posters?
Check them out.
Adult VBS will be August 1st – 4th
Children’s VBS will be August 7th – 11th
Summer Sack Assembly
- Reach Out With Outreach! Yes, it's that time again!
Time to gather
up our helpers and assemble the summer sacks for our Cabell Elementary
students. We will be assembling them this Sunday after potluck in a new and
improved assembly line process. As the saying goes, if we aren't finished
within 30 minutes, "I'll eat my hat!" We have some fun, helpful goodies for the
students this year - crayons, a neon bouncy ball, a motivational
pencil, fun worksheets (including requested math practice sheets),
VBS flier, and a book! What a great way to reach God's precious little ones!
Thank you for your continued support of this ministry!

Questions & Answers
- Level of frustration is high with no Task Force
Information to congregation
- Met with “chairs” of each church’s
committees and discussed how things work in their
respective churches
- There are minutes of these Task Force
meetings that will be made available to the
congregation
- Lack of conference representative
attendance to Task Force Meeting to answer
questions
- 2008 Book of Discipline for Financial
questions
- What is needed for merger process to continue
- Each church must say “yes” - the conference
cannot force the issue
- The final decision can be made at the All
Church Meeting (congregation vote)
- What happens to property if “yes” to merger
- Sell both properties - acquire new land and
build new church - money is held for the new entity
- Sell 1 property and live in the other - money
can be used for building enhancement only (not
salaries or operating expenses)
- Sale of property has to be brought before
Charge Conference
- Perhaps need to make a list of questions
needed answered to make informed decision
- Church building - move or stay
- Allocate resources
- How do we minister?
- Demographics of locations
- Perhaps hear from others churches that
have experienced a merger
- If a church is having difficulty, it must realize
where it is in the life cycle
- Die - go out strong - give property to
Conference to use/sell
- Don’t sell church - keep on worshipping
until it dies
- Merge and grow
- If we agree to merge and cannot come to
agreement of terms with both churches, we can
cancel.
Webb Chapel has decided not to close, but to
continue the Merger Task Force.Dr. Clara
Reed lifted the “suspended” order on the
Task Force . Chapel Hill showed a consensus
to continue with the Merger Task Force. We
will move forward. 61 in attendance. Meeting
adjourned.
Respectfully submitted, Patsy Kaphengst,

THANKS AHEAD FOR YOUR PRAYERS
Dear congregation,
In case you were not able to be in worship this past
Sunday, I simply want to reiterate that I will be in surgery
Tuesday, May 10 for reconstruction of my foot. I will be off my
foot for the next three weeks.
The Lord has blessed us with “superstar” preachers who
have agreed to come and worship with us and bring the

YEA, GOD!!!!!!
This Second Sunday in Easter tide,
May 1, 2011, was a grand day of celebration
for us Chapel ‘Hillians’. We welcomed four
eager confirmands into this body of Christ
and then came the happy surprise of also
welcoming the families of two of our
confirmands. Our God is a God of surprises
and we live leaning into the future with
hope for God’s gracious leading.
We welcome Daniel Bandy, Abrie Salazar, Claire Smith, and Kenneth
Warner as our new confirmands. Many times new disciples feel that
committing to prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness in an established
body of Christ means they are completed, they are accomplished. In fact, the
opposite is true. The journey of faith is just beginning. These confirmands
have covenanted to live their lives in Christ’s Way. The congregation promised
to nurture and council and love them to perfection.
We also welcome our newest members; Amie, Erick, and Jessie Salazar
into our midst. The Salazar family came to join this congregation of the
United Methodist Church by transfer of membership from Webb Chapel
United Methodist Church. We welcome them home with the love of the Lord
and will enfold them into this flock with love and joy. Also coming to transfer
their membership is Christy Warner and her children Khalil, Kamarie, and
Kerston. Grandmother Annette Brown also came to join Chapel Hill UMC.
Christy is Kenneth Warner’s mother and Annette is Kenneth’s grandmother.
Annette has been a faithful and very capable dietitian and cook for our
Project Transformation Summer Day Camp the last two years and will do so
again this summer. The Warner/Browns have been involved in the mission and
outreach of Chapel Hill for many years and now it is official. Glory be to God !
All is well. May the 50 great days of Easter tide
continue to be a blessing.
