BLUE & GOLD
A note from the chair & editor
by Ian Evans
March 2012
Welcome to the second of the new Aberystwyth AC newsletter. I
hope everyone enjoyed the previous revamped issue. I have been
busily collected many reports and important information for this
edition.
I thought I might begin by just saying how things are going with my
own running. I have been keeping away from what you might call the
club scene, as I’ve been busy following a training plan for the upand-coming Shakespeare marathon in the end of April. The plan
began way back over the Christmas week and it does seem to have
taken over much of my present life. With only 6 weeks to go now. I
feel as strong and fast as ever. The important thing is to keep myself
injury free, so out comes the foam roller and resistance band at every
possible occasion. This is the longest I have maintained a high
milage program without getting injured, so there must be something
said about the one I’m following.
The most exciting news I had recently was when I received an e-mail
saying that I had won this month’s parkrun competition and I could
claim a free pair of trainers. All those early Saturday mornings
helping out seem very much worth it. It is the year of the volunteer,
so I’m always ready to help out, but to get something like this does
mean a lot.
Happy running

Club league update
League Update – Mid March 2014
This report is a little late due to the changes
with the newsletter and mainly covers races in
January and February. Only one race in
January – the Twin Piers, and only one runner
meant there was no a great deal to report.
Heading in February, the continuing storms
took a toll on many races; Tarren Hendre was
shortened, whilst fierce winds and rains were
always about. Despite this our runners were
out and about in force- performing well to
achieve wins, personal and season’s best
times.
Main League Divisions Update
Maintaining great form in Ladies Platinum Anita
Worthing set her best time for two years in
Tregaron to remain ahead of Louise Barker
who took 1st Lady honours in the shortened
Ras Tarren Hendre and who’s 1:33:26 2nd place
at Tregaron was nearly 3 minutes faster than
last year.
Still in 1st place in Men’s Platinum is Gancho
Slavov. In 2nd place is Dave Powell who pulled
back a couple of points against Gancho after
taking age category prizes at both Ras Tarren
Hendre and Tregaron. Newly qualified in 3rd
place is Felipe Jones who took 1st place at both
races. In fourth place is John Evans whose
fantastic seasons best 44:54 at Llandudno
Twin Piers gave him an extra 1.6 points to take
him above Gethin Holland. Gethin meanwhile
continues a great year of improvement with a
1:20:02 half marathon pb that gave him to 3rd
place at Tregaron. Shelley Childs is now in 6th
place.
There are no changes in Ladies Gold where
Helen Wiliams maintains the position she took
over from Maureen Pritchard in December.
In Men’s Gold Ian Evans is still ahead of Keith
Richards in the first two spots. Norman Biggs
moves into third place after posting 1:29:57 at
Tregaron. Goronwy Evans drops to fourth
place but edged his score forward to stay in
contention for the third spot. Following the last
report advising Paul Rose that he needed to
improve his Long category score his 1:31:13 in
Tregaron gave him the boost to leave him
snapping on Goronwy’s heels.
Lina Lesutiene and Marj Griffiths were the only
runner’s in Ladies Diamond this month.
Unfortunately Lina’s 1:52:01 at Tregaron
didn’t bring her any more points whereas Marj
lifted her overall score by half a point after her
1:04:28 at Llandudno Twin Piers. Elaine
There were no runners from Men’s Diamond
this month so the championship battle remains
locked between Edd Land and Richard
Anthony.
Hollie Wynne braved the storm conditions at
Tarren Hendre to complete the shortened
course in 1:03:58; she remains top of Ladies
Sapphire. None of the other places have
changed and so Rhian Meredith and Emma
Davies still hold 2nd and 3rd places.
In Men’s Sapphire Tim Davies remains the only
qualifier. Adriano Evola has added points and a
category to take over in 2nd place and, with
one more race could qualify and mount a
serious challenge on Tim’s position. Equally
poised to challenge is Pete Garson who only
needs a race in one more category to qualify.
The Trail League
Adding to a string of 1st place wins Felipe
Jones’ 37:36 at Tarren Hendre has moved him
to the top spot in the Men’s Trail division. His
win gives him a huge 50 point lead over
Gancho Slavov in second spot and this pushes
Dave Powell into third place.
In the Ladies division Louise Barker is the only
qualifier; a time of 54:06 to take 1st Lady at
Tarren Hendre sees her continuing to hold the
top spot.
With only one Trail race remaining it looks as
though the men’s division is pretty sown up –
however, with only 9.5 points between them,
Dave Powell still faces a threat for 3rd place
from Norman Biggs.
Louise Barker is unbeatable in the Ladies
division and all that remains is whether any
other will be any contenders for the 2nd and 3rd
spots. As it stands Kate O’Sullivan, Anita
Worthing and Eunice Carter are the only
runners who can stake a claim on these
positions. What stands in their way? Ras Yr
Aran!!
STOP PRESS!!!!
Some great running in March with races all well
attended by Aber AC runners. In our 5Mile time
trial runners didn’t seem to be too phased by
the sand dunes on the prom, The winner was
Richard Anthony in a pb of 31:36 whilst first
lady was Louise Barker whose 32:57 sets a
new course record. Gethin Holland won the
Rhayader 5M with a new pb of 27:45 and
Felipe Jones was the winner at Ras Gwyl Dewi
in 34:17. Cameron Pope took part in both
races. In the Rhayader 20 Dave Powell was
first in for the club in 2:21:57 with Louise
Barker first club lady in 2:33:40. There was
also some very impressive running from John
Evans 2:51:23 1st M65 and Anita Worthing
2:53:42 1st F55 - both times that people of
any age would be proud of. Well done to
everyone else who took part in that race –
many of you first timers and the pacers and a
welcome sighting of Cliff Thomas. It can also
be reported that a rare sighting of Adriano
Evola and Norman Biggs was made at Ras
Gwyl Dewi.
All these results have gone into the League;
some things have changed, some things have
become incredibly tight and there are going to
be some shocks.
With only one race left in the calendar Ras yr
Aran on 22nd March, there is still time to play
your optional races. If anyone has any race
results that haven’t already been added
to the League you have until March 31st
to tell me about them.

RACE REPORTS:
Ras Cors Caron (Tregaron) 1/2 marathon Sunday 9th February
By Kevin Holland
Twelve good men and women represented the club at last month’s Tregaron ½ marathon. In
windy and cold conditions the race was won by Felipe Jones in 1:17:43 with Gethin Holland
finishing third in 1:20:02. Louise Barker was second in the women’s race in 1:33:36 just behind
Ann Thomas from TROTs finishing in 1:31:08. Congratulations also to Lina Lesutiene, Gemma
Cutter and Lynnette Peck who I understand were all running the ½ marathon distance for the
first time and commiserations to Hollie Wynne who had to withdraw after several miles due to
a painful injury. As usual the event was organised excellently with the usual cawl on
prescription in the rugby club guaranteed to assisting in speeding up the thawing process.

The Llanddewi Brefi 10K (Sunday 9th March)
By Adriano Evola
This race was a last minute decider, having done the 5 mile T/T on the Tuesday before it
gave me an idea how I would run, and so then I gave it a go. I have already run this race
before but a few years ago now. It’s not one of the best 10k courses it has many hills. I
travelled down with Norman and got there in good time register at the village school,
which cost £10. Weather was very warm and I think it was one of the warmest of the
year so far. Cameron and Felipe and few ladies from the C5K group were also there and
the usual Sarn Helen runners. About 43 ran with Norman finishing in 39. Camaron 48,
Adriano 50. Felipe won by a few minutes ahead of second place. Not sure times Hannah
Monday lady or C5K Ladies. Afterwards there was the usual Cawl, veg soup, cheese
and roll, followed by presentations. I didn’t get my trophy this time but the day was
enjoyable for running.
Rhayader "Round-the-Lakes" 20 mile race, 8th March 2014
You never know what weather to expect round the Elan Valley in March - blizzards last
year, gales and rain a fortnight ago for our practice run - but this year, for the 30th
anniversary of this race, conditions were dry, warm and sunny! Rhayader was packed
with nervous runners from all over the UK including quite a few from Aberystwyth. I
had pre-fuelled with black coffee and a bacon bap and had packed a couple of gels to
keep me going on the way round, everything seemed to be in working order so we lined
up at the start, exchanged the usual banter, and promptly at 13.00hrs - we were off!
The race starts with a lap round the town, cheered on by the crowds of spectators. Note
Maureen and Cliff in the middle of the picture!
The route then continues up the never-ending hill on the old Aberystwyth road, where
fortunately the wind was behind us, then on down the hairpins back to Rhayader via the
reservoirs – where the wind was head-on and quite strong, but warm!
The scenery is absolutely stunning all the way round, including the detour through Elan
Village, and this year I comfortably ran all the way without breaking into a walk except
when I choked on a jelly-baby. I was still amazed to win my age category though, for
the first time having run it 6 times!
Aberystwyth AC did very well for prizes overall, even though some members were not
“racing” but using it as a marathon training run.
First male back was Jonathan Pugh of Rhayader AC in 2:04:34, first lady was Nicola
Gething of Parc Bryn Bach in 2:30:57. Aberystwyth AC results:
Dave Powell…………..2:21:57, 3rd M50, bottle of wine;
Louise Barker…………2:33:40, 4th lady, piece of Welsh Royal Crystal;
John Evans…………….2:51:23, 1st M65, Crystal;
Anita Worthing……..2:53:42, 1st F55, Crystal;
Maureen Pritchard..3:07:25;
Lina Lesutiene……….3:10:44;
Edward Land………….3:10:51 (just cruisin’ and marathon training)
Elaine Rowlands…….3:13:16 (marathon training)
Cliff Thomas…………..3:24:48 (injured & hobbling!)
Rhayader 20 mile Road Race (8 March 2014)
By Cliff Thomas
The course of the Rhayader 20 has it all : high hills, deep valleys, winding ascents,
distant views, plunging descents, wooded hills and reflections across limpid lakes. In
fact, it is exactly the sort of car route to consider with a couple of kiddies and a small
picnic, prior to a proper meal on your return to Rhayader.
On foot, however, it is a very different proposition. The organisers advise that full body
cover should be carried, and last year, although it was fine but cold in Rhayader, the
course was marshalled by snowmen after the second drinks station. This year, by
contrast, the gale force winds on the exposed uplands were juxtaposed teasingly with the
almost unpleasantly warm conditions in the valleys.
The first couple of miles are fairly flat, but there follows a 'three mile hill' : the Wye
bridge at Rhayader is at 200m, and the top of the hill is at 490m. Then, after about a
mile of flattish running (into the teeth of a gale this year), the course turns precipitously
downwards in a series of hairpins with loose gravel on the corners, passing the turning
for the old coach road to Aber, and over the Pont ar Elan bailey bridge at the bottom.
After recovering some of the lost height, the route now follows the line of the valley of
the river Elan, and, for those able to focus beyond the tarmac a few yards ahead, a series
of magnificent views are revealed on turning each successive corner. Meanwhile, the
course undulates generally downwards towards the Wye bridge, until, finally, at 1.5
miles from the Finish, the last 50m hill lurks to bite the bottoms of the unwary !
Overall, a smashing course, and greatly reccommended, runnable by any aspiring
Marathoner, BUT, in training and preparation, it should be treated like a full Marathon
and not a mere 'eesy-peesy' 20 miler.
In a field of 342, the winner of the 30th Rhayader 20 race was Jonathan Pugh of
Rhayader RC in 2:04:34, and the First Lady was Nicola Gething of Parc Bryn Bach in
58th position and 2:30:57.
AAC was led home by Dave Powell in 2:21:57, John Evans and Anita Worthing won the
usual really nice locally produced Royal Welsh Crystal prizes for being first in their age
groups, and I acted as 'AAC Sweeper' to make sure that no-one got lost..... All
Finishers received a good quality polo shirt with Anniversary motif, though the shirt was
somewhat spoilt for me by the silly comments on the back which limit the shirt's
usefulness.
Rhayader 20 Round the Lakes
By Elaine Rowlands
To sum it up briefly, excellent organisation, superb weather until the headwind around
the lakes and a
nice polo shirt too!! Overall....I loved it and can’t wait to do it again next year!! :)
Ynys Mon Half
By Shelley Childs
My first race of the year after a post Aber 10k period of pure gluttony,
almost on a Brian Ashton / Ed Land scale (but not quite) and inability to
get back into the training groove meant a belated start to the racing year.
With my lunchtime taskmaster Gancho Slavov currently out injured, there has
been little in the way of his 'operation certain death' intervals so far and
so I've been half heartedly attempting some of these myself, and have also
been glad to be back at the Tuesday night speed sessions.
I chose this race as it's on the in-laws doorstep up on the Menai Straights
and so a relaxed Saturday afternoon was spent reading the papers and putting
the world to right in the father in-laws conservatory. This made a change
from the usual 'Ace Ventura' style driving through Wales on the morning of
the event, arriving with minutes to spare...
I picked up my number which also contained a 'do not bend' timing chip which
I duly bent climbing back into the car, and a nice green & yellow T-Shirt,
saving even more pillow time for the following morning.
The race started on the Menai Bridge and so I parked in the overflow car
park which was Bangor City FC's new ground, turning out to be about a mile
away, with not a portaloo in sight. Decision time. Get to the start early,
in full warm up gear, visit loo & run back to the car, strip down and run
back in race gear? This would mean 3 miles pre race! Instead, I sacrificed
my trusty orange rain jacket and left the car for the day in my ready to
race state with rain / warm up jacket which ended up in the back of the
organisers van. I'll ask for it back one day..
Portaloos aplenty at the bridge and so we were off. The announcer went
through the list of favorites, all with their own specific marathon goals,
using this 'Island Race' as a preparation event. Rob Samuel, the winner of
Marathon Eryri was even here.
My plan was to run at 6.20 pace or as near as I could, depending on the
course, which I hadn't raced before. Mile 1 was the usual stampede as we
headed into the town on the other side of the bridge, before heading north
east towards Beaumaris on 'rolling roads'.
Miles 2-6 were all ok despite the hills although I was being caught by
individuals and small groups and couldn't really tag on any of them. This
was the start of alarm bells and as we headed north of Beaumaris onto some
twisty back roads, I began my 'second phase' of the race which involved
running slower than phase one!
We turned back towards Beaumaris after what seemed like hours of wandering
the countryside and hit a harsh headwind (no wonder the first 6 miles were
ok!) and as we headed around the marina, I was caught by the first lady and
a companion. The companion was running a very strange style, dragging his
right foot. It transpired that he was in fact trying to unhitch something
from the sole of his shoe and when he couldn't achieve this, he duly stopped
dead, despite me being right behind him. Luckily I've watched the Matrix
series of films, and instantly impersonated Keanu Reeves in dodging a bullet
and somehow managed to twist myself around the human pillar in front of me,
narrowly avoiding putting us both out of the race.
Miles 9-11 were even worse with headwinds and hills all conspiring against
me and the rest of the field as pace went out the window and it was just
time to enjoy the run. At mile 12 I glanced at the watch and still had a
faint chance of a sub 1.30, needing around 8 minutes to compete the last 1.2
miles. I half heartedly trudged on, only to see a sign saying 400 metres to
go..I looked down again, I had 1min 50 seconds to do 400 metres - easy!?
Thinking back to all the track sessions we'd done, I bolted off and sprinted
the last '400', but alas it wasn't 400, more like 600 metres and as the
finish came into view, I was in at around 1.30.16!
In summary, a well organized race, backed up by great enthusiasm from the
locals with plenty of support & feeds. If you fancy a racing weekend away in
North Wales, look no further.
Training Details:
Now that the clocks have gone back, please remember to wear high visibility
clothes/reflective bibs or snap bands to the training sessions. The majority of our
training sessions involve running on the roadside, even in built up areas it can be
difficult for cars to see runners dressed in dark clothing – we must act
responsibly! Be seen and not hit!
