President's
corner
I hope everyone has had a chance to see the changes
at the community centre! The building committee
has been working hard over the winter to line up the
projects that will occur throughout the summer. The
Federal Government through the Canada 150 grant
has provided funding for these improvements. Thanks
to David Baker, Janice Mackett, Rhonda Zander, and
Janine McAuliffe for their countless hours put into the
care of the facility.
Thanks to all who attended the community clean-up
and completed the community survey. The Board has
begun to review the Community Association’s Strategic
Plan and the comments received will be reflected within
the three-year plan. If you have ideas or are interested in
participating in the strategic plan, please contact either
myself (403-286-0175) or Janine (403-247-3116).
Speaking of the community clean-up! Thanks to Leaha
Owen for organizing this year’s clean-up. Check out her
report within this newsletter. More than 42 volunteers
helped on the day. We had three trucks along with the
Got Junk truck going through the community helping
residents who were unable to get down on their own.
We also had a truck responding to concerns regarding
garbage in back alleys. There are some back alleys that
require neighborhood intervention. If you notice a lot
of garbage in the alley, please contact 311 and they can
inspect the area and can intervene with the property
owner.
May 11, 2017, Ward Sutherland arranged a meeting with
Calgary Chief of Police, Chief Constable Roger Chaffin.
It was a great opportunity to share concerns with the
police. Topping the list within most ward 1 communities is traffic. Residents are encouraged to complete a
Traffic Service Request Form which can be accessed
online. What was clear at the meeting, was that the
police rely on community information to direct services and respond to areas of concern. Additionally, the
police recognize that many policing issues result from
underlying mental health and addiction concerns. The
police work to collaborate with community partners to
help address underlying issues and recognize that they
can’t enforce their way to mental health. With that said,
they are often the first responders for many individuals
struggling within the City. The relationships that they
form within communities is viewed as invaluable. Our
Community Liaison Officer, Damien Price, requests that
if you are contacting the police that you send him an
email and he can track and follow up with any trends in
our neighborhood. As a community, I encourage everyone to continue to contact the police with any concerns
in the neighborhood.
The bike lane along Home Road is an ongoing discussion
with the City. An open house has been planned. At this
open house, information regarding the bike lane will be
presented with a special emphasis on the concerns that
the City heard from the open house and on-line survey.
South Shaganappi Intersection proposal will also be
presented in June. There have been changes to the proposed short term solutions. As of this publication, I am
not sure of the new plan.
I really encourage residents to get involved, come to the
open houses, share your voices. The community is better
and stronger when many voices are heard. We as a board
can only advocate only for what we hear from you. Hope
to see you at the Open House: June 14 from 5-8.
Take care
Marilyn

Montgomery Community
Clean Up A Huge Success!
42 volunteers turned out for our
11th annual Community Clean Up
on Saturday May 6th. In partnership
with the City of Calgary, Bowest Appliances, Navajo Metal,1-800 JUNK,
Recycle Logic and Best Shredding
our work crews accomplished the
following:
•18,360 kilograms of waste removed
•4,500 kilograms of organic waste
removed
•80 tires recycled
•30+ bicycles re-purposed by
community members or delivered to Good Life Community
Bike Shop
•½ bin of confidential shredding
was collected
•2 full metal bins were collected
and recycled
•1 commercial sized truckload of
appliances were recycled
•6 trailer loads of electronics were
diverted from landfill
•197 vehicles were unloaded and
sorted by our volunteers
We had FIVE volunteer driver teams
circulating the neighborhood doing pick ups and cleaning alleyways.
There were 20+ homes that were arranged for pick ups.
ated by all who worked the event.
Thank you, Lila!
People coming to the Clean Up were
asked to complete surveys while they
waited in the line-up, and these have
been compiled for the Board’s upcoming strategic planning session.
Montgomery has incredible volunteers and what a privilege to work
alongside 42 dedicated and hardworking community members! A
heart felt and sincere thank you to
each of you for your enthusiasm and
gift of time. “WHO has the best volunteers?” WE DO!
MCA memberships were sold during
our event, and continue to be available at MCA throughout the year. We
collected donations at the exit gate
and these funds are sincerely appreciated.
Photos that were taken during
event have shared with the City at
#YYCCLEANS!
Volunteers were fed a light breakfast, refreshments throughout the
day and sandwiches for lunch. As a
HIGHLIGHT a long-term community
member Lila came to our event not
with items for recycle or landfill but
instead with two trays of unsolicited
homemade sandwiches. She wanted
to make sure our volunteers were
well fed! This was a random and generous act of kindness, truly appreci-
Montgomery also has a vibrant business community who also stepped
in to assist for our event. A giant

Early Montgomery Resident Returns
to the House He Built in 1952!
Since moving to Ontario in 1963,
John Fisher has returned to Calgary many times to notice that
over the years, the house he built
on Home Road in Montgomery has
remained – in his words – “…largely
unchanged.”
The retired graphic artist and
writer, at 90 years of age, is in the
process of documenting his experience in early-1950s Montgomery.
“I’m writing a lightly humourous
book about building a house on
Home Road, Montgomery in 1952.
My book is not an historically accurate book as the timelines have
been compressed to make the story
flow, and many events gently exaggerated to bring out the humour of
that time.”
Summer 1953. Upt to the roof-line. Note how far away the road allowance is. “Montgomery
1998” shows a widened paved road and a bus stop right outside the front door!
John has shared with us a few historic photographs, shown here.
The book, tentatively called “Your
Turn To Find The Hammer,” is expected to be self-published upon
completion.

TRIPLE A EVENTS AND WEEKLY PROGRAMS
Have you ever wondered how the Alliance for Active
Aging otherwise known as Triple A came about? Triple
A was the brainchild of Gord Smith around 10 years
ago when he was General Manager of the Varsity Community Association (CA). He like many, had tried to offer various programs for seniors but found enrollment
was often too small to make the program viable. This
is when he came up with the idea to collaborate with
the neighbouring associations of Montgomery, Edgemont, Dalhousie, Silver Springs and Scenic Acres to offer
complementary programs which anyone from either of
the communities could attend, without the need to purchase an additional CA Membership. Gord presented
his model to the City of Calgary and it has since been
presented to other community associations in Calgary
as a successful and unique way for CA’s to collaborate
together.
Gord sadly passed away earlier this year. Over his life
Gord made an immense contribution to many sports
and community based organizations. His memory will
live on in many ways, including through Triple A. Thanks
to his foresight to bring our 6 community associations
together to serve the active senior’s in our communities,
between us we now offer a growing number of activities and social groups to meet the needs of our older
adults. If you have an idea for an activity or club please
reach out to your nearest community association. Many
of the offerings listed below were ideas generated by
residents just like you!

News from the
Friends of
Nose Hill
by Anne Burke
The FONHS hosted a free guided walk (2 hours) on Nose
Hill to identify flowers and discuss the May Count of
Plants in Bloom. Our guide was John McFaul, a professional naturalist who has been leading nature walks and
hikes for 30 years. He received a BSc degree in Environmental Biology from the University of Calgary. John is an
accredited Professional Interpreter with the Interpretive
Guides Association, a member of the Friends of Nose
Hill, and an honourary member of the Calgary Field
Naturalists’ Society (Nature Calgary). He has the Loran L.
Goulden Award and the Frank & Alice Harper Memorial
Award from the Federation of Alberta Naturalists.
The Alberta May Count of Plants in Bloom is an annual
event sponsored by Nature Alberta to record plants in
bloom in Alberta during the last week in May, using a
standardized approach. The purpose is to provide information on the distribution of flowering plants in Alberta.
This monitors the spread of non-native species and provides insights into the response of plants to variations
in climate.
The City is responsible for the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and programming for 800 kilometers of pathways. Calgary has the largest urban bike

path system in North America. Let’s keep this in mind
while Nose Hill needs restoration and trails are closed to
protect wildlife habitat.
You can download the new Pathways & Bikeways App
from www.calgary.ca. The map is now in three formats:
Mobile Application, Online, Paper Copy. Please note
that Pathways are off-street routes and Bikeways are
on-street routes. The speed limit along pathways is 20
k.p.h., unless posted. Wear a helmet. Yield to the right of
way. Stay on the right side of the pathway, unless passing. Use a bell, whistle or horn to protect walkers and
joggers. Do not pass in sections with a double yellow
line. You cannot cycle or in-line skate on a pathway with
a leashed dog.
All pathways and trails are for non-motorized use,
except for powered wheelchairs. A regional pathway
is part of the city-wide network, paved with asphalt,
and off-street. A local pathway has routes in communities, linking to neighbourhood parks, schools, and
other community destinations. Trails are unpaved
paths and may be granular or compacted dirt. If you
know of a bylaw infraction and would like to report it,
please call 311.

Attention
Community
Residents
In order to cut down on bottle pickers rummaging
through our recycle bins and potentially trespassing
on private property, we would ask you to support our
local school….
Terrace Road Elementary School has acquired a large
container in the East parking lot taking any and all recyclable that can be cashed in for the deposit refund.
This will help keep unwanted eyes lurking in your
yards and garage.
Please support our only school in Montgomery and
keep our back yards and Alleys safe. For additional information contact Montgomery CSI:

361 New Jobs for Calgary Confederation
For the past two years in communities across Alberta
we have witnessed personal hardships, challenges and
dashed hopes caused by the economic downturn and
jobs crisis.
Calgary Confederation communities have not been immune to this impact, as has been evident in feedback
from many constituents over the past few months, but
there is help.
We know that services from non-profit organizations
and community associations often increase in the summer months and many are concerned about their ability
to offer employment opportunities again this year.
Many of these organizations provide critical employment experience and skills training for young Canadians. Statistics show us that unemployment amongst
young Canadians is the highest of any age group and
so the real job experience they obtain through summer
jobs is critical to future employability.
How fortunate we are to build upon the Youth Employment Strategy which was introduced in 2006 by the
Conservative Government. Today, thanks to the Canada
Summer Jobs program, our constituency, together
with constituencies across Alberta (and Canada) can
provide funding to assist employers to create summer
opportunities for young people aged 15 to 30 years
who are full-time students intending to return to their
studies this fall.
I am proud of the application initiatives of our not-forprofit organizations, public sector employers and small
businesses who have taken the time to make their opportunities known to Service Canada. As a result, the
Calgary Confederation communities, through 132 agencies, small business and non-profit employers, will be in
a position to offer 361 jobs for a total of 3,229 weeks of
work this summer.
What does this mean for our community?
•Investment in our small business, organizations and
non-profits.
•Opportunity for young people to learn or improve job
16
skills and gain work experience with local employers
in areas such as retail, hospitality, marketing, technology, research and communications.
•The chance for non-profits to extend their services
across the summer, allowing a variety of camps, children’s programs, specialized teaching opportunities,
and unique community service programs for all ages,
among others.
•All project participants will benefit through personal
growth, increasing employability, determining career
goals/paths, and ultimately through our investment in
them, contribute to the strength of our future workforce and community stability.
I am very pleased to support this important program
and extend my best wishes to each and all for a successful summer job experience.

Friends,
With June, we have our first month of summer. School
is on break until September and we will all get to enjoy
several months of great weather. I would like to congratulate the class of 2017 on their graduation, and
wish them all success in whatever career path they
choose.
It’s been a very busy spring legislative session. We’ve
worked to bring in programs to make life more affordable for everyday Albertans, by capping electricity prices, reducing school fees and keeping taxes on
families the lowest in Canada. Beginning in June is the
introduction of electricity price protection. We’re taking action to protect families, farms and businesses
from electricity price volatility by implementing fouryear ceiling on power prices. This price cap will ensure
that Albertans pay no more than 6.8 cents per kilowatt
hour for electricity - the same as current long-term retail
prices. The price ceiling applies to the Regulated Rate
Option (RRO) for electricity. From June 2017 to June
2021, consumers on the RRO plan (the majority of Albertans) will pay the market rate or the government’s
ceiling rate, whichever is lower.
In May I met with the Vecova Centre for Disability Services and Research located here in Calgary-Varsity. It is
non-profit charitable research and service agency that
has been meeting the needs of persons with disabilities
and the community-at-large since 1969. Affiliated with
the University of Calgary, Vecova is recognized as a
leader in the field of disability services and research.
On June 17th, the Calgary Firefighters Association will be
celebrating its 100th anniversary of serving this city as
an organized professional association. It will also launch
their newest charity endeavour the Calgary Firefighters
Charitable Foundation. This charity will serve Calgarians
affected by fires or other disasters by providing immediate assistance and relief. I also had the opportunity to
attend the Calgary Firefighters Fire-Ops Day, where we
donned protective gear and tackled a simulated fire
situation, getting an experience of the important work
our firefighters do every day.

The Banff Trail Community Association will be having
its annual general meeting on June 9, 7-9pm at the
Banff Trail community centre. June 17th is Neighbour
Day which celebrates community spirit in Calgary. University Heights will be hosting a BBQ that evening. On
June 30th, Triwood & Brentwood will be hosting a Canada BBQ for the country’s 150th birthday. The BBQ starts
at 5pm, will have live music, and fireworks at 10:30pm.
The event is at the Triwood Arena, and is no charge, but
RSVPs are requested.
Our office serves all the people of Varsity, Dalhousie,
Brentwood,
Banff
Trail,
University
Heights,
Montgomery, and Charleswood. Our team is available
to talk to constituents about provincial government
departments, programs, scrolls, and services. To find out
more drop in, call, email, or check out stephaniemcLean.
