SENECA — The Newark Norsemen opened their season Monday night with a 65-56 win over the Mendota Trojans in the opening round of pool play of the Seneca Turkey Tournament. Newark (1-0) led 26-17 after one quarter and 33-30 at the half and outscored Mendota 32-26 after the break. Cam Myre scored 20 points to lead Newark. Dylan Patrick added 17 points. Beau Brown and Will Clausel contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively. Illiana Christian 65, Somonauk 52 At the Seneca Turkey Tournament, the Bobcats fell to the Vikings in their season opener. Illiana Christian built an 11-point halftime advantage (34-23) and outscored Somonauk 31-29 after the break. Nate Wegener had 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Somonauk (0-1). Addison Bode had 16 points and five assists. Ridgeview 68, Flanagan-Cornell 46 At the Route 17 Classic in rural Streator, the Falcons fell to the Mustangs in their season opener at Woodland High School. Ridgeview led 29-22 at the half and outscored Flanagan-Cornell 39-24 after the break to pull away to the 22-point margin of victory. Jeremy Durdan had 19 points for Flanagan-Cornell (0-1). Karson Kimpling had 12 points. Serena 66, Coal City 64 At the Coal City Invitational. the Huskers knocked off their tournament hosts, racing out to a 21-9 lead after one quarter and holding on, shooting a blazing 65 percent from the field. Brad Byrnes poured in 23 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to lead Serena (1-0). Jakob Setchell (15 points) and Dawson Fuller (11 points, seven assists) also starred for the Huskers. Sandwich 57, Genoa-Kingston 54 At the Sycamore Strombom Tournament, the Indians won their season opener in a three-point thriller. Girls basketball Marquette 53, Henry-Senachwine 16 At Henry, the Lady Crusaders posted their first win of the season in their Tri-County Conference opener against the Lady Mallards. Marquette led 10-7 after the initial eight minutes of play before outscoring Henry-Senachwine 43-9 over the final three quarters, including 35-7 during the middle two. Anna Sypniewski and Hannah Cowie scored 11 points each to pace a balanced Marquette scoring attack. Makena McConnaughhay and Emily Owens added eight points apiece, while Cate Thompson and Maggie Hettel contributed seven and six, respectively. Morris 63, FCW 60 At Fairbury, the Lady Falcons lost a tight contest to Morris in their final game of the Prairie Central Turkey Tournament. Korbin Collins, an all-tournament selection, had 23 points for Flanagan-Cornell/Woodland (2-3). Sam Lyons and all-tourney pick Rachael Quaritsch had 15 and 14 points, respectively.
