Q-1
Explain with reference to the context:
[10]
(A)
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
[05]
Ans.
The lines have been taken from the poem “Where the Mind Is Without Fear” composed by
Rabindranath Tagore. The poem embodies Tagore’s vision for the future India in the form
of a prayer.
In these lines, Tagore prays to the almighty for a world where there is no division made
by the narrow “walls” of caste, creed, gender or class. Everyone feels for the other as they all
are united. They are committed to truth and give their best to achieve perfection. Neither
falsehood nor lethargy troubles them. Thus Tagore promotes free-thinking and idealism to
build the character of the nation.
(B)
And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin [05]
anew, I wish that for you.
Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.
Ans.
The lines have been taken from the commencement speech given by Steve Jobs at the
University of Stanford in 2005. The lines conclude the speech with an inspirational
message.
After telling three stories about his life, Jobs refers to the final issue of The Whole Earth
Catalog in which he found the message: “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish”. When Jobs asks us
to be hungry, he wants us to be ready for new ideas and ventures. We should constantly
strive for what we want to do and be passionate about that. By the phrase “Stay Foolish”,
Jobs asks us to be humble and open for new knowledge. We should never think that we
know everything. Then only we shall grow, innovate and succeed.

Why did Mrs Sappleton call Mr Framton Nuttel “A most extraordinary
man”?
As Saki writes in the short story “The Open Window,” Mr Nuttel was a weak-hearted
person. He could be frightened easily. Vera, the niece of Mrs Sappleton, was a mischievous
girl. She told Mr Nuttel a false story about Mrs Sappleton’s husband and her two young
brothers when Mrs Sappleton was not present. As Vera told Mr Nuttel, Mrs Sappleton’s
husband and borthers had gone for hunting and had not returned; but Mrs Sappleton had
been waiting for them for three years. That was why she kept a window open all the time. In
reality, when three of the men returned home like any other day, Mr Nuttel got frightened
and ran away from Mrs Sappleton’s house at once. He could not wait to finish the
conversation. Having no clue about the actual reason of Mr Nuttel’s behaviour, she found
him to be extraordinary.
