Rotary District Governor Gives Updates and Goals in Upbeat Message
New Rotary District 6250 Governor Dean Ryerson of Madison West Towne/Middleton Rotary had Madison
Downtown Rotary at the top of his 61 club visit list when he appeared Wednesday and gave kind words re:
time and activities which Downtown Rotary members were engaged in, starting with our 100th anniversary
celebration.
He talked about Rotary International’s theme of "Engage Rotary, Change Lives" and how it fits Downtown's
mentoring program and scholarship awards, plus an "End Polio Now" priority. This is thanks to a $2 pledge for
every $1 from clubs, a match from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with a need estimated at $5 billion.
In addition, membership growth is targeted to +2%--a definite challenge to a trend of service club decline
nationally--and effective use of social media and leadership development.
Eradication of polio is also an example of a "tougher than it looks" Rotary goal, especially internationally.
Volunteer public health workers have been killed in Pakistan and threatened in other areas, as many strive to
provide "every child" with polio vaccine.
A short Rotary video was shown as Ryerson exhorted everyone to "do good in the world." Members gave
him a standing ovation and with nods and smiles left the meeting inspired to do so!
Our thanks to Rotary District Governor Dean Ryerson for his inspiring message and to Lori Kay for this review
article.
