The goal of the Learn to Skate Program is to help students
develop the skills needed to fully enjoy the sport of ice skating.

LEARN TO SKATE POLICIES
• Registration discounts apply to online registration prior to the
start of the session only at ColumbiaAssociation.org/login.
• Refunds are permitted for the following situations —
1. Notification of withdrawal from class prior to the start of a
session (subject to a $20 administrative fee).
2. Student medical emergency with copy of physician’s
verification provided to waive the administrative fee.
• Missed classes will not be credited.
• One courtesy make-up class is allowed on Saturday morning
only, provided space is available at the appropriate level.
All requests must be submitted via email to Ice.Rink@
ColumbiaAssociation.org with 24-hour advance notice.
• Make-up classes or change of class time can not be scheduled
the first or last Saturday of the session.
• Practice passes: Seven complimentary admissions to public
skate session per session, skate rental not included. Passes
expire one week after session ends. Practice passes are not
transferable.
• No practice is allowed during group lesson time.
• Children 5 and younger must wear helmets during lesson.

CLOTHING
• Wear warm, stretchy/roomy clothing.
• Pant cuffs longer than the heel of the skate can make your
child trip and fall on the ice.
• Wear a hat or ear warmers, and gloves or mittens. Note:
Most of your body heat is lost through the top of your head.
• Boys should wear thin socks; girls should wear tights;
adults should wear stockings.
SKATE RENTAL
• Pick skates that are half a size smaller than your child’s
regular shoe size. Try the skates on. If you have any trouble
fitting your child with skates, please let us know.
• When you find the correct size skates and get them on,
double check the laces to be sure they are tight and not
dangling below the heel of the skate.
LESSON DAY
• First day of class, please arrive a half-hour prior to class start.
• Arrive early so your child will be ready when class starts.
• You can check out rental skates early — take advantage!
For children 3-5 years old
Fundamentals taught in an age-appropriate manner. ALL students
MUST wear a helmet while on the ice! (Bicycle helmets work well.)
Basic 1-6 Levels
Ages 6 through adult or passed Tot 3. Students are taught the
fundamentals of skating for the development of a recreational
and/or competitive sport.
Pre-Free Skate and Free Skate Levels 1-6
Students will further develop their edging, spinning and jumping
techniques. Prerequisite: advancement through Learn to Skate
program or placement testing.
Private Instruction Available during freestyle sessions and on
Saturdays after group lesson; please check with your instructor.
IMPORTANT REMINDER
• In case of emergency and to allow skaters full access to
and from the ice, all non-skaters must stay away from the
entrance and exit doors to the ice.
• All skating parents, please watch your children from bleachers.

25-minute lesson per week
for seven weeks, the use of
rental skates, and seven public
session practice passes. For

The Columbia Ice Rink’s U.S. Figure Skating
Learn to Skate Program, taught by The
Chesapeake Skating School, has been formed
to provide a fun, safe atmosphere for all
students (age 3 and older) to learn how to ice
skate. The Tot and Basic 1-6 levels are
geared towards the fundamentals of skating
and develops the skills that are necessary for
recreational, figure, ice hockey and speed
skating. Pre-Free Skate and Free Skate
levels develop the skills necessary for
advancement into figure skating.
