CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP The Circle of Life from The Lion King by John and Rice Eryn Davis, Craig First, Drey Mitchell, Soloists *HYMN OF PRAISE NO. 144 This Is My Father’s World TERRA BEATA All Stanzas This is my Father's world, and to my listening ears all nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres. This is my Father's world: I rest me in the thought of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; his hand the wonders wrought. This is my Father's world, the birds their carols raise, the morning light, the lily white, declare their maker's praise. This is my Father's world: he shines in all that's fair; in the rustling grass I hear him pass; he speaks to me everywhere. This is my Father's world. O let me ne'er forget that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet. This is my Father's world: why should my heart be sad? The Lord is King; let the heavens ring! God reigns; let the earth be glad! Tom Fettke When I gaze into the night skies and see the work of Your fingers; The moon and stars suspended in space. Oh, what is man, that You are mindful of Him? You have given man a crown of glory and honor, and have made him a little lower than the angels. You have put him in charge of all creation: The beasts of the field, the birds of the air, the fish of the sea. But what is man, that You are mindful of him. O Lord, our God, the majesty and glory of your name transcends the earth and fills the heavens. O Lord, our God, little children praise You perfectly, and so would we, and so would we. Alleluia! The lively young Simba is taught well by his father. King Mufasa takes Simba to the top of Pride Rock and teaches him that everything exists in a delicate balance known as the ―Circle of Life.‖ Along with life lessons, he sternly warns Simba not to stray beyond the boundaries of the Pride Lands. Not all in the kingdom are pleased with the news of Simba’s arrival. Full of jealously and rage, Mufasa’s younger brother, Scar, laments his lost chance at becoming the king of the Pride Lands. He begins to scheme a vicious plot to thwart Simba’s destiny. Innocently, Simba scampers off to visit his Uncle Scar. Simba is fascinated by his Uncle Scar’s stories about the Elephant Graveyard, a place Simba’s father has warned him about and forbidden he visit. Nevertheless, Simba and his best friend, a female cub named Nala, steal off to explore the forbidden graveyard. Suddenly, they find themselves surrounded by hungry hyenas. King Mufasa arrives on the scene to rescue them from the hungry hyenas that he frightens away. Simba asks if he and his father will always be together. He is told about the Great Kings of the Past and how they guide and watch over everything. He assures Simba that he will always be there for him. Back in the graveyard, Scar engages the hyenas in a plot to use Simba as bait to trick Mufasa into a death trap. As Mufasa arrives to rescue his trapped son, Mufasa is killed. Accordingly, Scar convinces Simba that his father’s death was his own fault and that he should flee the Pride Lands and never return. Overcome with guilt and grief, Simba runs away. Back at Pride Rock, Scar pronounces himself King of Pride Rock and claims the throne for himself. Banishing himself to the desert, Simba collapses from the heat, and barely escapes death. Fortunately, he is rescued and befriended by Timon, a meerka and Pumbaa, a warthog. They take him back to their jungle home where they nurse him back to health and explain that they, too, are outcasts. They welcome him into their humble and carefree way of life. Simba flourishes and grows into an adult lion. Years later, Simba rescues Timon and Pumbaa from a hungry lioness, who turns out to be Nala. Remembering their friendship, Simba and Nala reconcile and fall in love. Nala encourages Simba, who still feels responsible for his father’s death, to return home — that the Pride Lands have become a wasteland. Still haunted with guilt over his father’s death, Simba is told that Mufasa is still "alive.‖ Simba is visited by the spirit of Mufasa, who counsels him saying he must return to the Pride Lands and resume his rightful place as King. Realizing he can no longer avoid his past, Simba and his faithful friends return to Pride Lands. Upon return to Pride Lands, Simba challenges Scar who admits that it was he who killed Mufasa. Enraged, Simba forces Scar to reveal the truth to the other lions. Begging Simba for mercy, Scar justifies his life, but Simba says he does not believe him anymore; yet he spares Scar’s life and tells him to run away and never return. Still, the ever-conniving Scar meekly walks past Simba and suddenly attacks him. Following a fierce battle, Scar loses his balance and falls over the cliff. With Scar and the hyenas gone, Simba is happily acknowledged as the proper and rightful king. Thus, the rebuilding of the kingdom begins. As Simba and Nala's newborn cub is introduced to the animal kingdom of the Pride Lands, the circle of life continues.
