FOUNDATIONS Sydney, five-twentieths of her residual estate for the teaching and development of Agricultural Science. The residual value of five-twentieths of the estate, which is yet to be finalised, has been assessed at approximately $146 000. Alexander Hugh Thurburn Fund The late Miss Mary Esme Thurburn, who died on 2 November 1970, bequeathed her residual estate to the University of Sydney, to establish the 'Alexander Hugh Thurburn Fund' in the Faculty of Agriculture, to be used 'for such purposes as the governing body of the University thinks best'. The capital value of the Fund as at 1 January 1975 was S206 929. The Tur land Endowment In 1940 The University of Sydney was advised that under his will the late Mr W. C. Turland, who died on 9 June 1939, bequeathed his residuary estate to the University, subject to a life interest. The residuary estate passed to the University on 29 March 1964. The bequest is to be known as 'the Turland Endowment' and the income is to be used to promote, assist and extend 'education, teaching and research in the said University in respect of soil chemistry, soil physics, soil bacteriology, plant disease, plant breeding, insect pests, dairy chemistry and bacteriology, and'such other "scientific research in the said University, as the said Senate in its absolute discretion shall decide is most calculated to solve all or any of the difficulties of the farmers, graziers, or other primary producers of the State of New South Wales'. The University has received distributions of cash, shares and securities to the value of approximately $11 700. The A. S. Vallack Bequest Established in 1960 by a bequest from the late Arthur Styles Vallack, Esq., MB ChM, of the income from one-half of his residuary estate. The income of the fund is to be devoted to research into vegetable, animal or, particularly, human heredity by the establishment of lectureships, scholarships and other appointments, by the purchase of apparatus, or by such other means as may be necessary. It has been decided that the income will be allowed to accumulate over a period of five years and that each department concerned will then be asked to submit a request for the use ofthe accumulated fund for either (i) a research studentship or fellowship or the like, or (ii) the purchase of apparatus. The George Walker Fund The late Dr George Walker who died in 1948 bequeathed to the Medical School ofthe University of Sydney the residue of his estate after the payment of certain legacies. The bequest amounted to approximately £1146 and it is to be used by the Faculty of Medicine for whatever purposes it shall determine. 346 The Frederic James Wallis Bequest MrF. J. Wallis, ofSydney, died on 21 December 1960. Under his will he bequeathed to the Senate of the University ofSydney the sum of £20 000 free of duties, to be allocated for the following purposes: (a) as to the sum of £10 000 for any purposes ofthe Post-graduate Medical Foundation; (b) as to the remaining £10 000 for such of the general purposes ofthe said University ofSydney as its Senate may decide. The sum of £20 000 was received in 1961. The Frederick William Ward Bequest Under the terms of his will, Frederick William Ward, who died on 1 July 1934, bequeathed one-third ofthe residue of his estate, after the death of all his children and those legally entitled to a share in the income from the Estate, to the University of Sydney to be applied 'in such manner as the governing body of the said University ofSydney may from time to time think fit in the furtherance of research in some branch of science'. The University's share in the residuary estate was $6000. The Oswald Wart Fund The late Colonel Oswald Watt, who died in May 1921, left an estate valued for probate purposes at over £175 000, and appointed the Perpetual Trustee Company as executors and trustees. After leaving many bequests and numerous legacies to friends and institutions, the testator bequeathed the residue of his property, which valued £107 948, upon trust to the Senate of the University of Sydney, 'for such uses for the benefit ofthe institution as the Senate in its absolute discretion should determine'. The John Paul White Bequest Under the terms of his will the late John Paul White, who died on 23 February 1973, bequeathed his residuary estate to the Post-graduate Medical Foundation 'for the promotion of research into cancer as the Senate of the University may determine'. The value of the residuary estate was $19 326. The Genevieve Pearl Wood Bequest Under her will the late Mrs G. P. Wood bequeathed one-half of her residuary estate to the University of Sydney to be used towards cancer research. The University's share of the residuary estate amounted to $12 020 on 21 June 1968.
