Asoc Candidates Co-President (x 2): 1. Name: Devon Sethi Position: Co Pres Manifesto: Manifesto Hi my name’s Deven and I’m running to be your next Asian Society Co-president. Asoc has already thrived so much this year with membership increasing by 44% and I want to ensure that next year is an even better, if not the best, year for our society. I believe I am well suited for the role of co-pres as having been a Fresher’s Rep I’ve had the privilege of being an intricate part of the society, selling tickets, organising coaches and getting to know how the society really works. Moreover, having played Rugby and Cricket all throughout my time at school, as well as completing both junior and senior Sports leadership awards, has left me in good stead to take a position of high responsibility. Being part of this year's Asoc team has made me want to contribute even more to it and I believe I have much to offer as your Co-president! My vision for next year is to increase not only membership but also active membership, especially amongst older years. I believe this can be achieved through; • • • • • • Introducing sports socials – such as for the most recent India-Pakistan game. Everyone loves a bit of good old competition! This will be a brilliant way to further cement and continue our (friendly) rivalry with Indian Soc, as well as generating extra revenue to fund other events. Moreover, I propose to; o Organise trips to see some of the games live, such as for Sri Lanka and India's tour of England Introduce an ASOC sports day, e.g. 5 aside tournament and introduce competitions with other societies. An anonymous blog to allow members to voice their opinions about anything they want, such as suggestions and improvements for future events. Introduce an ASOC tour - although some people might feature this in their manifesto, where exactly will the money to fund this tour come from? o My idea is to set a realistic goal of money to raise over the course of the year. This will be achieved through fundraising events (such as possibly selling home cooked Asian food to Warwick students etc), and then use this to partly finance an overseas volunteering trip. Have an ACTIVE Academic buddy system o To implement this I propose a list consisting of senior students' names, degrees and e-mails, who are willing to participate, which every Asoc member can have access to. This will allow first and possibly second years to have an extra line of support for their respective courses. Organise more talks on careers applications e.g. spring weeks. This could be achieved through possibly formulating a stronger link with ACS, who prioritise this to a larger degree. I truly believe that these ideas, if implemented under the supervision of the right co-presidents (Mahnoor and I :P), will enable Asoc to reach its full potential! So vote Deven For Co President! Name :Rajveer Kambo Position: Co-President Manifesto: VOTE RAJ FOR WARWICK ASIAN SOCIETY CO-PRESIDENT Experienced. Earnest. Excellence. EXPERIENCE CO-FOUNDER & PRESIDENT, WARWICK BHANGRA SOCIETY • • • I have experience in taking a concept idea through to completion, making a niche cultural dance form an active working society. Across 2 years membership has tripled, through strong intersociety relationships, providing an opportunity for everyone to get involved in weekly classes and exhibition performances. Achieved a partnership with Warwick Sport, generating a profit for the society, allowing classes to remain free to all of those who attend. ASOC BALL CO-ORDINATOR, 2012/2013 • • I have been in a position of responsibility within ASOC before, allowing me an unparalleled insight into the functioning of the society and the requirements to put on the largest cultural ball on campus. Increased ball capacity by 50%, gaining exclusive ball sponsorship allowing for extra entertainment such as photobooth and fireworks display. MY AIMS 1. EDUCATION & CAREERS: • SEO. I have already pre-established a relationship with members at SEO London (Sponsors for Educational Opportunity), a charity that specializes in providing ethnic students with opportunities across the worlds largest firms. I aim to hold a specific fresher only event where SEO highlight the fast track opportunities available for first years in Week 4 of Term 1, followed by specific events for second and third years, tailored to gaining internships and graduate positions. • ALUMNI/CURRENT STUDENT INDUSTRY CONTACTS. I aim to set up a network in which current university students have the ability to contact alumni/current students in any field, which they are interested. This enables them to have a point of contact in industry to gain an insight and have their questions answered. 2. VIVIDHATA 2015, WARWICK ASIAN SOCIETIES INAUGURAL TALENT SHOW: • • • Use of the Butterworth Hall to showcase the talents of students of the university. Having had performance experience, I know there is scope for this and what is required to make this event a success. The proceeds from the event will be split, to enable charities and talks co-ordinator to run a substantial program engaging a variety of members. Facilitate the opening of an extra exec position for the running of the event allowing more opportunity for inclusion in the society. 3. SPLIT SOCIETY SPONSORSHIP: • Having experience with Warwick Bhangra Society and as ASOC Ball Co-Ordinator I have gained a comprehensive list of potential corporate and event sponsors, like KUDOS Music, who have expressed an interest in sponsoring the society talent show. • This allows for the society to be an attractive prospect for companies who are looking to increase their cultural diversity. 4. SPECIFIC CULTURAL INCLUSION EVENTS: • Over the year there are several cultural events, including sporting events such as cricket matches and Diwali in which both drinkers and non-drinkers can come together to celebrate the rich Asian culture. Warwick Asian Society has been renowned for great inter university events and incredible nights out, these will remain the same under my co-leadership, allowing for its growth into a more conclusive and diverse society offering a wider range of possibilities. Vote for Raj as your Co-President. 2. Name :Akshay Kapoor Position: Co-President Manifesto: Akshay Kapoor – Co-President (Manifesto) Warwick Asian Society is the University’s largest cultural society and I wish to be a Co-President in the forthcoming year. There are many reasons why I chose this society to apply for an Exec position. It was where I really felt part of a community when first coming to Warwick and my closest friends are those that I met during the first socials of this society. This year’s large-scale events such as the One World Week Fashion Show ASOC performance and the ASOC Ball showcase the ability of the society to create occasions of high standards and I want to be involved in shaping those events, and more, next year. Why ME? • • • • • I’m an organised individual who will be able to balance my role as ASOC President with my studies and will be fully dedicated to the role. I feel that with a society as large as this, what you get out of it is what you put in; I believe a committed President, as I will be, and dedicated team will build a strong foundation for other members to build upon, particularly Freshers, who will be new to our community. Although not a 1st year Rep, I attended almost all ASOC events this year, often promoting events myself as a result of the enjoyment I got out of them. Have experience in leadership roles previously – Head of Charity and Cricket Captain in Sixth Form. These roles equip me to manage a team well and execute my abilities as a leader as best as possible. Have become friends with Asian Society members across all years, and so I am quite approachable and this will make communications throughout the society easier next year. New Ideas • • Sports – Currently, ASOC doesn’t have its own sports teams, and this is something I would like to introduce, creating Cricket teams, Football teams and others. Events – a major part of ASOC o A fund-raising event in collaboration with the Hindu Society (particularly the Sewa Coordinator) similar to Loughborough University’s ‘Dil Se’ – all proceeds going towards charity. o Nights out together with Asian Societies of other Universities such as Nottingham, Birmingham, Aston and Loughborough – an opportunity to meet new people as well as catch up with friends who attend these universities. o A Casino night – an event I’m sure many members would love! o More affordable events on campus - food and movie socials, and perhaps viewings of sports – e.g. cricket & football matches. o ASOC Sleepover – this will hopefully run in the first weeks of first team next year, following movies and food and drink. This will particularly allow new members of the society to become more integrated early on in their university lives. o Bowling/paintballing – more relaxed events, perhaps early next year or after exams. Key points • • • • • • • Collaborations with other societies Continuing excellence Helping the exec. Committee the year after Greater unity of all years Greater charity focus Sponsorship and increasing funds Opportunities for Freshers to be on exec/attend meetings 3. Name :Manhoor Position: Co-President Manifesto: Mahnoor for Co-President Hello everyone, I’m Mahnoor and I’m running to be your future Asian Society Co- President! It’s been a brilliant year for Asoc and together with Deven I want to build on this to make next year even better! Why Me? • I’m passionate about leading the Asian community in Warwick • Currently a Freshers’ Rep for ASoc. I’ve seen it grow by 44% in membership but no Asian is happy with 44%, naturally 99% is the aim!! • Previously the Co-Head of Asian Society in sixth form, organising socials and writing/directing a production • Exec member for the One World Week launch party team • If you know me you know I’m very approachable and friendly- no fronting-making it easier for your voices to be heard as members! I really just want unlimited access to free samosas. • As you can see I’ve dabbled in a bit of everything so this previous experience means that as president I can lead our team effectively and in turn you can reap the benefits by having the best Asian Society yet! My aims: • • • • • • • • Increase publicity from the beginning of the academic year to make ASoc more prominent, get the word spread and therefore increase membership - amongst non Asians also! Veer ASOC further in a philanthropic direction through events such as possibly holding our own Asian show (think Rangeela/BLAS in London) to spread cultural influence at Warwick and fundraise for a chosen charity at the same time! Greater organisation at socials – especially non drinking ones - to ensure everyone’s night runs smoothly. ASoc tour if there’s enough interest! Collaboration outside of Warwick with Asian Societies from other universities with prominent Asian communities (Birmingham, Nottingham) and have banging socials to make ASOC bigger than just Warwick. Introduce an ACTIVE Buddy system which will allow members to help other members and encourage greater integration amongst different year groups providing a better all rounded ASoc experience. Integrate with other societies - after the success of the ASoc Vs Indian Soc bar crawl, it’s fair to say that a little competition makes for a lot of fun! But why just Asian societies? As a Languages student I could make it possible to collaborate with languages societies. In the words of the great Miley Cyrus- “It’s your society you can do what you want to” – More membership input on what events we should run. I’m not promising anything unrealistic like free Ciroc for all, it’s all possible and it can all happen if you vote me for President! I hope this manifesto represents my commitment to doing the best I can to make this society even better. This is the part where you start drumming your chests and chanting in approval, Wolf of Wall Street style- or you could just come down to elections on 12th March and vote for me! #voteforMahnoor
