QUANTUM45 EPOyY SURFACING PRIMER PRODUCT DATA SHEET

QUANTUM45 EPOXY SURFACING PRIMER
PRODUCT DATA SHEET
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
QUANTUM45 is a 2K epoxy-polyamide system intended for use as a surfacing primer
for marine applications. This system provides superior filling qualities and exhibits
excellent adhesion and corrosion protection to aluminum, steel, fiberglass, and
previously painted surfaces. QUANTUM45 is the preferred primer for EMC’s
QUANTUM99 Series Topcoats.

SURFACE PREPARATION
•
•
•
•
Fiberglass – Abrade with 100-150 grit sandpaper. Sealing with QUANTUM45 Clear
Epoxy Sealer is recommended.
Wood – Abrade with 100-150 grit sandpaper. Sealing with QUANTUM45 Clear
Epoxy Sealer is recommended.
Steel – Sand blast/grind to minimum SSPC-6 Commercial Blast.
Aluminum – Sand blast/abrade with 100-150 grit sandpaper to water-break free
surface. Prep surface with QUANTAPREP CP-33 Aluminum Surface Conditioner
Note: For maximum corrosion protection for steel and aluminum substrates, apply
QUATUM 30-IP Series Inhibitive Epoxy Primer to bare steel or aluminum prior to
application of QUANTUM45. See QUANTUM 30-IP Series Data Sheet for more
information.
•
•
Previously Painted Surfaces – If no corrosion byproducts are present, abrade w/
100-150 grit sandpaper to remove gloss. Sealing with QUANTUM45 Clear Epoxy
Sealer is recommended.
Solvent clean with SR-002 Surface and Equipment Cleaner prior to application
such that surfaces are free from dust, oils, corrosion or any other contaminants
using lint free cloth and the wipe-on/wipe-off method.

See EMC’s Product Selection Guide for recommended systems.
MIXING
Shake or stir 45-SP base such that there is no material left on bottom or sides of can.
Thoroughly mix 1 part 45-SP base with 1 part 45-A-100 activator by volume. Allow an
induction period of approximately 30 minutes prior to reduction and application.
Reduction is not normally recommended. However, a 10-20% reduction by volume of
the admixed primer with SR-45 Epoxy Reducer may be used for desired appearance
and film thickness control.
EXAMPLE: 6 oz. 45-SP Base, 6 oz. 45-A-100 Activator, 0-2 oz. SR-45 Epoxy Reducer as
desired
APPLICATION
In subsequent coats, apply up to 12 total wet mils, waiting 1-3 hours between coats.
One coat application (3-4 wet mils) may be sanded in 4 hours. Multiple coat
application should cure 16 hours @ 72F before sanding. Application of a guide coat is
recommended before sanding to ensure a uniform, smooth surface. Abrade the
cured system with 220 or finer grit sandpaper to ensure optimum adhesion and
topcoat appearance.
WARNING – Do not apply paint materials to surfaces less than 5F above dew point, or
to surfaces warmer than 125F. Substrate temperature should be minimum 45F to
maximum 125F.
PRECAUTIONS
Use with adequate ventilation and proper respiratory protection. See MSDS for
complete details of composition and precautions.
