Do you hear well? Self-check questions for adults CADS | OTS | MWSAudiology | CEDS PATIENT INFORMATION Hearing loss is very common and can happen gradually, making it hard to recognise at first. It is far better to treat hearing loss early instead of trying to ignore the problem. Simply answer yes or no to the following questions to help identify if hearing loss is an issue for you; 1. Can you hear words but can’t always distinguish them? FF Yes FF No 2. Does another person’s speech often sound slurred or mumbled? FF Yes FF No 3. Do you have trouble understanding when someone with a high pitch voice talks? (Such as children) FF Yes FF No 4. Do you have trouble understanding people with soft speech or when someone whispers? FF Yes FF No 5. Do you find conversations difficult to follow, especially when there is background noise like at the dinner table or parties? FF Yes FF No 6. Do you have trouble catching everything that’s said on the telephone? FF Yes FF No 7. Do others complain that you have the TV, radio or stereo too loud? FF Yes FF No 8. Are certain sounds overly annoying or loud? FF Yes FF No 9. Do you find yourself asking people to speak up or repeat a sentence often? FF Yes FF No 10. Does it feel like your ears are plugged or blocked? FF Yes FF No 11. Do you favour one ear over the other? FF Yes FF No 12. Are you finding social situations uncomfortable when you used to enjoy FF Yes them? FF No 13. Are you feeling withdrawn, depressed or irritable? FF Yes FF No 14. Have your friends or family noticed your difficulty hearing? FF Yes FF No 15. Do you have a family history of hearing loss? FF Yes FF No If you answer yes to one or more of these questions you should have your hearing checked, you may be experiencing hearing loss. Remember, hearing loss is more noticeable than a hearing aid.
