Complete the questionnaire and your health care professional will be able to help you make the right choice. ADRENALS: WHY ARE THEY SO IMPORTANT? The adrenals glands weight is approximately 4 – 5 grams and are located on the topside of each kidney. They are composed of two parts: Adrenal Cortex- Mainly devoted to the synthesis of steroid hormones from cholesterol and composed of three parts. The Zona Glomerulosa mainly produces cortisol (stress, inflammation, etc.). The Zona Reticularis mainly produces androgens such as DHEA. Adrenal Medulla- The medulla is the central core of the adrenal gland and is surrounded by system’s main source of the catecholamine hormones, which are epinephrine and norepinephrine. These hormones, derived from tyrosine, are part of the fight or flight response initiated by the sympathetic nervous system. The adrenal glands are also responsible for helping us with blood sugar (glucose) regulation. Do you have adrenal dysfunction? Below are some of the symptoms associated with adrenal dysfunction (hypo or hyper): Blood sugar issues, carbohydrate intolerance (you fall asleep after you eat sugars or breads), muscle cramping, sleeping disorders, high and low blood pressure, immune dysfunction, thyroid dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, allergies, and structural problems to name a few. See the Adrenal Self Test located on last page. ADRENAL HYPOFUNCTION OR ADRENAL HYPERFUNCTION? In general, adrenal hypofunction is associated with decreased blood pressure and adrenal hyperfunction is associated with increased blood pressure as well as metabolic syndrome (person is normally overweight and has increased LDL cholesterol with decreased HDL cholesterol AND IN MOST CASES INCREASED TRIGLYCERIDES). Beyond these general indications it depends on where you are at with your adrenal dysfunction and how long the problem has been present. Hyperfunction (stress, metabolic syndrome, inflammation) is generally where most people begin. The adrenal function can remain hyper for an extended period of time. A diet high in refined food and a lack of exercise will contribute to metabolic syndrome and allow the adrenal function can remain hyper for an extended period of time. A diet high in refined food and a lack of exercise will contribute to metabolic syndrome and allow the adrenals to remain hyper until they simply “crash and burn” and then become hypo. When this occurs, the blood pressure may not go down, but the level of fatigue will increase and the inability to tolerate refined food will increase. In another section of this brochure there is a simple questionnaire that will help you determine if you have adrenal dysfunction and the state of adrenal dysfunction. Your health care provider has been through rigorous training in the identification and classification of adrenal dysfunction (hypo or hyper) and if adrenal dysfunction is present, will be able to guide you on the road to recover.
