VBS SESSION Monday, June 22 -‐ June 26 (Afternoon enrichment classes & extended care only) The 5-‐day VBS Session offers enrichment classes for grades 1-‐8. Extended childcare is available to enrolled students for an additional fee. The cost for the session is $125 and includes two afternoon classes. SESSION 1 Monday June 29 – Thursday July 9 (no classes on Fridays) SESSION 2 Monday July 13 – Thursday July 23 (no classes on Fridays) Each 2-‐week session offers both morning and afternoon classes. Each session’s registration fee will be applied towards that session’s tuition. Students will be placed in classes on a first come – first served basis. Summer School Curriculum Saint Joseph School Fremont, CA 94539 Grade 1-‐Core Curriculum Session 1: Mrs. Pat Cordeiro Session 2: Mrs. Sharon Menicou The students will work to enhance skills learned during the previous school year and be further prepared for the following year. Students will work in a variety of ways to practice skills while also enjoying learning. They will work independently, in small groups, partners, as well as whole class. In Language Arts the students will work on reading, writing, and speaking and listening skills. Each week will cover a different theme. Throughout the week, students will listen and respond critically to read-‐ aloud books, read decodable books, write in journals, explore the letter/sound relationships in words, and present/share writing they have done. In Math students will use daily calendar time to cover various math skills. Students will also look at number relationships, practice mathematical reasoning skills, and work to become fluent in addition and subtraction facts to 5. Grades 2-‐3 Core Curriculum Mrs. Laurie Lopez (Session 1 & 2) The children will work to sharpen skills that they learned during the last school year, be even better prepared for next school year and have fun while they learn! In Language Arts the children will work on skills such as reading, writing, and grammar. They will be working on these skills in a variety of ways. The children will be listening to and responding to stories in class, reading aloud in their grade levels, doing written work to demonstrate comprehension, and play learning games. Each child will have a journal that they will write and draw in each week. Each child will also work to produce a different piece of writing each week. There will be a different theme each week for reading and writing. We will also be working on math skills. There will be a whole class calendar time that will cover all basic math skills, and then the children will move on to working on skills that will help to prepare them for the next grade in school. Depending on the grade the child will be entering in the fall he or she will work on addition and subtraction skills and basic facts, two digit addition and subtraction skills or multiplication skills. They will be working on these skills through math games, individual instruction with me, and written work. We will also be working on math problem solving skills each week. Readiness for 4th grade and competency in the 4 operations are the goal. 5th Grade Math-‐ This course will review the skills taught in 4th grade in the 4 operations, with particular attention to fractions, 2-‐digit multiplication, and long division. Also, it will provide an introduction to the 5th grade curriculum depending on readiness. 4th/5th Language Arts-‐ This class will focus on developing and strengthening reading and writing skills. We will be reading a story each week, and doing various skill development activities. Each story will also involve a writing assignment. Enrichment activities with creative and critical thinking, speaking, and art activities will be included as well as an extension of the reading and writing skill development. Creative Writing (Sessions 1 & 2) Mrs. Laurie Lopez 1st grade -‐ 4th Grade 12:00-‐1:25 This two-‐week course will focus on narrative writing Common Core Writing Language Arts Standards (2W.3/2W.5/2RL.4). Students will work to create individual writing anthologies, which include narratives, real or imagined, descriptive pieces and poetry around summer themes such as vacations, gardens or the beach. Students will work to recount narratives using temporal words to signal the sequence of events. Students will use graphic organizers to plan and organize their writing. With guidance and support from the teacher, the students will respond to questions and suggestions from peers to add detail and strengthen their writing as needed. Science Fun 1st grade-‐ 4th grade 1:35-‐3:00 Mrs. Laurie Lopez Students will participate in hands-‐on science activities from Project Wild. The students will use the Step Up to Writing science writing format to record information about the activities. Students will make predictions about the results of the activity and record their theories in a journal. They will test their theories during the activity and record their results. They will analyze their results and discover what conclusions or further activities they might wish to do to test their theories further. SJS Future Chefs Ms. Margie Robertson 1st grade – 8th Grade 12:00-‐1:25 Learn to cook with Ms. Margie! During this two-‐week interactive class, students will have fun while learning to prepare healthy and delicious homemade snacks like mini pizzas, fruit kabobs and Ms. Margie’s “special” cookies. Students will create a personal recipe book and learn about nutrition as they measure, prep, cook and gain kitchen skills. Best of all, they will have the opportunity to eat everything that they make! Please notify Ms. Margie if your child has any food allergies. There is a $10 materials fee for this class. JOSEPH SCHOOL 2015 SUMMER SCHOOL KID’S CLUB REGISTRATION FORM (656-4361 when school office is closed ) St. Joseph Summer School Kids Club will be available after the Vacation Bible School Session during the week of 6/22/15 and before and after school during session one and session two of our full day schedule for summer school. Morning Kids Club is open from 7:30am – 8:15am and reopens after the Summer School classes end at 3pm, (3:15pm during Vacation Bible School), and remains open until 6pm. Registration Fee: There is no registration fee for Summer School Kid’s Club. Hourly rate: The cost for this service is $7.00 per hour and will be billed in 15 minute increments, or portion thereof. $1.00 - W ill be charged per minute/per child after 6:00 p.m. Implied Consent: If your child has not been picked up within 15 minutes of dismissal, the Implied Consent rule will go into effect. Implied Consent is for emergency situations where a parent is unable to pick up their child after Summer school, or is negligent about picking up their child on time. The Implied Consent rule will begin 15 minutes after summer school dismissal. Students who have not been picked up within that 15 minutes will be sent to Kid’s Club but will be billed for the time beginning when the dismissal bell rang. Payments: Please use the below chart to pre-pay for your hours if you anticipate regular use. If prepayment is not made, hours used must be paid at the time the child(ren) are picked up.
