Station 1: Absolute Value
The Fruity Snack Company is packaging
Froot Loops cereal in small snack bags.
Each snack bag is to weigh 30 grams with
a tolerance of 1.6 grams.
a. Draw and label a graph on the number line on your answer sheet that
describes the weights, w, in grams of the snack bags that will be
accepted.
b. Draw and label a graph on the number line on your answer sheet that
describes the weights, w, in grams of the snack bags that will be
rejected.
c. Write an absolute value inequality that describes the weight, w, in
grams of the snack bags that will be accepted. Solve the inequality.
d. Write an absolute value inequality that describes the weight, w, in
grams of the snack bag that will be rejected. Solve the inequality.
e. At this station you will find 5 snack bags of Froot Loops. Weigh each
snack bag and record the weight in the table on your answer sheet.
Determine which bags are NOT within the tolerance range and will be
rejected by the Fruity Snack Company.
PLEASE DO NOT OPEN THE BAGS AT THIS STATION!
THANK YOU!
Station 2: Inequalities
Contour Designs, Inc. has developed a
measuring scale for customers to determine which
size ergonomic PerFit Mouse to purchase.
At this station you will find the advertisement from Contour Designs, Inc.
a. Using the measuring scale on the advertisement, measure the length
of your mouse hand (the hand you would use to operate a mouse at a
computer). Record the length on your answer sheet.
b. Determine and record which size mouse you should purchase
according to the given scale.
c. If x represents hand length, write inequalities to represent each of the
five sizes represented in the table.
d. Graph each inequality on the number lines provided and write the
answer in interval notation.
Station 3: Set Notation & Absolute Value
Solve each absolute value inequality below. Then write the answer in each
form:
Set Builder:
Number Line:
Verbally as distance: βAll numbers that have a distance of (or less than
or greater than) ___ from ___β
Interval Notation:
a. |π₯| β€ 7
b. |π₯ β 2| > 4
c. |π₯ + 2| β€ 8
Now, we are going to go in the other direction. Change the following
intervals to absolute value notation (inequalities).
Hint: It is easier to graph on a number line first, find the center and the
distance, and then determine the absolute value inequality.
d. [β8, 8]
|π₯ β ππππ‘ππ| = πππ π‘ππππ
e. (β3, 3)
|π₯ β ππππ‘ππ| < πππ π‘ππππ
f. (ββ, β4) ππ (4, β)
|π₯ β ππππ‘ππ| > πππ π‘ππππ
g. (ββ, β6] ππ [β2, β)
h. [4, 12]
Station 4: Unions & Intersections of Sets
Use a colored pencil to shade the appropriate part of the Venn Diagram on
your answer sheet.
a. π΄ βͺ π΅
b. π΄ β© π΅
c. π΄ β© π΅ β© πΆ
d. π΄ βͺ (π΅ β© πΆ)
Draw a Venn Diagram to represent the union and intersection of the two
sets. Then list both the union and the intersection.
π
= {π, β , β , β , β}
π = {÷, β , ! , β , β , β , β΄}
e. Complete the Venn Diagram on your answer sheet.
f. π
βͺ π
g. π
β© π
There are 18 superheroes. 9 wear capes and 5 wear capes and masks. The
rest of the superheroes wear masks, but do not wear capes.
h. Complete the Venn Diagram on your answer sheet by placing the
number of each in each part of the circle.
i. How many superheroes wear masks, but no capes?
