Human Presence Detection System
Introduction
Being able to detect the presence of humans has long been something which
security systems are designed to do. Whilst there are many solutions out there, a
common one in home security systems being infrared, it is becoming increasingly
necessary to find methods of detection that are more difficult to fool. Security
services working at correctional facilities and border crossings are especially
concerned with preventing the illegal transportation of humans and also animals.
There are many people out there who make a profit in the trafficking of human lives
and being able to clamp down on this practice will help put an end to needless
suffering. The conditions faced by trafficked people are lamentable and it is in their
best interest that they receive the attention that their current situation demands.
Human Presence detection also plays a significant role in being able to guarantee
the security of correctional facilities, which in turn will greatly improve the safety of
the population.
Background
With over 7,000 vans passing through the port of Dover each day, it is clear that no
security force has the time to check the length and breadth of every vehicle that they
inspect. Advances in technology come slowly and are often developed to counter the
ingenuity of criminals, rather than thinking ahead. Security forces find themselves to
be frequently on the back foot when put up against the increasingly novel methods
used to hide humans in vehicles.
To this end, Geovox Security Inc. have made use of technology made to military
specifications to develop a human presence detection system that will help to greatly
reduce the transportation of humans. The technology is similar in concept to that
used to detect the occurrence of earthquakes.
This system is known as the Advanced Vehicle Interrogation And Notification
(AVIAN) Heartbeat Detector.

Solution
The AVIAN Heartbeat Detector is an incredibly sophisticated piece of equipment:

Industrial Grade Technology
Human heartbeats vibrate at a specific frequency. The AVIAN uses four geophone
sensors to analyze the vibrations of a vehicle, before using an algorithm to interpret
the data and decide whether a human is present on board. It does this by locating the
shockwave generated by a human heart, which is transmitted through any surface
that the body is in contact with. Non-Intrusive.
There is no need to worry about damage to the vehicle, as the sensors are
lightweight and will cause no marks. The sensors can be applied to any hard part of a
vehicle’s chassis, meaning that the vehicle does not need to be opened up in order to
be inspected. This greatly increases the amount of vehicles which can be processed
in a limited amount of time. Each sensor is attached to the computer using a 50’
cable, which means that there are few vehicles that they could not be used with.

Adaptable
As this system only uses four sensors and a small computer, it can be deployed with
a minimal amount of set-up. The sensors can be used for vehicles with two, three
and even four axles and still provide an accurate reading. A two axle vehicle only

requires two sensors to be used in order to produce an accurate reading, with the
computer helpfully informing you how many should be placed on the vehicle you are
currently inspecting.

Convenient
This device comes in a fly-away case, allowing it to be used quickly. It is remarkably
small and notably light, meaning that it can be easily stored and moved around. It
can swiftly be applied to all different types of vehicles and containers. The AVIAN
Heartbeat Detector can be powered using conventional power outlets, but can also
be equipped to be used with the cigarette-lighter plug that is found in any vehicle.

Efficient
After 90 seconds of detection, the computer only requires a further ten seconds to
decide whether the vehicle contains life. In some cases, the process can take as little
as 14 seconds. Since all living things have a heartbeat, it works with 100% efficiency
to detect the presence of both humans and animals. Once the scan has been
completed, the sensors are automatically reeled back into their case, ready to be
redeployed immediately.

Precise
As the AVIAN Heartbeat Detector uses four sensors, it can accurately inform you of
the precise location of the detected heartbeat. It compares the information it receives
from each sensor to tell you where the heartbeat frequency originates. The
technology is able to ignore any weather conditions, including strong wind and rain,
in its analysis. This also means that the cargo can be checked without any
unnecessary that would otherwise be required.

Cost Effective
The AVIAN costs less than would be spent hiring an extra security worker and will
provide far more value over its lifetime, being able to scan several vehicles in the
time it would take a human to adequately search a single vehicle. The computer
system will require no upkeep, bringing down costs even further. The AVIAN comes
equipped with four sensors and cables, as well as a spare one of each.

Simple to Implement
Though the computer is a complicated piece of hardware, it uses software which
displays all the relevant information on a single screen. The icons are clear and
straightforward to interact with and the data can be easily extrapolated from what is
presented.
