The Trustees are happy to report that after months of negotiations and
planning, our two-phased energy enhancement program has been
completed.
During September and October 2016, all interior and exterior lights or
fixtures on the campus were converted to LED bulbs and/or fixtures.
Through the use of SDGE rebates, this $77,000 project was completed at
a cost of only $19,150 and will reduce our annual electric bill by $8,000 $10,000.
As a result of the reduction in electrical demand from the conversion to an
all LED campus, we reduced the size of our PV solar system from 175 to
144 panels. These 365 watt, US manufactured solar panels are
strategically located on three roofs in the preschool area and are expected
to further reduce our annual electric bill by another $18,000.
We anticipate our annual $38,000 - $40,000 electric bill will be reduced to
approximately $10,000/year and that our investment in this project will be
paid off within 60 to 72 months. Our net utility savings over the 25-30-year
life of the panels is expected to be in excess of $800,000.
We will continue to update the congregation about the actual cost savings
generated by the PV solar system, as well as the positive environmental
impact in terms of reduced CO2 emissions and equivalent number of trees
saved.

Last fall, following my presentations on the divisive
debates within the United Methodist Church on
homosexuality, I planned for us to spend the first of
the year in small group discussion on issues of
human sexuality. However, as time has passed and
the new denominational commission has yet to
convene, I’m postponing our conversations. This
doesn’t diminish my commitment to a fully inclusive
church, but, pastorally, I would like us to engage
and struggle with another pressing issue – that being race and diversity in America - what has been
called “our nation’s greatest wound.”
This is a complex topic and so for our purposes, I am narrowing the focus to
exploring various first person accounts of what it is to be an American. My
desire is to enable deeper learning and appreciation of our diversity and to
explore the issues that are at the root of our national divisions. As a church
family, I intend for us to examine all of these stories in light of Jesus’ teachings on what it means to be a neighbor.
So, for 2017, I invite you to join me in a study I am calling, “Who is My
Neighbor? Cultivating Community in Diverse America.” We will meet 5 or 6
times during the year for 1-2 week sessions. We will read a book ahead of
each meeting and then gather for Bible study about one of the “neighbor”
teachings in the Bible, followed by a small group discussion of the chosen
book. The schedule is still developing but here is a start:
Feb. 14 & 21 – Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race
by Debby Irving
April 25 – Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance
June 6 – Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
June 27 – We will look at a Mexican-American Story – TBA
September 5 – We will read a Muslim-American Story – TBA
Please purchase or acquire these books yourself and I would appreciate
any input on resources that may benefit our study. Let us know you are
coming by signing up at the Welcome Table or marking your Connection
Card on Sundays beginning January 29th. All meetings will be on Tuesdays
at 6:30.

SAN CARLOS UMC GOOD NEWS | FEBRUARY 2017
The New Year is off and running. On Saturday, January 14th, we gathered for the “Stop
Hunger Now” event. Together we packaged 22,000 meals, for people we do not know;
living in a place unknown to us. People who know nothing about us or who we are will
eat because we spent two hours together to package food.
GREG LADUE
A s s o c i a t e Mi n i s t e r
We did this together and we had fun doing it. But ultimately this is not why we did it. We
may have done it because it was “nice” or “good”. But the reality is our lives are now
connected to people we will never see or know. I find that so amazing. Such a God
thing. I have always had a sense that we are all connected and I think the heart of Jesus’
message is that we are all connected. What we do for others we do for and to ourselves. It is, in a way, that “pay it forward” message that Martha mentioned in a recent
sermon.
As we go into this New Year, I want to approach things with that sense of
connection. A connection to our self, others and God. The reality is we need each
other. God is calling us to be a place of unity, peace and connection. I am looking for ways to connect in this
year, ways I may not have tried before or perhaps not for some time. I suspect I will find God in this
endeavor. And you will too.
Blessings,
Pastor Greg
TUESDAY NIGHT ADULT STUDIES
Lenten Retreat
Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm following Vespers.
February 25th
Origins of the Bible
January 31st & February 7th
The Bible is an ancient book, written in languages
other than our own. It originated in a culture very
different than our own. The story of how it came down
to us is fascinating and an essential feature of our
Christian faith. In this two-part series we will explore
four important factors: (1) Transmission of the text
(how the biblical texts were preserved); (2) Translation
of the text (how it emerged into English); (3) Formation
of the canon (the process of how these particular
writings came to be in our Bible); and (4) Inspiration
(what does it mean that the Bible is “inspired”?) The
Rev. Jim Seaton will lead this series. Join us for the
Vespers service at 5:30pm in the sanctuary, followed
by refreshments in the Fireside Room prior to the Bible
study.
When Lent comes you have to put away the tinsel
and take down the Christmas tree and stand out in
the open…vulnerable, and answer,
if you know him or not.
- Ann Weems
Lent, like Advent, is a time of reflection and
contemplation. On Saturday, February 25th, from
8:30 to 11:00 am in Room 101, join Pastor Greg
LaDue as we prepare for Lent by taking time to
do Holy Reading and Holy Visioning. Invite a
friend and come join us as we gather to prepare
for this holy season with contemplation. Light refreshments will be served. Nursery care will be
available upon request.

A NOTE OF THANKS…
Dear Friends,
Jefferson Elementar y
B o o k D ri v e
Throughout the year, we
donate books to the
parents and children at
Jefferson
Elementary
School. If you would like
to participate in this great
ministry, purchase one or
more books, bring them to
the church on Sunday,
February 26th, and drop
them off at the
Community Outreach
table. The books will be
given to parents who lack
the financial resources to
buy books to read to their
children. If you’re looking
for some suggestions, pick
up a flyer from the
Community Outreach
table.
Our family is very grateful for all the concern, support, and prayers that have
blanketed us ever since Ed’s injury. He is home now, and expected to make a
great recovery. It will just take a bit of time.
The beautiful prayer quilt wraps him in faith and supports our optimism.
Thank you so much for your quilt ministry.
Merry Christmas to all,
The Newtons - Evy, Ed, Jim, Matthew Makenna and Tiffany
Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for the beautiful poinsettia plant. I wish I was able to
attend church and see everyone but it is too difficult at this time. I keep trying
but this old body says not this week!! Think of you often.
Love,
Luci Miller
The beautiful red poinsettia from the sanctuary that Tonia Gombold brought
me made my surroundings so festive. Della Cole and Doris Jenkins bring me
the church bulletins and the printed sermons. These help me feel that I am an
active member, even though I can not attend the church services.
Most sincerely,
Jeanette Firth

Join us for our annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on Tuesday,
February 28th at 5:00 pm. Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday suppers enabled
believers to ”Feast before the Fast.” On Tuesday night before Ash
Wednesday, believers would enjoy all the foods that they would then give up
during the Lenten Season. Our party will feature a delicious meal (pancakes
with topping bar, sausage and fruit), great jazz music, and activities for the
kids. Come with your beads on and be prepared for a great evening. Purchase
your advance tickets Sunday, February 12th, 19th and 26th, on the patio after
each service or in the church office.
That’s Entertainment!

may also call the church office during the week. Be sure to get yours early as
these concerts fill up quickly!
HYGIENE KIT DONATIONS

they need your help to accomplish it. The items required are very specific.
Each month, we will be highlighting one or more of the items needed. If
possible, please purchase as many of the items as you can and drop them off
in the donation box at the Community Outreach table on February 19th.
Identify them for the “Hygiene Kits” project.

Dear Congregation.
It’s a new year, and the Youth Group meetings are in full session! The Youth are continuing to
study how our faith relates to others, and how different religious ideas can coexist, without
losing conviction in one’s own beliefs.
February will be a very busy month, kicking off with our first ever, annual Winter Retreat! The
kids will be heading up to Big Bear for ridiculous amounts of fun and fellowship, along with
some reflective, introspective moments.
DAVID BRAMLEY
