OCEAN COMMUNITY YMCA
2014 Community Impact Report
CVO & CEO Report
At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Through our focus on youth development, healthy
living and social responsibility, we embrace and nurture the promise that lies in all of us. We give
children, families and individuals of all ages the support and resources they need to be more healthy,
confident, connected and secure. Our mission is to put Christian principles into practice through
programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. As a charitable organization, this is our
commitment.
We believe we have something special—a sense of community—and that everyone should have
access to it, along with the programs and services that help us learn, grow and thrive. In 2014,
the Ocean Community YMCA proudly concluded a bold five year Strategic Plan and witnessed the
highest membership levels in the history of our association. We connected people of all ages and
backgrounds to enable them to gain the skills, abilities and mindsets to live their best lives. We count
on the support of our donors and partners to help us deliver on the promise to never turn anyone
away. In 2014 their caring spirit and generosity made it possible for 2,940 individuals to receive
YCares financial assistance to enable them to become a part of the Y family.
The Ocean Community YMCA has the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but to deliver,
lasting social change through collaborations with area hospitals, school systems and other nonprofits to deliver solutions to some of today’s most pressing social challenges. We are mobilizers of
creative solutions that bridge gaps to effect lasting and meaningful change. Every day our impact is
felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community
comes together for the common good.
As we look back at a most successful year, we know that our Y has a place in the hearts and minds of
more individuals in our region than ever before and that the best of the Ocean Community YMCA is
yet to come.

To serve more people through expanded
membership and program opportunities for all.
The Ocean Community YMCA will be
recognized as the leading community
organization in our area by directly
engaging children, adults and families
from all segments of our communities in
achieving healthier lifestyles. As a result,
we will inspire philanthropic support,
engage more volunteers, develop staff,
strengthen collaborations, and enhance
facilities. We will be fiscally responsible,
assuring the fulfillment of our mission.
Philanthropic Support
To foster an engaging culture which inspires
philanthropic support to advance emerging needs
and long-term financial strength.
Financial Management
Through responsible stewardship and
management, the Ocean Community YMCA will
enhance its financial position to fulfill its mission.
State of the Art Facilities
Enhance and plan for state of the art facilities
that meet the needs and expectations of our
communities.
Inspire Commitment
To provide staff and volunteers with training,
support and recognition in a way that inspires
performance and commitment to our YMCA
mission.
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
~ Mahatma Gandhi
FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Nurturing the potential of every child and teen.
The Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building
healthy, confident, connected and secure children.
The work we do at our branches, summer camps
and through off-site collaborations cultivate
the values, skills and relationships that lead to
positive behaviors, better health and educational
achievement. We are working at our branches as
well as in neighborhoods to address critical issues
impacting the ability for youth in our region to
reach their potential such as illiteracy, childhood
obesity and juvenile diabetes. The Healthy Living
and Youth Development programs at the Mystic
branch are in the communities of Norwich and New
London through collaborations with area nonprofits
and schools. Y Reads Literacy program is a
partnership with Norwich Public Schools to address
low literacy rates in elementary schools. In its third
year, the program has had remarkable success
increasing the reading aptitude of every child who
has participated. Likewise, the Y has partnered with
New London Public Schools to provide the wellness
and physical activity component of their extended
day enrichment program.
BEST SUMMER EVER
We know parents want the best for their kids
and that kids just want to have fun. At the Y, we
believe that all children deserve the opportunity
to discover who they are and what they can
achieve. Our summer day camps provide youth
with fun supervised activities that build selfconfidence and teach good sportsmanship. Day
Camp activities include arts and crafts, zip-lining,
nature exploration, swimming, boating, volleyball
and so much more. A strong focus on responsibility,
independence and caring for others is woven into
all elements of their camp experience. Our doors
are open to all and we are proud of our strong
record of providing YCares Financial Assistance.
Mystic Day Camp
• 305 children attended Mystic Summer Day Camp in 2014 with 27% receiving YCares Financial Assistance.
Camp Watchaug
• 623 children attended Camp Watchaug in 2014
with 26% receiving YCares Financial Assistance.
FOR HEALTHY LIVING
Improving the nation’s health and well-being.

health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.

community that is healthier, more confident, connected and secure.
Star Awards: The third annual Leadership Recognition Breakfast to honor this year’s
Star Award honorees was held on August 28th at the Ocean House in Watch Hill. The event
paid tribute to outstanding community leaders who personify the Y’s key values. Paul D.
Lynch, honored posthumously for his life’s work in Youth Development; (pictured left to
right) Paul’s son Peter, son David and wife Ellen; Edward P. Smith for Healthy Living; Richard C.
Holliday for Social Responsibility and Maureen Fitzgerald, President & CEO.
REACH AND RISE MENTORING PROGRAM
Volunteers Making an Impact
Our volunteers take an active role in bringing about meaningful, enduring change in the communities in
which they live and work. Reach & Rise® Mentoring Program is a youth mentoring initiative established
at the Ocean Community YMCA in 2014 to provide young people at risk with a positive one–to-one adult
relationship. The program serves youth ages 6 – 17 who lack consistent role models and who are in
communities challenged by poverty, crime, truancy and other social issues. Mentors volunteer their time
to participate in a thorough training program to prepare them with the skills they need to provide quality
one-to-one mentoring services and have a life-changing impact on the children involved.
