WELCOME.
S
ix years! It’s incredible
to think how a chance
conversation back in 2008 has
grown and flourished into the
film festival we have today.
Each year I am amazed at the
level of support and attention
the festival attains. A heartfelt
thanks to our title sponsor
Barry & Fitzwilliam, importers
of Corona, and to all our special guests, patrons, funding bodies,
companies, private sponsors, friends and businesses who all
contribute in some way, either through in-kind, voluntary or
financial support. We are grateful that you believe in what we do
and for the continued loyalty each year.
Over the years, we have developed the concept of hosting a film
festival in a village without a cinema. Through ‘Distributed
Cinema’ we use our own intranet network to convert the village
of Schull into many different screens. Our archive has now been
expanded to include edited interviews, Q&As and local interest
films from festivals gone by, as well as past submission winners.
This is a free service, which operates all year round, simply
by using your smartphones, laptops and tablets anywhere on
Schull’s Main Street. Go on, explore the archive!
I wish to pay tribute to Maurice Seezer and Maria Pizzuti, who
step down after five years with the festival. We thank you for
the hard work, long hours, creative ideas and, of course, the fun!
Good luck to you both in the pursuit of new dreams and ventures.
I would also like to acknowledge the commitment of those who
work so hard all year, just for the love of it. Hilary McCarthy,
Pauline Cotter, Chris O’Dell, Bridie D’Alton, Martin Levis and Paul
Goode. All incredible people who get the job done and exceed
expectations year after year - what a team! Also to our new
‘Decorating Committee’, for dressing the town and venues in a
blaze of spectacular colour and vibrancy - thank you.
So if you would ladies and gentlemen – it’s time to take your seats,
sit back and enjoy the show!

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR.
T
he theme of this year’s festival
is the collaborative nature of the
filmmaking process. Charlie Chaplin, who wrote, produced,
directed, acted in, and composed much of
the music for his films, is one of the few
individuals in cinema history who was
justified in placing the words “a film by”
over his name in the opening titles. But
even he needed help. So he hired
production designers, editors, props men, hairdressers, caterers,
cinematographers, drivers, make up artists, construction men and
many, many others to assist him to create his masterpieces. Most
young filmmakers commence their careers with the understandable
ambition to be directors. But on the average production, for example
a modern day television drama, where sixty or seventy people will
be in and around the stage or on location together, there will be only
one director; everyone else is in a skilled support role. There will
also only be one director of photography, only one editor, only one
costume designer, each leading a well disciplined team of skilled
individuals forming the group that enables the director to interpret
the writer’s intention and get it on the screen.
We want to encourage the learning of the many diverse skills that
combine to make a film, and we are introducing some of the craft
elements in the form of seminars and workshops at this year’s
festival. We hope to be able to extend these workshops throughout
the year, to enable filmmakers to come together and learn not only
from distinguished industry professionals, but from each other. Our
ambition is to develop an ongoing commitment to the arts and crafts
of cinema. Another outstanding filmmaker, Peter Greenaway, spoke recently of
the necessity for the “continual reinvention of the cinema”. Without
continual education there will be no reinvention of the cinema, or of
anything else, for that matter.

The following submissions entries have not been given an official
viewers classification. The films that contain obvious adult content,
violence or improper language are in programmes 5 and 6 and have
an over 18 recommendation.
Standard practice recommends that in the absence of classification,
festivals classify their entire programme as over 18. We thus
recommend that parents use their discretion as we aim to repeat parts
of the programme in various venues throughout.

I
ntroduced by Francoise Letellier, a
member of the Le Guilvinec/Schull
twinning committee.
On the 15th of January 2004, the
Guilvinec registered trawler
“Bugaled Breizh” (Breton for “Children
from Brittany”) sank off Lizard Point,
on the Cornish coast of England.
It went down in less than 2 minutes, without any explanation, 5
fishermen died. The submarine theory, catching in the nets of the
trawler is, for a lot of people the most plausible one. A submarine
capable of travelling the world without being spotted, a “silent killer”.
Traces of titanium, typical coating used on submarines, were found
on the wreck. This theory was accepted by the Quimper High Court
in 2008 and confirmed by the Rennes Court of Appeal in 2013. The
submarine remains unidentified.
The families of the 5 men are still searching for answers.

Q&A with the director Maurice O’Callaghan chaired by John Kelleher
will follow the screening.
S
et in 1960s West Cork, teenage
boy Harry O’Callaghan is given
the task of riding a newly purchased
horse home through the beautiful
Sheha Mountains. Over the daylong
journey he encounters a seductive
tinker woman (Caroline Morahan)
who tries to steal his horse, a
broken-down Protestant farmer (Jonathan Ryan) who gives him
poteen, a ghost-like figure of death (Jon Kenny) and a hallucinatory
vision of the famous battle of Kilmichael in the 1920s in which his

‘Living in a Coded Land’ is a poetic
and imaginative film essay that
makes unexpected links between
events and locations, history and
contemporary life. The film revolves
around the notion of a sense of place
and stories associated with place,
reflecting on traces of the past in the present and probing themes such
as the impact of colonialism, emigration, the famine, land, housing
and the place of art in society. Making extensive use of archive from
RTÉ and the IFI, the film seeks to explore the more elusive layers of
meaning that make up this country.

Starring Ben Kingsley, Connie Booth, and

satire on the Stalinist period of Russian

he heart-warming film, which is Steph Green’s feature debut,

Steve Coogan needs little or no

recently won his 5th BAFTA with ‘Alan

In 1999 Steve set up Baby Cow Productions
with Henry Normal, producing many
award-winning programmes including
‘Moone Boy’.
We are delighted to introduce Schull to his latest feature film,
‘Philomena’, starring alongside Judi Dench and directed by Stephen
Frears. Steve co-wrote ‘Philomena’ with Jeff Pope, winning Best
Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival 2013. It was nominated for four
Oscars and three Golden Globes.

ADELPHI CINEMA | 14.00 - 16.00 | ENTRY - €5
Director: Stephen Frears
Screenplay: Steve Coogan & Jeff Pope
Producers: Gabrielle Tana, Steve Coogan & Tracey Seaward
Starring: Judy Dench & Steve Coogan
‘Philomena’, an emotional story inspired by true events, tinged with
tragedy and comedy, about two very different people who join forces
on a remarkable journey seeking to uncover the truth behind a heartbreaking story that has remained a mystery for half a century.
Philomena Lee, an Irishwoman in her 70s, became pregnant as a
teenager in 1952. Her family abandoned her out of shame and sent
her to a convent in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary as ‘a fallen woman’. In
compensation for the nuns taking her in, she was made work in the
laundry with access to her young son, Anthony, for 1 hour a day. Age
3, Anthony was taken against her will when nuns at Roscrea agreed to
sell him for adoption to an American family. Philomena spent the next
50 years trying in vain to establish his whereabouts.
Unanimously regarded as one of Britain’s
finest directors, Stephen Frears has always
embraced a wide variety of styles, themes
and genres. He made his name in TV drama
for the first 15 years of his career. In the
1980s he turned to the cinema, shooting
‘The Hit’ starring Terence Stamp, John Hurt and Tim Roth and then,
‘My Beautiful Laundrette’ for Channel 4, which crossed over to bigscreen audiences altering the course of his career. After directing
‘Sammy and Rosie Get Laid’, and ‘Prick up Your Ears’, he began working
in Hollywood with ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ and ‘The Grifters’.
Returning closer to home, he directed ‘The Snapper’ and ‘The Van’,
‘Dirty Pretty Things’ and ‘Mrs Henderson Presents’. Stephen was
nominated for a second Oscar with ‘The Queen’ in 2006 and, most
recently, received four Oscar nominations for ‘Philomena’.
GABRIELLE TANA
Gabrielle is a film and television producer based in
New York and London. Following their successful
collaboration on ‘Philomena’, Gaby is now also
working with Baby Cow Films to develop their new
slate of projects.
TRACEY SEAWARD
Her previous assignment before ‘Philomena’ was
producing Danny Boyle’s Isles of Wonder, the epic
opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in
London. Philomena is her 5th collaboration with
Stephen Frears. She won a BAFTA as a producer for
The Queen, for which she was also Oscar-nominated.

General of the BBC. In 2004 he became Chancellor of University of
York, and in 2008 he was appointed Chair of the British Film Institute.
Last year Greg took up his latest post as Chairman of the FA, perhaps
becoming the first and last individual to Chair the BFI and the FA
