FleeingBritish persecution, themufti endedup inGermany duringthewaryearsandattempted toobtainpromises fromthe Germansthattheywouldnotsupporttheestablishment ofa Jewishnational homeinPalestine. Whentheboardof Yad Vashem,forexample,was askedto condemntheactofan Israeliarmy officer who instructed hissoldierstoinscribenumbers on thearmsofPalestinians, boardchairman GideonHausner"squelchedtheinitiative, ruling that ithad no relevanceto theHolocaust."39 PALESTINANS AND THE JEWISH HOLOCAUST Sinceitsemergence on theinternational scene,thePLOhas alwaysdistinguishedbetweenZionistsandJews.In thisitdiffers sharply fromIsraeland all themajorJewishand Zionistorganizations worldwide, whichidentify Zionismand Israelas Jewishandmaketheirclaimto Palestineon thebasisof thatJewishness. The PLO has alwaysrejectedthiscoupling,referring to Israelnotas the"Jewish State"butas the"ZionistEntity." In contrast to the PLO and Palestinian intellectuals, however,mostPalestinians call theiroppressors"Jews,"a name theiroppressorschose forthemselvesand on whosebasistheyjustify theiroppressionofthePalestinians. ButIsraeland Zionismarehorrified bysucha reference andjudgeitas a signofPalestinian anti-Semitism.
