“JACK PETCHEY AWARD” Winners
We are very proud of our first two Jack Petchey Award winners—Earlando and
Liam! Well done!
Earlando has been nominated for immense bravery facing every day, smiling
whenever he can and continuing to try and keep learning. Liam has over come
huge medical and health issues that impacted his ability to attend school. Liam
has much improved school attendance and is working very hard towards
achieving his targets.
Our two boys were honoured together with 220 other pupils in the
Croydon Borough on Tuesday 21st June at the schemes awards
evening at Fairfield Halls. It was an inspirational evening sharing in so
many pupils achievements! You can read more about the scheme

Caring First, Respect Always.
The Head writes…
We as a school have been united in our grief at the
passing of Aaron and Otto this term.
We continue to remember them daily. Rainbow and
Sunshine classes are creating special areas of
reflection and rememberance in the garden.
We would like to ensure our bereaved parents and
staff of our support.
There has never been a time of more flux within our government and
uncertainty surrounding the possible impact on our pupil’s future.
Here at Rutherford we continue to deliver a dynamic and relevant curriculum
with extra-curricular activities which will continue to support our pupils in their
development. Our sixth form enterprise scheme has proved to be a great
success and we now have a school tuck shop managed by the sixth form
students every Thursday.
This term almost all our students have taken part in educational visits to the
Polka theatre, Canal boat trip, Garden centre, and Dean City Farm. Such
opportunities for students to develop their social & cultural understanding are
a key part of learning outside of the classroom and making sense of the world
around us. In addition, we continue our Ramadan Celebration with music,
sweets and costumes.
It has been a real pleasure this week to have had the opportunities to
recognise the achievements and successes of pupils in each of the classes,
Ladybird, Sunshine, Lollipop and Rainbows. Well done to them all.
Thank you to all the parents and carers that attended the achievers assembly
on Wednesday. We also want to offer a big thank you to all the parents and
carers that helped set up stalls during the Summer Fair and those that
supported us with their attendance. It was lovely to see you all again.
We are looking forward to welcoming all the pupils to the summer club this
year, and the exciting activities that have been planned for the students.
Finally, I am delighted to announce the two winners for the Jack Petchy award
scheme. Well done to the following pupils on their achievements. Liam Green
and Earlando Morgan.
Next year we will have the pleasure of nominating two more pupils for
2016/17, and announcing the outcome of the nomination in the autumn. In addition there is a Leader Award for a member of staff who has made an impact
on the pupils. Good Luck to both staff and pupils.
I hope you all have a good summer break, and I look forward to seeing you
next term.

Aiming High Saturday Club
Greetings to all.
I want to start by thanking Jenny Borg,
who has now retired for all the hard
work she has done in the past. As the
co-ordinator of the scheme she was
instrumental in keeping our Saturday
club running smoothly at Rutherford
school and will be missed by all the
parents, staff and students.
It’s not all sad news though as I am
now taking on the mantle of keeping
this outstanding club going. Yippee! I
look forward to providing an inclusive,
stimulating and safe environment with
plenty of fun for all our students who
attend the club.
So to start off my new tender we had to
have a referendum. Oh no not another
one! Well, with the majority of people
voting to leave the EU and the England
football team leaving the EU it was
down to the Saturday club students
and staff to have their say. All the
students participated in making the
voting box, polling station signs and
setting up a private area to vote. Each
student then took their turn to vote on
the choices below.
Parents joined in too and enjoyed
voting in a secretive manner and
took the whole experience very
seriously. Most of them shielded
their vote from the cameras and
demanded a recount if the vote
goes against their wishes. Stay
tuned as the results will be announced in the next newsletter.
We will end this short article by
me thanking all the staff and
nurses for giving up their valuable
time to work on Saturdays and
supporting me in my new role. I
know I speak for all the parents
as well in saying the staff at
Rutherford school do an
outstanding job and it is much
appreciated.

By now you need no introduction to our lovely
friends at Phoenix
Motorcycle Training.
Daren has been taking
part in their annual
Christmas Charity Bike
Run. He wanted to do
something for the pupils
We would like to thank you, the friends and families of Rutherford School, for all
your support and generous giving during the last term.
Money donated and that we raise together helps to advance the children’s education and improve the quality of their school life. All the events we hold and so
many of the donations that are made to us are used to purchase equipment and
fund activities that enriches the pupils lives.
This is only possible with your continued help and support.
We always appreciate any offers of help, time or donations of goods or services.

SUMMER FAIR
On the 9th July we had our Annual Summer
Fair. We were fortunate to have a dry
day, warm day.
We had stalls, delicious hot food and ice
cold drinks. There were many fun activities
for the kids. The high light of the day was
the visit from Queen Elsa from the movie
Frozen and a real life Minion!

Sunshines Salon
We introduced ‘Sunshines
Salon’ in the Spring Term
where Sunshine class offered
pupils individual pamper
sessions, this involved
massage, hairstyling and a nail
bar. The Sunshines pupils
really enjoyed helping their
peers. We aim to have another
session before the end of the
summer term and this will be
become a regular activity from
September with particular reference to the 6th formers who
will run it. We would like to
thank all the parents of pupils
in Sunshine class for attending
our coffee morning and making it successful. We are aiming to have at least one coffee
morning each term, as it was
thoroughly enjoyed by our
parents and staff.
Rainbow News
During the summer term, Rainbow class
have been working hard towards our
garden project. We Rainbows decided that
we would like to create a special part of
the garden for all to enjoy.
To do this we held a very successful cake
sale and again would like to thank
everyone for their support. We have also
been continuing to sell our toasty snacks
on a Tuesday.
With the money raised we made a couple
of trips to Knights and Woodcote garden
centre to purchase plants and garden
decorations. We are excited to say that
our garden project is almost complete and
look forward to sharing it with you all
soon.

”Pupils achieve outstandingly well” - OFSTED 2015
Sunnies Chessington
Adventure
We met some lovely Panda’s and their cubs. We also
saw the Sea Lions play in the water. The pupils loved
their barking noises! We had an underwater expedition
and Vaahin liked the Jelly Fish most of all!
3 Brave Sunshine Warriors set
off with their guides to explore
the wild and brave the rain!
Our safari took us to
Chessington where we came
face to face with a huge male
lion. Charlie was not afraid at
all and roared right back at him.
He certainly let them know who
is King of the Sunshine Jungle!
Sulaiman was keen to become
part of the Penguins of
Madagascar's flock. He met
Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and
Private.
Sunshines love to go out and we had many enjoyable
trips this term. We went to Mordenhall Park, the cinema
- on a couple of occasions and trips to Croydon to go
shopping.
Our last trip this term is a poignant one to Woodcote
Garden Centre where we will buy a rose bush to plant in
memory of our dear friend Otto. We are planning to
create an area of remembrance in his honour! We all
miss Otto very much.

Welcome to Honey & Mustard!
We are very excited to announce that
we have two new school members...
Our bouncy bunnies, Honey and
Mustard!!
Now, they're not ordinary rabbits,
they're actually magic... no, they really are! They have performed in several magic shows but have decided to
leave their top hats behind to share a
bit of magic with us.
This double act love to be cuddled,
and our children are pros at giving
hugs... There simply couldn't be a
better match!
Maypole Dancing!
David and Sarah planned a great
assembly doing Maypole
Dancing and celebrating the
start of warmer weather and the
promise of summer. Although
we are still waiting on the
promise of better weather and
warm sunny days we all had
great fun!

Lollies News
Lollipops have had a very busy
term…..we’ve done lots on work on our
theme ‘Community.’ This has included a
number of educational visits into the local community, including visits to Poll Hill
Garden Centre, Brighton and Coombe
Gardens. The pupils have all thoroughly
enjoyed their experiences whilst out of
school. Some pupils also visited the Polka Theatre to see performances of
‘James and the Giant Peach.’ This was a
great experience for everyone who
attended, and the theatre also
completed workshops at school, to
support the pupils understanding of the
story.

Term 2016
Class sessions this term have included
gardening sessions, during which we’ve
made bird feeders and placed them in
the garden. Our local squirrels have
particularly enjoyed the bird food on
offer, although we’ve have seen some
birds visiting our feeders! We have a
robin who visits regularly. We aim to
continue feeding the birds during the
next academic year, and hopefully photograph them using our feeders! We’ve also
enjoyed meeting the new school pet rabbits – ‘Honey and Mustard.’ They are
lots of fun to watch and we hope to have
lots of cuddles over the future years.
LONDON MARATHON!
Barry Plummer together with Daniel Cormack, Emily Frost, Brenhan Heath and Shane Ross ran the gruelling
London Marathon in aid of The Garwood Foundation and Rutherford School. Together they raised over
£20 000.00! What an AMAZING total and great achievement!
Here is what Barry had to say about his training!
“…. The first run was in driving rain and uphill through the streets of Coulsdon, Purley and Chipstead. I completed the 5 mile run fairly easily and in a good time which I was pleased about.
Roll on nearly 4 months and on Good Friday I set the alarm for 0545 in order to get up and have breakfast before
embarking upon my last road training run which was over 20 miles. I meandered through the streets of
Coulsdon, Purley, Wallington, Carshalton, Sutton and Chipstead. I was running within myself quite happily and
on for 3 hours when at just over 15 miles I got a sharp pain in both of my calves. It was like I had been shot
(although I have never been shot so I don’t really know what that is like!!) and it was cramp. I had drunk too
much water and not replaced enough of the salt I had lost. I stretched, walked, ran, got cramp again, stretched,
walked, ran, cramp again (repeat)………………you get the picture!
I had Georgia’s image in my head and knew what a fighter she had been and still is and I dug deep and got on
with it. I finished a lot slower than I was hoping but I finished the 20 miles in pieces both physically and
emotionally. Tears were streaming down my face as I said to my wife “I don’t want to let Georgia or the other
children down………….I want them to be proud of me”.
I gradually pulled myself together whilst recuperating in the bath and playing with my own children in the
garden later that day but it took me a couple of days to get back to normal.
On Monday 11th April I visited Rutherford School where I saw Georgia and some of her fellow pupils. The staff I
had the pleasure of meeting are some of the most caring and thoughtful people I have met and it is clear the
children absolutely adore them. I met a few of the children who all have major disabilities, cannot speak and
have severe learning difficulties.
Whilst they weren’t able to speak to me the recognition in our eye contact and holding of hands needed no
words whatsoever. After spending a powerful 2 hours with them I left the school with tears in my eyes and with
more determination in my heart than ever to succeed. I sadly learned last night that 2 of the children passed
away at the end of last week which has filled me with sadness but I know they will be with me next Sunday.
This time next week I will hopefully be reflecting upon my achievement in completing the 2016 London Marathon. I don’t want to break records, I just want to finish in a respectable time and in good health. Most
importantly I want Georgia and her classmates to be proud of me as well as all of my friends, my family and my
work colleagues who have all supported me.
They have helped me smash my £5k target, my £6.50k target and now helped me smash through my £7k target.
As I type this I have raised £7,092 which is truly overwhelming. I hope to reach £7,500. I cannot do enough for
Georgia and her fellow pupils and for Rutherford School. You all now have a special place in my heart and I will
try my best to support you in the future. As I write this I am anxious, nervous, excited and emotional about Sunday but I will ensure everything is channelled in the right direction to help me get through.

This is a vital but very expensive piece of equipment that is used
for positioning pupils out of their chairs. These beds are integral to
all of pupils positioning programs and comfort.

Summer Holiday!
Summer Term in Ladybirds Class
Ladybirds have had a very interesting summer term. We had a new pupil join us, Percy, while he
was waiting for his new school place in Brighton to be ready. Percy has settled well into
Rutherford school life and has tested our signing skills. The class team are now very competent
at telling what comes next!!
Crystal has been off school due to kidney problems and a dislocated hip, we hope she will soon
be better and will be able to re-join us in September. Rosie went in to hospital for day surgery
and ended up staying three months! (I think she just didn’t want to do any maths lessons!)
However, she is now back at school and looking fabulous.
Following our topic of community Ladybirds have visited Dean City Farm, had a boat trip down
the Thames and the Llama Park. Adam has made several visits to the library and also bought
stock for the tuck shop he has been helping to run.
The pupils have all been working hard on their targets as well as having some fun and I am sure
they are now looking forward to the summer holidays.
The pupils in Ladybird class want to thank all their class staff, Lucy, Karen, Sophie, Jackie, Julia,
Charlotte and Caroline for all their help this year.
