Please don’t hesitate to call or come by our office this summer if I can help you in any way. Mrs. Coleman Cafeteria News It’s hard to believe that summer vacation is just around the corner. We will be celebrating School Nutrition Week May 1-5. May 5th is School Lunch Hero Day. To honor his lunch ladies, author Jarrett J. Krosoczka wrote a book series entitled “Lunch Lady” exemplifying how important school lunch is and the women that provide it. The cafeteria staff thanks you for allowing us to serve healthy meals to your children and looks forward to serving them again next year. Please pay any balance owed by May 31 to ensure that your child’s account will be in order for next year. If you have questions about balances please call Julie at 387-6540, and I’ll be happy to answer any questions. Parents of fifth graders, please be aware that the charge policy is much stricter at the middle school with the allowable charge dollar amount much less. Library News Thank you for all for the support you showed our library during our Spring Book Fair. The fair was a huge success and your funding allows our library to increase its collection of pleasure reading for all grade levels, as well as to add books and materials to support what is being taught in each grade. Without the support of our Glenvar families and friends, we could not continue to provide a current, appropriate, and useful reading resource for each and every one of our students. ****************************************************************************** During the month of May, I will be starting the end of the year procedures for the library. This means that all library books will be due after May 12. If your child cannot find their library book, there is still a good chance it will turn up. Here is a list of common places that students have found their library books in the past. In your desk? (#1 place where lost books are found!) Under your bed? In your friend’s desk? In your book bag? On the bus? Under the seat in your car? In the trunk of your car? On your bookshelves in your home? On your teachers’ bookshelves? At a friend’s house? At Grandparents’ house? Behind the sofa? Under the sofa cushions? On your nightstand? In your brother or sister’s bedroom or backpack? At your other house? In your desk? (Yes, look there again!!) In the library? Ask Mrs. Rakes to check the bookshelf to see if it is hiding there. Before you pay for a lost book, check these places! Good Luck. If the book still cannot be found, it must be purchased so that a replacement copy can be bought for our collection. I will send home a notice with the price of the replacement cost if it is lost. If the book is found over the summer and is in good condition, a full refund will be issued. Thank you, Mrs. Rakes a.k.a. The Book Fairy Preschool News Hello Preschool Families! It is hard to believe our year in preschool is almost over! We have a very exciting May planned though, so we will be going out with a bang! This past month has been very exciting, as we have continued our Pet/Vet theme in our classroom. We have really enjoyed working in the pet store and taking care of different animals. We really like to make houses for our animals with blocks and different building materials! Something SO fun that we did was go on a field trip to a REAL Animal Shelter! We got to see all the different things that the workers do there and even got to meet some animals! It was awesome! This month, we will be visiting Virginia Safari Park to meet all the animals there, we are so excited. We will also be going to The Little Feet Meet at Northside High School! We will continue to practice our letters and numbers, so we are ready for Kindergarten, as well as planting flowers, learning about life cycles, and learning about the ocean! Thank you for continuing to support your child's education! -Ms Brittni Aurichio Kindergarten News This month our kindergartners have been busy workers. We have been talking about spring, recycling, and life cycles. Money has been the big topic in math. Please practice counting coins up to $.10 using nickels and pennies. On May 12th, we will have Muffins with Mom starting at 8:30. Please try to make it. We have made lots of special gifts for you. Some important dates to look forward to are June 1st we will be going to the Safari Park. Field Day is June 5th. The end of the year picnic at Moyer Park is scheduled for June 6. The end of the year is coming fast!!! First Grade News First Graders are working very hard! In math, we are revisiting various units to review, remediate, or enrich the students as needed. We will work on money, addition, subtraction, and problem solving strategies. Please continue to practice counting by two’s to 100, telling time to the half hour, and counting a collection of coins up to $1.00. Please contact your child’s teacher if you need any additional ideas or resources to work with your child at home. We will continue having a math skill to focus on each night on our first grade homework sheet. In science and social studies we will complete our unit on communities. We will also expose the students to some basic Spanish language. We will talk about colors, numbers, and basic nouns from home or school. We will have a guest from the Western Virginia Water Authority visit on May 17. Ask your child about their experience with this program. We will be having an end of the year celebration toward the end of May. We will enjoy an ice cream sundae and participate in “beach themed” activities. You are invited to spend this time with your child. More information will be sent home at a later time. Thanks again for all of your support at home. First Grade is so exciting because the students grow and learn so much! You have played a huge role in this growth and we appreciate you! First Grade Teachers Second Grade News Math: Students have been learning about measurement. They’ve used rulers to measure length/ distance and balancing scales to measure mass/weight. They’ve also learned about capacity, volume, probability and various types of graphs. Students have also constructed their own graphs in class! We’ll be starting to learn about numbers to 1,000 and adding 2, 3digit numbers. Social Studies & Science: Students have learned about life cycles of a butterfly, frog, and the white tailed deer. They’ve also learned about magnets and matter. We’ll be learning more in science and will have a review on maps and map skills as well. Character Education: This is the time of year when students are getting excited because summer break is right around the corner. We ask that you please discuss with your child the importance of displaying good character at all times and being a good friend to everyone. A few friendly reminders: One healthy snack should be brought to school each day. Tennis shoes should be worn or brought each day. Please sign your child’s homework sheet each night. Please go over contents enclosed in your child’s Tuesday folder with your child. For reinforcement and mastery, please review and practice any incorrect items at home. Third Grade News Thank you to everyone that participated and helped to make our field trip to Amazement Square possible! We had a blast! The students were able to see some of our science and social studies units come to life by discussing Ancient Greece and Rome, seeing outer space in the planetarium, and discovering all sorts of things by exploring the other exhibits. Now it is that time of year to get in gear for the SOL tests! We have worked hard, and the time has come to show that it has paid off! Please use the materials in your child’s binders or notes that were taken out at home as a study tool. We suggest about 15-20 minutes a night reviewing the materials. Flash cards, rereading notes, making practice quizzes, using online review sites, old quizzes and tests, and review packets are just a few ways to prepare for the SOL tests. Knowing basic math facts and reading nightly will benefit your child greatly on the SOL tests. We will all be working on review materials at school which will be coming home for you to use as well. Before the days of testing, please ensure that your child gets a good night’s sleep and is at school on time. Remember, this year third graders will be taking the Math and Reading SOL. The Reading SOL will come first on May 17th and the Math SOL will be the 24th. Thank you for your continued help and support towards your child’s success in third grade! Here are a few sites with resources to use in preparation for the SOL: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/index.shtml - Please visit this website to look more into the new SOL testing format, practice items, and frequently asked questions http://www.ixl.com/ -for all third grade students to practice math skills. Thank you, Ms. Bush, Mrs. Chamberland, and Mrs. Fitzgerald Fourth Grade News We enjoyed our Natural Bridge/Lexington field trip on Thursday, April 13th! Thanks to everyone who helped make it a fun experience! We are continuing to prepare for our online SOL tests, which are right around the corner. Our tentative dates for SOL testing are as follows. VA Studies: Tuesday, May 16th; Reading SOL test: Friday, May 19th; Math SOL test: Thursday, May 25th. Please help your child get a good night’s sleep the night before each test and eat a good breakfast high in protein each morning. Thank you for your continued support at home to help everyone do their best! In Social Studies with Mrs. Bodine, we will focus on reviewing for our SOL test. Please remember to study and sign the Cumulative Review Packet with your child daily, as well as study our red binder and old quizzes/tests that will be sent home soon. Also, please check out Mrs. Bodine’s portaportal at http://guest.portaportal.com/jbodine for fun and effective review games and practice tests for Virginia Studies. The first site under Social Studies is “SOL Pass” and the password is “ges.” Study Island is also a great resource, and login instructions are listed in the link on the portaportal. There are other good review sites on there, as well. Please take advantage of these resources because the SOL test will be challenging, and it covers the entire year of material. We can do it! In Reading, we will also be reading, practicing, and reviewing for our SOL test. The teachers have some reading comprehension games on their portaportals that are good to use for all students. Additionally, reading with your child DAILY and discussing what you’ve read is a great way to improve comprehension. Specific skills to review at home are: main idea/detail, summarizing, making inferences, author’s purpose, using context clues to identify unfamiliar words, synonyms/ antonyms, and asking general comprehension questions where students can look back in the book or passage to answer. In Writing, we will continue to work on composing, revising, and editing skills. In Spelling, we will continue learning and reviewing word patterns with the Words Our Way curriculum. In Math, we are finishing up our last 2 units, Elapsed time (SOL 4.9) and Probability (SOL 4.13). We will spend most of May REVIEWING for our SOL test on May 25th! Continue studying 1520 minutes each night and staying on track with your Review Log so that your child can show you all he or she has learned in 4th grade Math. Remember, IXL and Mr. Mills’ portaportal have great review games and practice tests that will count as your 15-20 minutes of studying! As Practice Tests come home, please make sure to review them with your child. We are proud of their progress this year! Finish the year strong! Remember that we shared at the beginning of the year how the math SOL test is very difficult. Thanks for your extra support at home! In Science with Mrs. Van, we will be finishing up our last two units of the year! We will be participating in STEM projects to solidify our understanding of energy, motion, and electricity. I hope this will be an engaging time for our students as we wind down 4 th Grade Science! We will also use our Science time to review for the upcoming Math SOLs. During Science class, we will be applying our prior knowledge of measurement to various activities to support Math instruction. What a fun group of students we have had this year! Thanks to all the parents for your support through the year to make it such a good one! 4th Grade Teachers: Mrs. Bodine, Mr. Mills, and Mrs. Van Fifth Grade News Math - Fifth grade students are working hard to finish their curriculum studies and prepare for the SOLs On May 26. We are finishing our units on shapes and measurement in the next week. We realize the SOL tests are fast approaching, and we will be immersed in practice and review for the next several weeks. Each student is doing his/her best as we prepare for these tests. Your child should have materials to study in his/her notebook and notes from the year. So, these are available anytime you would like to work with your child at home. Also, do not forget about IXL; this is a GREAT resource to help with math practice and SOL prep. Mrs. Graham is certain that her math students will do their very best! Science – In science, we are reviewing for our May 15th SOL test! Remember, our test this year covers 4th and 5th grade material. Your child has lots of reviews and study guides that will help them prepare for the test. These papers are located in the front of your child’s science binder. The best papers to review are the 4th grade study guide (6 pages) and the 5th grade science review (2 pages). Please, please, please review every night! Global Studies – We just finished our Europe unit, and I could not be prouder of the PowerPoints and Country boxes that the students created. They did a wonderful job and worked very hard. We also want to thank Gulia Gustafson and Liliia Cochron for sharing their knowledge, pictures, and other artifacts from Italy and Ukraine. They did a great job, and the students love having speakers. We have just started our South America unit, which will consist of a “country poster” project with a partner. They enjoy being creative and doing research on the computer. Language Arts – We have finished all the skills and have begun to review everything we’ve learned this year in preparation for our May 18 SOL test. We are also getting return mail from the basketball teams and that’s been fun! Lastly, we had our end of the year field trip to the Pinball Museum, Butterfly Garden, and Green Hill Park for a Chick-Fil-A picnic. We had a blast!
