We, the Church of St. Francis de Sales, are a Community of Believers in Jesus Christ called to impact
Family, Neighborhood and Society with the Gospel so that people’s lives are filled with Hope.
MAY YOU HAVE A HAPPY, PROSPEROUS AND PEACEFUL NEW YEAR!
JESUS IS THE GIFT OF GOD’S LOVE IN EVERY TIME AND SEASON!
Thank you for your generous and gracious Christmas offerings for St. Francis Church. May
God bless you for sharing and enhancing the life of our parish Family.
As we are now in a reflective mood of the many wonderful celebrations of Christmas and are
still enjoying the beautiful music, we have to wonder why does it have to end so quickly. Shortly
after Christmas, the lights and decorations come down and are stored away for next year.
Crèches in our Churches and homes are put away after the Epiphany. It is a sad sight to see a
discarded Christmas tree, with only a few pieces of tinsel still hanging on, lying outside at the
curb.
We wish that the spirit of Christmas could last the whole year through. And why not? Even
Ebenezer Scrooge promised the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come: “I will honor Christmas in my
heart and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present and the Future.”
The lyrics of our Christmas Carols give us much to ponder and learn. One Christmas Carol
always baffled me. What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans and especially the partridge that won’t come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas? Well, I
finally found out. From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to
practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this Carol as a catechism song for
young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning
known only to members of their Church. Each element in the Carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember:
♦The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.
♦Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.
♦Three French hens stood for faith, hope and charity.
♦The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
♦The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old
Testament.
♦The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.
♦Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit - Prophesy,
Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership and Mercy.
♦The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.
♦Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit - Love, Joy, Peace, Patience,
Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control.
♦The ten lords a-leaping were the Ten Commandments.
♦The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.
♦The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles
Creed.
This interesting, enlightening segment of history will be forever more meaningful to me and I
hope to you each time you listen to this beautiful Christmas Carol. It has meaning beyond the
Christmas season. As we now venture into a New Year, let us keep the Christmas spirit alive in
our hearts.
May the Christ Child be with you and your family for a very happy, peaceful, healthy, blessed
and prosperous New Year.
Peace and joy,
