Exhibit has artifacts and photographs from 1913
“Now playing” in the Heritage
Center’s exhibit hall is a display of
artifacts and photographs giving us a
glimpse of “1913 – The Way It Was A
Hundred Years Ago.”
The exhibit is an extension of the
theme for our annual Contributing
Patrons Appreciation Dinner held in
January, and it’s based largely on the
narrative written for that occasion by
Julia A. McCullers, a member of the
Johnston County Heritage Commission.
Our display of artifacts from 1913 (or
thereabouts) comes from Art Andrews,
an avid collector of all things historical
who’s also a member of the Heritage
Commission.
Meanwhile, the dinner presentation
on 1913 – featuring a couple of skits by
volunteer re-enactors – is ready for us to
“take on the road” to any civic gathering
interested in this entertaining mode of
revisiting our history. We’ve done one

another scheduled for late summer before
a church-based group.

Spring 2013
Heritage Center beneficiary of $75,000 from charitable trust
Nan Ogburn Cullman, who grew up
in Smithfield, has named the Johnston
County Heritage Center a beneficiary of
$75,000 over the next 10 years from a
charitable trust she has established. The
gift comes with no restrictions.
Mrs. Cullman is the eldest daughter of
the late J.V. and Bunnah Jones Ogburn.
She presently resides in Beaufort, N.C.
with her husband, Hugh Cullman, retired
CEO of Philip Morris, Inc. Two of her
siblings are present-day Smithfield
residents: Lu Long Ogburn Medlin, well
known as a former “Miss North Carolina,”
and Vic Ogburn, long-time member of the
Smithfield Town Council.
Mrs. Cullman’s donation is the second
major gift to the Heritage Center since its
establishment in the late 1990s. The other
is an endowment funded by the Holding
family, principal owners of First Citizens
Bank which also donated the building that
houses the Heritage Center. The Holdings’
endowment each year distributes earnings
to the center through the N.C. Community
Foundation. This year we got $13,310.
With the Cullman gift, the Heritage
Center expects to cover 25 percent of our
annual operating budget with donations in
fiscal year 2013-14.
