National Week of Deaf People 2012

DECEMBER 2012
Damian’s Welcome
I am pleased to announce that WADS has
had a very successful and productive
beginning to this year. This includes progress
on our organisation's Integration and
Sustainability Review. The review is being
conducted by an external company, Matrix
on Board, to assess WADS' future
capabilities to service the needs of the Deaf
and hard of hearing in WA. We appreciate
the Disability Services Commission's funding
to conduct the review.

As part of the review, Matrix on Board has
Damian Lacey
consulted with various stakeholder groups,
including staff and management, deaf and hearing community representatives, industry
professionals and government representatives, to develop a well-rounded assessment of the
organisation. The report will be presented to the Board in April. Once this is received,
meetings will be organised so that the community will have the opportunity to participate in
further discussions.
The review includes a comparison between WADS and Deaf Societies from every state in
Australia. There are similarities and differences between the organisations, which helps to
highlight WADS' unique strengths in the state, but also the serious disadvantages and
challenges that we face.
The New Year also marked the halfway point of our 2010/2011 business plan. So far WADS
is doing very well in all areas and services have performed at or above expectations.
As you know, there have been changes in the Business Development department and in the
area of fundraising. I would like to thank Marisa for her contributions. After reviewing the
business development strategy, Michael Andersen, Fundraising and Marketing Manager at
Deaf Children Australia, will manage the Business Development unit together with Cyndy and
with the support of the local staff. These arrangements will be reviewed following the
outcomes of the Matrix review.
