SEPTEMBER 2013
Where has all the time gone? Montana Fiddle Camp started the summer off with the magic
that it always seems to produce, by the students and instructors. It is a wonderful time for all. For
those of you that have never attended “your” fiddle camp, try to make it next year. It is the most
reasonably priced camp that I have been able to find anywhere in this country. For the first time,
I was a student with mandolinist John Reischman. Being a student gave me a different insight
of what the camp is all about. This was possible only because Cole Flikkema ran the first week
of camp. I really appreciate what you have done for the camp (and in the kitchen).
The contest was the next event of the summer. With the help of the Districts and the
Choteau community we had better financial support than last year. One question that I have
about our annual event is, where are all the contestants that we used to have? We did major
advertising this year for the contest. Reg Wearley did 95% of the fundraising in the Choteau and
surrounding communities. The bottom line is that we need more participation in the contest. We
have a lot of great fiddlers in this state that should make the state contest a priority. Thanks go
out to the contestants that competed this year. Our hats are off to you.
Our highlight of the summer was the wedding of Katelyn (Buckley) and Tony Swanson.
Thanks to all our friends for attending this wonderful event. The weather was perfect, at the
Kleffner Ranch in Helena, that day. Welcome to the family Tony!!
Our state convention meeting will be held on Friday October 11th, 2013. There will be no
convention show this year. The meeting will be held at the Three Forks Sales Yard at 6:30pm. The
main part of the meeting will be the voting on the by-laws. You can get on our website
(montanafiddlers.org) and read the by-laws as ratified by the board of directors. This process has
been ongoing over most of the last 3 years. With the Three Forks Contest the next day, this
makes a great opportunity to take in both events.
That is all for now. Hope to see you all next month at the meeting and contest.
