minerals taxes threaten the
ability for the NT to capitalise on the mining boom.
The NT contributed just
1.5 per cent of Australia’s
GDP in 2010. The north needs
a new approach.
Lowering taxes and reducing government regulation
are proven strategies to encourage economic development. The federal Budget
should have focused on establishing this type of framework in northern Australia.
The NT Government
should work with the WA
and Queensland governments to build the case for a
northern special economic
zone, stretching across the
top of Australia.
Such a zone could become
a massive economic driver
that would boost the whole
Australian economy.

THE federal Budget lacked a
vision for the economic
development of the Northern
Territory, or northern Australia as a whole.
While funding to address
the skills shortage was welcome, it will not be enough.
What Australia needs is a
vision for unlocking more of
the investment opportunities
in Australia’s north.
The Government should
not just look to be ‘‘spreading
the opportunities’’ of the
mining boom. It needs to
ensure Australia remains
competitive against other
developing resource nations.
People in northern Australia recognise they live in
different conditions to those
in the south. Government
policy should recognise this.
A dire lack of infrastructure, skilled labour shortage,
skyrocketing house prices
and the looming carbon and
