Diamond Creek Football and Netball Club
Dear Members, Supporters, Past Players and Sponsors
Update of news from the Diamond Creek Football & Netball Club
The talk of the town this weekend was the Seniors one-point victory in the dying moments of the game.
Just in case you didn’t know this is how the game played out;
It was a lovely Sunday afternoon, so it was nice to sit around and watch some local footy, finals style at
Epping. There was a wind favouring the city end so when Diamond Creek won the toss, it was an easy
decision on which way to kick. Diamond Creek started brilliantly kicking 2 goals very early, but slowly
Fitzroy Stars found their rhythm and worked their way back by kicking goals against the wind. The 1st
quarter produced 8 goals so was quite entertaining. Quarter Time: Fitzroy Stars 3.2-20 vs Diamond
Creek 5.0-30
So what could Fitzroy Stars do with the wind? Well it wasn't a good start as Diamond Creek kicked the
1st goal to stretch their lead. It wasn't until the 18 min. mark that Fitzroy Stars kicked their 1st goal with
the wind. Diamond Creek did so well to defend this quarter, that they out-scored Fitzroy Stars. Half Time:
Fitzroy Stars 5.4-34 vs Diamond Creek 8.1-49
Diamond Creek did what they had to in the 3rd quarter and out-scored Fitzroy Stars with the wind. 3
Quarter Time: Fitzroy Stars 7.4-46 vs Diamond Creek 12.3-75
So the lead was 29 points, and the way the match was going so far, one would expect a comfortable win
for Diamond Creek. Wrong! Fitzroy Stars had other ideas and played a tremendous last quarter. They
were dominating the centre clearances and using the wind to great advantage. Goal after goal when at
the 17-minute mark they hit the front for the first time in the match by a point. However, Diamond Creek
now became desperate and pushed forward to score a behind to level the scores. The next few minutes
were tense and both teams really lifted giving 100%. Fitzroy Stars managed to hit the front by 5 points
and seemed over the line. But the ball found itself 20 metres out in the Diamond Creek forward line
where just about every single player was. Pack after pack, ball up after ball up. Then a clumsy tackle by
Fitzroy Stars resulted in a free-kick to Kane Tenace, 20 metres out, slight angle. As he was lining up the
final siren went. His kick went straight over the goal umpires head for a goal. Diamond Creek win on the
last kick of the day by a point. It was a great finish and this is what finals football is about.

Seniors
What a weekend! The last game of the weekend was the seniors against Fitzroy Stars and the one-point win with a
kick after the siren showed the never give up attitude that will hold us in good stead moving forward into the
Preliminary Final today against Hurstbridge. We have encountered Hurstbridge 3 times this season losing the first
but winning the more recent 2 games. We are traditional rivals and look forward to another tough competitive
game.

Reserves
The reserves unfortunately lost to Hurstbridge but the double chance gives us the opportunity to redeem ourselves
against what is expected to be a strong Thomastown side to gain entry to the Grand Final next week. We have met
twice this year with the teams sharing the wins. The last encounter was a one-point margin in favour of
Thomastown but it is our intent to reverse that this week.

Under 19’s
The under 19’s progressed straight to the Grand Final with a good win over Banyule. Poor kicking by Banyule with
more scoring shots helped keep us in the game early. We look forward to playing either Banyule again or St.
Mary’s following the outcome of this weekend’s preliminary final.

After 3 wins last week, we saw Diamond Creek 1 go straight into the Grand Final and Diamond Creek 2
and Diamond Creek 3 playing in the Preliminary Finals.
Diamond Creek 2 took on Whittlesea. A tight first quarter saw things close at the first break. Whittlesea
applied a tight defensive game, seeing our girls struggling to feed the ball down the court. Whittlesea
obviously had the momentum and they were not going to give it up easily. Persistence and team work
from the girls saw moments of great game play, but unfortunately it was matched every time. A loss on
the weekend 21-37, sees the end to Diamond Creek 2's season. Congratulations on an amazing season,
looking forward to seeing you guys come back next year stronger and more determined than ever.
Diamond Creek 3 played Greensborough. After being unable to beat Greensborough at all throughout
the season, we definitely went in the underdogs. Beginning the game steadily saw Greensborough with a
small lead at the first break. Some imperative coaching tips from Brooke George and a chance to
refocus, we came out firing in the 2nd quarter to take a 5 goal lead at half time. The final half saw
impressive team work, determination and just a sheer desire to close out the game. Keeping on top of
our opposition we managed to continue to extend upon our lead, winning 32-18.
This victory sees Diamond Creek 3 joining Diamond Creek 1 on Grand Final night, Friday 9th
September. Diamond Creek 3 take on Ivanhoe at 6:30pm and Diamond Creek 1 play Fitzroy Stars at
8:30pm. Both games will be at Parade College
Good luck to both Diamond Creek 1 and Diamond Creek 3, let’s keep focussed and remember what we
are playing for. GO CREEK!
