Delving Deeper
Here is what Reception will be looking at next week. If you could run
through this with your child in preparation, that would enable us to delve
even deeper into the learning and ensure your child has a head start!
This is not homework. Simply a quick chat with your child.
Please help us to get your child excited and invigorated about the learning
ahead. If you have any questions, we are here to help after school. Thank
you for supporting your child in this way. We have really noticed how
much you have been doing at home!
Week beginning 27th March 2017
Maths
Theme: Estimating
Task: Can you estimate how many sweets/toys are in a jar/bag/box?
Questions to ask: What does the word estimate mean? How many objects are inside the jar? How can
you check your estimate? Is that a sensible guess/estimate?
Reading (Please remember to read EVERY day and record it in the reading diary.)
Theme: Easter or other religious celebrations
Task: Can you learn the story of Easter or another religious celebration by reading a book or watching
this clip: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/stories/lets-celebrate-easterperformance
Questions to ask: Why do we celebrate Easter? Who is the main character in the Easter story? How is
Easter celebrated?
Phonics: In phonics we are continuing to learn phase 4. We are learning to read CCVCC words such as
‘truck’, ‘plant’ , drink’ and ‘crisp’. Can your encourage the children to hear ALL sounds in each word? Can
they practise writing these words?
High Frequency Words: Can the children read ‘Set 5’ words stuck in their homework books if they have
completed previous sets. These are: ‘was’, ‘my’, ‘you’, ‘they’. Can they then write sentences using these
words? For example, ‘I was with my friend’.
Writing and Communication and Language
Theme: Make up your own fairytale
Task: Can you think of your own fairy tale using characters (e.g. little pig, gingerbread man), a setting
(e.g. woods, beach), a problem (e.g. big bad wolf, alien) and a solution (e.g. hero saves the day) ?
Questions to ask: Who are the characters in the story? Where is your story going to take place? What
is the problem in your story? How is the problem resolved? Why did your story end this way?
Physical Development: Discuss with your child the ways they get hot or cold (e.g. warm weather,
exercise) and encourage them to think about the effects of the environment such as whether opening a
window helps everybody to be cooler. Think about other ways to cool down or warm up (e.g. putting on or
taking off a layer of clothing, exercising etc…).
Expressive Arts and Design: Can you make and decorate your very own Easter egg?
PSED: Can you discuss the importance of being honest? Why is it important not to
cover up the truth?
