HONORARY DEGREES
Caiphus Semenya and Letta Mbulu
DMus (honoris causa)
Caiphus Semenya and Letta Mbulu are South Africans with international careers and reputations as musicians.
Caiphus Semenya is an accomplished musical director and composer.. His early group (the Katzenjammer
Kids) led to a part in the legendary 1959 production of King Kong. In 1964, after a brief tour with the musical
Sponono, Caiphus decided to stay in America. He worked with other exiled artists such as Miriam Makeba
and formed a group with Hugh Masekela and Jonas Gwanga called the Union of South Africa. He has curated
the Montreux Jazz Festival and composed works performed by legends such as Cannonball Adderley, Harry
Belafonte, Herb Alpert, The Crusaders, Lou Rawls, Nina Simone and his own wife Letta Mbulu. He composed
the African music for Roots, (which won an Emmy) and The Color Purple, which earned an Oscar nomination
and a Grammy win.
Letta Mbulu has recorded more than 20 albums on renowned labels with highly-regarded producers. In 1960,
while still in her teens, Letta toured England with the musical King Kong after its successful two-year run in
South Africa. She returned to South Africa but soon after went into exile in the United States in 1965 and quickly
befriended such fellow South African exiles in New York City as Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela and Jonas
Gwangwa – all alumni of King Kong. Starting her US career as a protégée of Miriam Makeba, she went on to
perform with the greats in the field and is regarded by some as having the greatest voice of all the ‘songbirds’
of the era.
Caiphus Semenya and Letta Mbulu have through their musical achievement also served as unofficial ‘cultural
ambassadors’ for South Africa. Their long partnership and exemplary lives as role-models for a wide South
African community epitomise values on which to build stable communities: tolerance, dignity, respect,
accomplishment and the importance of family.

DEGREE OF DOCTOR
OF PHILOSOPHY
In Business Administration:
*John George Fay
Thesis Title: The role of market-based
incentives to promote low carbon
development in developing countries
John Fay has an MBA from Cornell
University’s
Johnson
School
of
Management, and BA History and Markets
and Management Certificate from Duke
University. He has been studying at UCT’s
Graduate School of Business since 2010.
During this time, he has also been working
as an international development consultant
throughout Africa.
John Fay’s thesis responds to
the vexing problem of climate change by
exploring ways to incentivise development
approaches with lower greenhouse gas
emissions in developing countries. The
thesis explores the relationship between
market-based incentives and the underlying
host country environment, including the
role of the state. The theoretical framework
is drawn from the literature regarding
market based environmental policy,
and explicitly links to the literature on
governance in areas of limited statehood.
Using a mixed method approach to develop
case studies of the clean development
mechanism and renewable energy
promotion, he finds that market based
incentives are highly dependent on levels
of statehood, overarching developmental
priorities and financing considerations.
The results show that a one-size-fits-all
approach is inadequate because of the host
country environment.

Emma Louise McKinney
Thesis Title: The experiences of people
with disabilities during their integration
and retention into employment in South
Africa
Emma McKinney has a BEd and MEd in
Specialised Education from the University
of the Witwatersrand. She provides
inclusive education lectures to students
at two universities and is involved in
numerous disability projects.
Emma
McKinney’s
thesis
reflects her important contribution and
experience in disability and the workplace,
an area where little research has been
done in the African context. Her research
improves understanding of the barriers to
employment and the workplace dynamics
relating to the integration and retention
people with disabilities in the open labour
market. Her work makes a valuable
contribution to labour market studies,
organisation behaviour and practically,
to human resource policies required
for effective recruitment, selection and
retention. Her in-depth, qualitative study
sheds new light on helping employers
understand how to integrate people with
disabilities into the workplace and in so
doing, how to effectively motivate and
retain them. Her research further provides
both public policy makers and employers
with deep insights into the processes and
dynamics needed to develop effective
managerial practice and avoid unfair
workplace discrimination.
