About the Directory Dear Family: We are excited that you and your family are part of, or interested in, the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program (OSP). One way we assist families in utilizing the program to its fullest potential is by helping you make informed decisions about schools. We have created the Participating Schools Directory to provide families with basic information on each participating private school. As you begin your search for a school, it is our hope that the directory will help you find the right one for your student(s). To help you get started, the directory contains: • Comprehensive school profiles on each participating school (Beginning on Page 9) • A step‐by‐step guide on how to apply to private schools (Pages 65 and 66) • General admission testing information (Page 69) • Information on other financial resources (Pages 70 and 71) Additionally, included in the directory are maps of OSP participating schools by zip code, schools listed by Ward, and a School Search worksheet to assist you in the school search process. The directory is a great starting point; however, it may not contain everything you need to know before applying to or choosing a school. We strongly encourage you to visit school websites, attend open houses and/or tours, and contact admissions staff to answer any additional questions you may have. You can also find a copy of this directory, along with more OSP program information, online at www.dcscholarships.org. Please note: The details contained in the school profile pages are self‐reported by each school in the fall. Admissions details pertain to the upcoming 2016‐17 school year. All other information, including tuition amounts, pertains to the current 2015‐16 school year. Be sure to check with the schools directly for the most up‐to‐date information. Tuition information for the upcoming school year typically is available beginning in the spring. As always, if you have any questions, please email [email protected] or call the Program Team at 1.888.DC.YOUTH (1.888.329.6884). Office walk‐in hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1pm to 4pm. Thank you. Sincerely, Rachel Sotsky Executive Director, Serving Our Children 5
School Profiles
Important Notes: The maximum scholarship amount offered by Serving Our Children is capped under federal law. Some schools have tuitions and/or fees above the maximum scholarship amount Serving Our Children is permitted to provide. However, many participating schools will offer supplemental support or assistance to OSP students. The current Opportunity Scholarship Program cap is $8,381 for Kindergarten through Eighth grades and $12,572 for Ninth through Twelfth grades. These amounts are subject to potential annual inflationary adjustments. For tuition, fees, and supplemental support, please inquire with each school for specific information related to: Additional fees above tuition (example: books, uniforms, etc.) Tuition discounts for siblings or religious affiliation Availability of waivers for application or testing fees Availability of supplemental financial aid or payment plans for fees above the scholarship award amount o School Year 2016‐17 tuition information (currently, only the School Year 2015‐16 tuition information is available. School Year 2016‐17 amounts are typically released by schools beginning in the Spring.) o

How to Apply to Private Schools Step1:ResearchParticipatingOSPSchools



Think about what you’re looking for in a school o Location ‐ Do you want a school near where you live or work? o Religion ‐ Do you want a religious or non‐religious school? o Activities ‐ What types of services and activities (i.e. aftercare, sports) do you want? Review the school’s website Contact the school for an application and schedule a time to visit o Attend open houses, tours, and shadow visits o Ask questions to get detailed information on the application process Step2:MarkYourCalendarforImportantDates

Examples: Application and financial aid deadlines, open houses, shadow visits, admissions decision notifications Step3:CompleteApplications



Follow directions thoroughly o Many schools have step‐by‐step directions to make the application process easier; ask schools if you have questions Submit any additional documents (essays, transcripts, and teacher recommendations, etc.) o Ask for letters of recommendation early (and from more than one person if required) o Ask for multiple transcript/grade copies from each school your student has attended Other important points o Many schools require admissions tests; inquire what test is needed for the school o Identify yourself as an OSP family; schools may waive or defer application fees, and many schools offer supplemental financial assistance o Ask if financial aid is available  Applying for financial aid does not lessen your chance of being accepted  Financial aid applications are usually included with the admissions packet. If not, ask for financial aid forms and deadline information Step4:EssaysandInterviews



Present your student’s strengths Have your student tell his/her unique story (for the student portion of the application, if required) Share the fact that your student is applying to or participating in the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program Step5:SubmittingApplications




Proofread your applications and attach all requested information before submitting After submitting, follow up with the school to make sure your application is complete While waiting for a decision, check in with the school from time‐to‐time to see if there is anything else they may need Admissions decision o Accepted students:  Schedule another visit if your child is accepted to more than one school  Ask about your financial aid award  Decide whether your student will be attending. If yes, give the school a signed School Placement Form o If you are not accepted, go back to step 1 to identify other school options 63

Common School Admission Tests High School Placement Test (HSPT) The high schools that are a part of the Archdiocese of Washington (ADW) require entering students to take the HSPT. Students already enrolled in a catholic school within the ADW do not need to register for the exam as they will take it at their current 8th grade school. For those students not already attending a catholic school within the ADW, they will need to register and pay for the exam. Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE): The ISEE is an admission test that has three levels: a lower level, middle level, and upper level. At all levels, the exam consists of three parts: (a) verbal and quantitative reasoning tests that measure a student's capability for learning, (b) reading comprehension and mathematics achievement tests that provide specific information about a student's strengths and weaknesses in those areas, and (c) an essay section. Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT): The SSAT is a multiple‐choice aptitude test for students in grades 5‐11. The test consists of verbal, quantitative (math) and reading comprehension sections. Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC): The test identifies key cognitive strengths and weaknesses related to learning disabilities, executive function, attention disorders, intellectual disability, cognitive strengths/weaknesses, and giftedness. Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence – Third Edition (WPPSI‐III): The WPPSI‐III is designed for children ages 2 years six months to 7 years 3 months and provides subtest and composite scores that represent verbal and performance cognitive ability. 66
