Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 16, 2016
PRAYING: YOUR WEAKNESS OR YOUR STRENGTH?
The fact is that either you are growing closer to the Lord or growing away
from the Lord. We live in a world where science lures us into believing that
we can understand, that we can know, that we can figure out the who, why
and what’s of our lives. Technology gives us a false sense of security and
control. Our egos, yes the mighty oh ego, is going full thrust in honor of self.
The temptation becomes to give up on the grace of God pretty quickly. Jesus
tells the parable of a determined widow who was pestering the heck out of a
crooked judge (Lk 18: 1-8). Now this parable comes right after an encounter
Jesus had with the Pharisees, who were getting a bit too comfortable in their
life and began questing God’s grace and fidelity. Jesus’ parable is insisting
that they should at least have the confidence of the determined widow and
“pray always without becoming weary” and God will “speedily” respond (Lk
18: 1).” Yes, in order that we do not get lured into giving up on the grace of
God, we are called to be a people of prayer. Not just a prayer here and
there. No, we are called to be constant in our prayer. We have to be constant in thanksgiving, constant in repentance, constant in praise, and constant in bringing to God every need that comes our way. Constancy in prayer
builds confidence and strength in God. Yes, constant prayer, a minute here,
a ½ hour there, every day, can help us to remain strong in our faith. A
strong prayer life can strengthen our weakness, educate our ignorance, and
protect us from temptation. Have you been looking for strength in the midst
of your weaknesses? Well, it’s time to turn to the grace of God and pray.

Catholics Care. Catholics
Vote. Practice civil dialogue.
In their statement on Forming
Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the U.S. Catholic bishops remind Catholics that we
are called to engage in charitable, respectful and civil dialogue during election season.
In a culture that is dominated by "partisan attacks,
sound bites and media hype," the Church calls for "a
different kind of political engagement" (no. 14). Visit
www.faithfulcitizenship.org to access resources on civil
dialogue and on how our faith calls us to engage during
election season and beyond.

The Young Apostles and Knights of Columbus generously have put up a field of

Stewardship Thought
Today’s theme is perseverance — Moses keeping his hands
upraised throughout the battle, Paul urging Timothy to stay
with the task of preaching and teaching, and the widow
appealing to the corrupt judge. To be faithful stewards of
God’s gifts, we, too, must persevere in the roles to which
we are called.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
October 16, 2016
Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Though Jesus told today’s parable
more than two thousand years ago, human
nature hasn’t changed: we recognize both
characters instantly. The merciless judge represents the corruption that has short-circuited
justice throughout history; the distraught widow, society’s perennially powerless, marginalized to what
Pope Francis calls the “peripheries” by those who wield
power but lack the mercy that could transfigure society
with compassion. To confront such reality, Jesus bids us,
“pray always without becoming weary” (Luke 18:1). Prayer
opens our eyes to see others from Jesus’ perspective, and
leads us to work for justice by coming to the aid of others
with what Pope Francis extols as a higher standard, mercy.
Thus, when Jesus asks, “Will not God secure the rights of
[God’s] chosen ones? Will [God] be slow to answer?” (18:7). We respond by making God’s liberating
work for others our own. “[W]hen the Son of Man comes,
will he find faith on earth?” (18:8). Yes, we respond—and
mercy!
