Great time at Kids Fish-n-Fun event
By Lynn Davis
 Congratulations to Tom
Zapp for winning the first
club tournament of 2012!
 Congratulations to Jim Hanrahan for Big Fish (20 lb
king)!
 New life-jacket kiosk is in
place at the Kenosha boat
launch
 KSFCA contributes to
world record life jacket
event!
The Kids Fish n Fun had
a great turnout this year.
120 Kids learned to fish,
went to mini seminars on
conservation, water
safety, Fly Tying, casting,
bait selection, and cleaning your catch. All the
kids were able to meet
with the game warden.
Many trout and perch
were caught. The participants were given information on planning an
inland fishing trip, an "I
fished" sticker and a Federation Coloring book.
Many KSFCA members
came out to assist with
one of the clubs biggest
events. It was great to see
long time members alongside the many
new members. After fishing all were treated to hot
dogs, chips and a
drink. There were smiles
galore.

Fly Fishing, the ultimate sport-fishing challenge
By Jack Springer
Fly fishing is probably the highest
form of sports fishing. The fly fisherman often deliberately underarms
himself. For instance, some tippet
material has diameters of 4/1,000 of
an inch, but can capture some much
heavier fish. The challenge is
matching the right rod, line, leader,
and tippet to catch the fish you desire.
By using the simplest of levers, the
fly rod, the trout fisherman will
take a hefty trout on tippets that
snap at one pound, and are caught
on flies smaller than a match head.
A one and one half ounce fly rod can
subdue a twenty pound salmon.
The salt water fly fisherman has
also witnessed the awesome bonefish peel out three-hundred feet of
line. The tarpon has also been
known to be caught on a fly rod
with its spectacular six to eight foot
leaps in the air. If you want to
tackle a sailfish or shark the option
is yours. The small bluegill or bass
can be just as much of a challenge
as any fish around. The world of fly
fishing is open to all these possibilities.
All of the waters of the world are fly
fishable. No water is restricted
from fly fishing. A brook, creek,
stream, river, pond, reservoir, or
lake---the salt water bay, estuary,
etc. and all of the oceans of the
world are open to fly fishing.
Test Question: Which fly rod is best
for you? What are your reasons for
that choice? Next month, choosing
the right fly rod!
What is gray has four legs, and a
trunk? Do you give up? How do you
make an elephant float? Answers
in next month’s Outrigger.
The Fly of the Month is the Pink
Squirrel. The fly recipe is in next
month’s Outrigger.
“Kids Don’t Float” kiosk in place, Life jacket world
record next?
As part of National Safe Boating
Week (May 19-25), The National
Safe Boating Council’s “Ready Set
Wear It” attempted to coordinate a
world record for most life jackets
worn simultaneously. During the
ribbon cutting ceremony for the
loaner life jacket kiosk, KSFCA
members and others participated in the world record attempt. For more information,

Bob’s Harborside Report
Fishing report for 4/16/12:
The big kings are still hanging around, and falling victim to
just about anyone who goes out for them. Andy Derwinski
caught several over 15 this morning. Hawkeye has been
doing that for most of the week. Even Hank Martenelli jr.
and Doc Nordstrom did well this morning. I weighed one for
Doc that was 16lbs. right on the nose. Best action has now
moved out to the hill. Most anglers are starting their
runs in about 100ft. of water. Mixed bags are now being
caught with lakers and rainbows rounding out the cooler.
Lake Michigan Angler
Report
Fishing report for 5/21/12:
Fishing out of Northpoint has been great. Before first light
kings in 40-60 ft of water on glow in the dark spoons. After sunrise 80 to 120 feet of water has been best. Lots of Coho from 130
-150 ft. White Hot Spot Flashers with white flies or Kingfisher
Flashers and meat rigs have been productive for kings along
with magnum spoons. Top spoons have been the new Moonshine RV Wonderbread and RV Flounder Pounder. The Stinger
UV Spoons PK Special and UV Dolphins have been great for
kings. The coho bite is still hot near the surface, Red 00 dodgers with black, blue and Purple flies.
