The Bay High School Science Club team placed
in the Final 8 at the national Chain Reaction
Contraption Contest held at the Carnegie Science
Center in Pittsburgh. There were 32 participating
high schools.
The contest challenge was to create a mechanical device (no electrical power) with 20 or more
steps leading to the erasure of an X. Our students
selected a pirate theme and the crossing/uncrossing of two swords.
"The students worked two-and-a-half months,
accruing 400 hours, on the mechanical project,"
said physics instructor and Science Club
advisor, Ann Mowery. "In addition to
Winter
physics and engineering skills, they
learned about team management and the
2008
use of power tools. This project truly is a
culmination of their talents, skills and
… and much more!
abilities as fostered through their earlier years in the
Bay Village Schools."
Fifteen students attended the contest in Pittsburgh,
but many more contributed to the mechanical marvel.
The four lead team members were Bay High junior
Tyler Cullinan, senior Jason Jones, senior Ashley
Stradtman and junior Dani Sheppa.
Alumnus Joseph Guinter (Bay High School 1987),
a Bay Village Schools parent and mechanical engineer, acted as the team's engineering mentor. Rhonda
and Cletus Schneider from True Value Hardware
sponsored the team and provided supplies, hardware
and team shirts.
Because the Bay High project finished in the top
eight, it was selected to be displayed at the headquarters of one of the contest's main sponsors,
Westinghouse Electric Company in Monroeville,
Pennsylvania, during Engineer's Week in February.
2008 Scholastic Art and Writing Award regional winners
The regional Scholastics Art competition is now
more competitive than ever, with teachers in
Cuyahoga County each being allowed to submit only
15 student works.
The following Bay Village Schools students had
their work selected out of about 1700 submissions to
receive an award. Artwork was created during the
2006-2007 school year.
Gold Key awards went to Bay High School
seniors Matt Essi (digital imagery and photography
portfolio), Laura Guerin (art portfolio), Arthur

honored at an opening reception on Sunday, January 13, in the Aitken Auditorium in CIA's
Reinberger Galleries.
The Scholastic Arts competition is a national
competition and has recognized the work of middle
and high school students since 1923.
Those who would like to honor Sherri may
contribute to the Sherri Deal Memorial Fund at Charter
One Bank, 411 Dover Center Road in Bay Village.
Sherri Deal, a sixth-grade language arts
and social studies teacher at Bay Middle
School, passed away in February due to
complications of an extended illness.
She was 42 years old.
Sherri worked for the Bay Village
Schools since 2000. She is survived by
Sherri Deal
her husband, Bill, and daughter, Cara, a
fifth-grader, as well as a stepson, Nicholas Nix.
Counselors were on hand for students and staff to help
them deal with their loss.
Sherri was known as an extremely positive and
dedicated teacher who showed great compassion and
patience with her students.
“As a social studies and language arts teacher, her
knowledge of content was outstanding,” said Bay
Middle School principal, Sean McAndrews. “But more
important, she was able to reach kids on their level. As a
chess club advisor and through other activities, she
connected with our students. She made learning fun. She
will be greatly missed by us all.”

“Fields of Dreams” Needs Your Help!
Use the envelope enclosed in this newsletter to return your order form or donate to the campaign.
First-Fourth Key
Chain Company
will donate a brick
Dear Bay Village Residents,
The Fields of Dreams Campaign is an
aggressive campaign to raise $2.1 million for
the renovation of Bay High’s Memorial
Stadium with a state of the art micro filament
synthetic turf for our football, soccer and lacrosse teams, and marching band,
in addition to resurfaced and refurbished track facilities. Our project also includes
dramatic improvements to our north campus. The improvements involve a
complete renovation of our practice fields plus construction of new baseball and
softball fields. The goal is to bring desperately needed improvements to our
athletic facilities without a bond issue.
This year’s Normandy and Westerly
Elementary students involved in the
First-Fourth Key Chain Company
will use their profits to donate a
brick on the Memorial Walkway to
the renovated Bay High Memorial
Stadium.
“Our students will be able to look
at that brick with their company’s
name on it for all the years they go
to events at the stadium,” said
fourth-grade teacher Barb
Woodburn. Woodburn has taught the
program with first-grade teacher,
Nancy Glinka, for many years.
The annual project has first- and
fourth-grade buddies learn about
manufacturing and marketing, costs
of goods and labor, and many other
principles of economics as they form
a company, produce unique, beaded
key chains, and sell their product.
They traditionally donate a gift for a
school or the district.
The First-Fourth Key Chain
Company was presented with the
Samuel H. Elliott award for Leadership in Economic Education by the
Harvard Business School Club of
Northeast Ohio, as well as an
award from Key Bank, in 2004.
We are happy to share that we have raised nearly $700,000 to date and are
within $288,000 of paying for the Memorial Stadium Improvements (Artificial
Turf, New Beautiful Entrance, Memorial Walkway, Track and Field
Improvements). Our sincere thanks to those who have given so generously to
help us reach this point. We plan on completing our fundraising by summer of
2009 for the entire project. The additional improvements to the north campus will
hopefully be ready for the 2010 school year. With your help, we can reach our
goal and make this dream a reality!
How can you help? Please consider one or more of the following options.
DONATE A BRICK! Our brick campaign offers levels of giving at $250, $500
and $1,000. Leave a lasting memory of your business or family name. The brick
garden will be installed at the West Gate of the stadium in the summer of 2008.
The new May 1st deadline will insure a timely installation (to order, fill out the
form at the right and use the provided envelope). Please contact Laura Geuther at
899-9191 or [email protected] with questions concerning bricks!
Donate to Our Campaign! All donations are tax deductible. All money goes
directly to the “Fields of Dreams” Campaign and will be used for the renovation of
our fields! An envelope with a donation flap is enclosed! Checks should be made
out to the Bay Rockets Association (again, feel free to use the provided envelope).
Please contact Barb Harrell at 871-8988 or [email protected] with questions
concerning the entire campaign!
Participate in our Corporate Campaign! As an individual or as a corporation,
we ask you to consider a leadership donation. Please contact Robert Jackson at
250-6873 or [email protected] with questions concerning the corporate
campaign!
Thank you for considering this opportunity to make a lasting contribution
to the athletic future of the youth, adding further value and a sense of pride in
our beautiful city! The present and future students and families of Bay Village
thank you in advance for your participation.
Sincerely,
Barb Harrell, Chairman

HEARTS is a Bay Middle School leadership group of seventh- and eighth-grade girls. The acronym stands for
Helping Each Achieve Responsibility to Succeed.
HEARTS created a number of Go Red activities to raise awareness about the number one killer of women, heart
disease. For National Wear Red for Women's Day, the girls researched and wrote daily heart health facts for
morning announcements, hung a large poster asking for support of the cause, and created packets of information
and heart healthy recipes for each Bay Middle School staff member. Family and Consumer Sciences instructor,
Denise Suba, prepared a heart healthy recipe for 6th graders to prepare and a heart healthy lunch for the 8th grade
students to prepare and share. Suba also made and donated a beautiful Vera Bradley style bag that was raffled to
raise funds for the Heart Association.
A Memorial Wall was also created for students and staff to honor loved ones who experienced heart disease.
HEARTS advisors are Bay Middle School Guidance Counselors Jan Machinski and Mary Urbansky.
The Village Foundation of Bay Village
donates scholarship plaque at Bay High
Village Foundation trustee Harry Huhndorff and his wife, Karen, recently donated
a beautifully-designed plaque to Bay High School to commemorate those students
honored with Village Foundation scholarships.
The Village Foundation also offers students experiences serving as voting
trustees. This year, those trustees are Carol Fox, Jeff Graham and Megan O’Brien.
The Foundation is currently accepting scholarship applications and grant
proposals (due April 1) for community projects. Also by April 1, individuals may
purchase an engraved bronze plaque to honor someone special. Plaques (which
cost $2,500) are installed on the footbridge in Cahoon Memorial Park.
