CAMPER BLUE
RIBBON AWARD
Bailey Liebelt is the winner of our Blue Ribbon Camper Award. Bailey is a
golden retriever mix adopted by his parents Kerstin and Uwe Liebelt. He was
adopted from The Char Meck Animal Control in August of 2008. Bailey’s mom
says that Bailey picked them by refusing to be ignored. Bailey is a born retriever
as Baileys favorite thing to do is to swim in the pool and he tries to rescue/retrieve
anyone else that happens to jump in. Bailey also like to hide rawhide bones and
prefers to let them "age" and eat them a few days later. Bailey has lots of friends
at Camp Bark, canine and human. Bailey like to come to daycamp when his mom
is busy volunteering. Bailey inspired his Mom to try and help other dogs like him
and Kerstin now volunteers at the Char Meck Animal Control… how cool is
that! Bailey is one Lucky dog and might pursue a career as an motivational
speaker. He has certainly inspired us and captured our hearts!
The current economic conditions have hit nonprofits extremely hard. We are trying to do our
part by hosting our Third Annual Toys for M utts Drive. We are collecting toys and pet supplies for needy pets in shelters and within rescue organizations in our community. You can
drop off dog and cat supplies at Camp Bark for their Toys For M utts Drive. Even shelter and
rescue pets should have presents from Santa Paws on Christmas morning that are in. If you can
help in anyway, all donations are appreciated.

Rescue Pet's Christmas Poem
'T is the night before Christmas and all through the town,
Every shelter is full - we are lost but not found,
Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
We hope every minute that someone will care,
T hey'll come to adopt us and give us the call,
"Come here, Max and Sparkie - come fetch your new ball!!"
But now we sit here and think of the days
We were treated so fondly - we had cute, baby ways.
Now we're no longer young and we're no longer new.
So out the back door we were thrown like the trash,
T hey reacted so quickly - why were they so rash?
We "jump on the children"; "don't come when they call";
We "bark when they leave us"; climb over the wall.
We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed,
Now we suffer the consequence of the errors T HEY made.
If only they'd trained us, if only we knew,
We'd have done what they asked us and worshiped them, too.
We were left in the backyard, or worse - left to roam,
Now we're tired and lonely and out of a home.
T hey dropped us off here and they kissed us good-bye,
"Maybe someone else will give you a try."
So now here we are, all confuse d and alone,
In a shelter with others who long for a home.
T he kind workers come through with a meal and a pat,
With so many to care for, they can't stay to chat,
T hey move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer,
We know that they wonder how long we'll be here.
We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads,
Of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds.
T hen we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears,
Our friends filled with emptiness, worry, and fear.
If you can't adopt us and there's no room at the inn,
Could you help with the bills and fill our food bin?
We count on your kindness each day of the year,
Can you give more than hope to everyone here?
Please make a donation to pay for the heat
And help get us something special to eat.
T he shelter that cares for us wants us to live,
And more of us will, if more people will give.

Hi! My name is Stella Luna and I am looking for a home to call my
own. I was found wandering the streets at 6 months of age with a head
injury, but I'm all better now. I have scars on my head that make me a
little self conscious. Due to my head injury and scar tissue, I may never
have hair on my head like most dogs which is a hard thing to get past if
you are a girl. My foster mom tells me I am pretty in spite of my scars,
and I am starting to believe her. I am one year old, totally healthy and
other than the scar tissue I'm absolutely fine.. I am looking for a home
in the Charlotte area. I like all other dogs. I am housebroken and have
good house manners. The vet thinks I am a shepherd boxer mix and I
weigh about 50 lbs and I'm done growing. I do better with older kids as
the little ones sometimes frighten me. I ride great in the car and I'm always up for a road trip. I can be a little shy with strangers but once I
know you I'm your best buddy. I would be a great running partner or a
great couch potato, I take my cues from you. Can you look past my
scars and adopt me? I promise I wont let you down, and if you have
scars, I promise I won't even notice. I look past the superficial and I can
see your heart.
Oliver here, I am just a plain black dog so people do not notice me.
But since I am the perfect color - black - I am not sure why. I go with
every outfit (black goes with everything), I am perfect for every season (I snuggle in winter and enjoy the sunshine in summer), I am very
slimming (I love to go for walks so I can help with anyone's figure), I
am the perfect accessory (people love to talk to people with a dog).
Please consider me because I am perfect. I am housetrained, I love
other dogs, I am the sweetest boy. If you love black and would like to
meet me please send an email to my foster mom at Camp Bark.

Hi! My name is Vanna White. I am a beautiful, blonde, 7 year old Purebred lab. I lost my home due to the economic situation. I love food and I
tend to be an emotional eater at times so I'm trying not to let the fact that I
lost my family get me down. I am housebroken, good with all peeps, big
or little. I like other dogs and cats would probably be fine too, though I
never lived with a cat before. I know basic commands and I am a very
smart girl. I love a car rides and basically just being by your side. I love
watching T V and guess what my favorite show is? Yep, you guessed it
Wheel of Fortune (Shh! Don't tell Bob Barker) An ideal home for me
would be a mature home where someone just wants a best friend. I'd love
to sit by your side and watch gameshows. I still love to retrieve and play a
little but I am pretty calm most of the time.
CAMP BARK Goes GREEN
Camp Bark has always tried to be a friend to the
environment and we are always looking for ways to
improve our camp for all “dogkind”. In an effort to
become greener, literally… we chose to professionally install astroturf in our dog play yards. We
couldn't be happier with our choice. In an effort to
be as environmentally conscious as possible, we
also chose to purchase recycled turf from the University of Maine. Extra holes were added for drainage and the underneath prepped specifically for our
application for dogs. Not only is the turf beautiful,
but the dogs LOVE it! We have also added more
play equipment and maybe we are crazy but the
dogs seem to run even faster… now we know the
secret to all those super fast Pro football players.
(Shh… Don't tell Peyton Manning but its the
turf!) The turf eliminates any need for spraying
any lawn pesticides, and also eliminates the need
for cutting, watering, and its super clean and easy
to maintain. The dogs are happy, we are thrilled,
and we think camper parents will be pleased with
cleaner dogs at pick up time.

Holiday Dangers

Food for thought. Your dog may beg for it, but you should never feed your pet bones from the Thanksgiving turkey! T he small bones can splinter and leave shards lodged in your
pet's throat, intestines or stomach, potentially causing choking or blockages requiring surgery.
Trash can woes. Be sure the trash can lid is on tight, and do not give
your pet any leftovers. Greasy foods can cause severe stomach problems
in pets. Offering your dog human food can give him an upset stomach,
even if it's just one meal. Keep your dog on his regular food. Other
no-nos: Onions in holiday stuffing, which can lead to canine anemia, and
grapes and raisin toxins, which can cause kidney failure in pets.
Keep away from holiday treats. Chocolate can be toxic to pets: the
higher the cocoa content, the more dangerous it is. Keep candy wrappers
and aluminum foil away from your pet, as they could get stuck in their
throat.
Keep an eye on Fido. Keep your pet inside and when opening the door
for your guests, watch your dog closely so he doesn't pull a fast one on
you and escape. Your pets should have current identification on them -or better yet, make sure your dog has a microchip.
Set up a "safe room." Guests can be stressful on pets. Give your dog a
quiet place of his own with food, water, and his favorite toys and bed.
This will give your pet a place to relax in case your holiday celebration
gets to be overwhelming. Make sure to take a few minutes to hang out with your dog and give him some
love so he doesn't feel left out.
Mistletoe. Because there are several types of mistletoe, it is difficult to predict the clinical signs of poisoning with this popular holiday trimming. Some mistletoe species produce only gastrointestinal upset while
others may lead to liver failure or seizures. Consider mistletoe to be a hazardous substance and keep it out
of reach of pets and children.
Cooking. Keep pets out of the kitchen during the hustle and bustle of the season. The last thing you want is
for someone you love to get underfoot and get burned from accidental spillage. Try keeping them in an upstairs room or block off the kitchen with a gate.
Dietary indiscretion. We all like to include our pets in holiday meals along with the rest of the family, but
try to keep in mind that sudden rich diet changes are likely to upset a pet's stomach. Vomiting and diarrhea
are not uncommon medical complaints we see from T hanksgiving to New Year's Day. If leftovers are of an
especially fatty nature, the pancreas may become inflamed and overloaded. T his serious condition is known
as pancreatitis and usually requires hospitalization and intensive medical treatment.
Ribbons and tinsel. T hese are of special interest to playful cats and kittens that see these materials as toys
that need to be chased, pounced upon, chewed or swallowed. While chasing and pouncing are healthy
physical activities for cats, chewing and swallowing ribbons can be harmful. T hese strings or "linear foreign bodies" can become stuck in the intestinal tract, leading to bunching of intestine as the body tries unsuccessfully to pass the string or ribbon. This is a life-threatening condition requiring surgery for correction. Supervise animals that play with any string closely.
Electric light cords. These are also tempting to cats who like to play with string, as well as young puppies
that are teething and interested in chewing anything and everything. If a pet bites through an electrical cord,
it could result in a severe burn to the tongue or even damage the lungs, causing respiratory distress. This is
also an emergency requiring immediate veterinary attention.

CAMPERS WE’LL MISS
Unfortunately we as Pet Owners have to face the harsh reality that one day we will have to
say goodbye to our beloved companions. Camp Bark was deeply saddened to learn of the loss
of some of our favorite campers. This newsletter is dedicated to the memory of Fletcher
Flores-Bentley, Oreo Tighe, Sierra Geber, Sam Keeling, Jordan Zillmer, Chewbacca Rose, and
Bruiser Forrest. We look forward to the day we can see their sweet faces again…
Camp Bark Staff
There is an old Indian legend
which says when a human dies
there is a bridge they must
cross to enter into heaven. At
the head of that bridge waits
every animal that human encountered during their lifetime. The animals, based upon
what they know of this person,
decide which humans may cross
the bridge.... and which are
turned away.
