Nowhere to live
FirstNews ISSUE 331 12 - 18 OCT 2012
GORILLAS, chimpanzees and other great apes are running out of places to
live, according to scientists.
A survey of Africa has shown that the number of places suitable for apes to live has declined
drastically since 1990.
The survey is the first of its kind and the results have been published in the journal Diversity
and Distributions.
Great apes are already under threat in the wild from poachers and this just shows how
serious loss of habitat is.
The scientists spent years collecting data from over 15,000 sites where apes have been
recorded in the past.
Scared of the moon?
ARE bats scared of the moon? That is a question
scientists in Mexico are trying to answer.
Their research appears to show that lots of bats
prefer to stick to the shadows and hide from the
moonlight.
Data on bat behaviour was collected from all over
the world to check for “lunar phobia”. Their findings
suggest that bat activity drops on nights when the
moon is bright, but only for bats that live in areas lit by
moonlight, rather than those that live in darker, more
sheltered areas.
Experts think this may be linked to the fear of being
seen by predators!
