STEWARDSHIP...TIME, TALENT & TREASURE
(This month’s article is an open letter from a parishioner at St.
John the Evangelist Catholic Parish, Evansville, IN, a Stewardship
Parish to other parishioners)
Dear Parishioners,
The Baltimore Catechism poses the question “Why did God
create us? Simply put, the answer is to know, to love and to serve
God so that ultimately we may be with Him in heaven. The goal we
seek during our time on earth is eternal life with God in heaven.
This journey of faith begins at our baptism and is fulfilled through
our life of faithful discipleship.
With knowledge of God’s plan for us, and the love he shares
with us, we are called to follow the example of Christ by seeking
not to be served but to serve. As faithful stewards of Christ’s
mission, we do not wait to be asked; rather we look for ways in
which we can serve the Lord. When stewardship becomes a way of
life, our lives are directed toward God in heaven.
As we keep our commitment to the Stewardship way of life,
may each of us respond generously with our time, our talent, and
our treasure and continue to always know, love and serve the Lord.
Parishioner
Once again, thanks to all parishioners for your support and
generosity in our Parish “Stewardship in Faith” program; please
remember your commitment to Time, Talent and Treasure. “Time,
Talent, and Treasure,” will help you identify your unique gifts that
will enable you to best serve the Church and the Lord.
DID YOU KNOW%?
†
We started the budgeting process for the next fiscal year
(2011-2012) which begins Sept. 1, 2011. One of the most
important factors affecting our budget is the recent price quote
of the health insurance costs for our employees for the next
year. We are facing a 19% increase in premiums for the single
and “two person” coverage while the family coverage went up
24% according to our broker of record who helps procure good
health insurance for our employees. Additionally, on the
revenue side, Christmas and the Solemnity of Mary this year
fall on a Saturday which will have an adverse impact on our
weekend collections for the fiscal year.
Nativity News
Nativity Cemetery officially opened on Mother’s Day and will
be open daily until October 15, 2011. The manager of our
cemetery asks that flower pots should be 8 to 12” in diameter
and that no artificial flowers be used. Other guidelines are
posted on the signs at the entrances of the cemetery.
We received a final approval to do partial repairs in the rectory
which includes replacing some of the windows on the west
side of the rectory at a cost of $26,000.00. Donations are
coming in for this project. Because of multiple and growing
cracks in the foyer ceiling and outlandish energy costs, we
need to proceed. We anticipate serious savings in fuel/energy
bills over many years. A contract was also signed to seal the
parking lots, add more handicap parking and remove part of
the curb of the church parking lot facing South Buffalo Street.
We are reviewing the sanctuary lighting, railings and carpet
and should have some of our questions resolved in the near
future. There was no further investigative work done on the
other projects but they still remain on Nativity’s Wish List for
independent donors. If there are any parishioners who would
like to donate to these projects in part or whole, anonymously
or if you would like to do it in someone’s name, please see Fr.
Nowak or the Business Manager, Bob Joslyn. If there are
parishioners who have businesses that would like to bid on
these projects please contact Bob Joslyn 662-9339 ext. #125.
HELP US CONNECT THE WORLD
WITH GOD’S WORD!
If Jesus Christ were on earth today, how would he spread his
message? The Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) believes
Jesus would use every means available, so it makes use of media
outlets to evangelize and promote gospel values. You can truly
make a difference right here in our diocese through your donation
to the collection which will be taken up June 11/12. Half of all
funds collected in our diocese are used for local communications
projects such as our diocesan newspaper and televised Mass for
homebound persons. For more information about Catholic
Communication Campaign’s national communications projects,
please visit www.CatholicCommunicationCampaign.org.

OUTREACH
ENGAGED COUPLES
Family Promise Volunteer Opportunity: Nativity parishioners work
with members of other local churches in caring for families who
are temporarily homeless, a few times a year. These families are
given shelter at the Presbyterian Church overnight. Presently we
have enough volunteers who provide a meal but we are asking for
one or two men to take a turn at staying overnight once or twice a
year. You have your own room area. For more information please
contact Sister Beth.
The Diocese of Buffalo requires all engaged couples to
participate in a marriage preparation program approximately six
months prior to your wedding date. You can attend a one day
program available to you at Nativity of Our Lord Parish. The
following Saturday dates for 2011 are available: August 27th and
October 15th. Please call the parish office at 662-9339 to register.
Prayer Shawls: We would like to organize a group of women who
would enjoy coming together once or twice a month to knit or
crochet prayer shawls for the sick. In the past some women have
done this on their own time but now we would like to set aside two
hours some evening here in the parish to do this. It would also lend
itself to a nice social time while performing this ministry. We
accept knitters with all kinds of expertise. This ministry has been in
existence through the Outreach department and to date we have
given 210 prayer shawls. Those receiving shawls are in our
ongoing prayers. We have 6 prayer shawls on hand if you would
like one. Please contact Sister Beth if interested.
Handy Man: Sister Beth has the name of a man who is willing to
do small jobs for a parishioner who needs a “handyman” job done
in the home. Call the Outreach Office at 662-1302.
Homebound: Please call the Outreach office if you know of any
homebound parishioners who would appreciate having the
Eucharist brought to them.
Dear Parishioners:
I’m ever so grateful and thankful for all the support everyone
has given me since my car accident. Your prayers for my recovery,
all the cards and your wonderful hand written messages, have
brightened my days, lifted my spirit and brought the gifts of love
and hope. This has been a spiritual time; an experience of church
and community!!
May God Bless you, each & everyone—Dorothy Robinson
NATIVITY’S FAMILY MASS

break for the summer vacation and resume on September 11th.
Please contact Gayle Colpoys at 539-5754 to join our committee

Host Family, Young Reader or Collector.
DISCIPLES OF DIVINE MERCY
Disciples of Divine Mercy will come and pray the Chaplet of
Divine Mercy for your loved one who may be sick or dying. For

Join the Buffalo Philharmonic
Orchestra conducted by JoAnn Falletta in a
performance of Verdi’s Requiem on June
4th and 5th. Verdi’s Requiem is a musical
setting of the Funeral Mass set for orchestra
and double choir. The beautiful melodious,
dramatic and well crafted piece uses
historic texts from the Roman Catholic liturgy. This performance
will feature the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus in what will surely be
an unforgettable concert. A special 20% discount is available for all
parishioners in Western New York from the Diocese of Buffalo.

CONGRATULATIONS
The Greater Niagara Frontier Council of the Boy Scouts of
America proudly recognizes Michael James Raab. Michael, a 2008
alumnus of Nativity School and presently a junior at Canisius High
School, has distinguished himself by attaining the rank of Eagle
Scout. The Eagle rank represents only about 2% of all young men
in scouting. This is awarded to young men who demonstrate
leadership, strength of character, commitment to excellence,
service to community, and for exemplifying the ideals of the Boy
Scout Oath and Law.
For the leadership service project, Michael designed the
woodworking plans and organized the construction and staining of
25 wooden bedside “cubbie” units for the newly built cabin at
Cradle Beach Camp in Angola. Groups of disadvantaged/disabled
children, participating in various encampment programs offered at
Cradle Beach, have utilized the bedside furniture. The project has
been a tremendous asset for the facility.
Michael is a member of Boy Scout Troop 400. He was
decorated at his Eagle Scout Court of Honor on April 10th. The
parish community congratulates Michael on this outstanding
achievement!

The Nativity of Our Lord School Advisory Board has begun
the Strategic Planning process to develop and implement a plan for
the future of Nativity of Our Lord School.
The first step in the process is the formation of the Steering
Committee to oversee this mission. At this point, parent and
teacher representatives have been chosen by the Board to
participate on the Committee, but we are in need of parent
parishioners who do not have their children enrolled at Nativity
School. Non-school parent parishioners provide a unique
perspective which will aide the committee in its decision making.
We hope you would consider this ministry within our church
community and would encourage you to contact either of us
immediately should you wish to become a member of the Strategic
Planning Committee.
We look forward to working together to develop and
implement our plan and approach our vision of becoming a thriving
catholic elementary school in the Diocese of Buffalo. For more
information contact Cheryl McFadden Zak at [email protected] or
Michelle Brydalski at [email protected].
8TH GRADE SERVICE PROJECT
Congratulations to Nativity’s 8th grade class for completing
their Class Service Project at Saving Wild Horses in West Falls and
to Caroline and Cassidy Colpoys who organized the event to earn
their Girl Scout Silver Award. The class helped set up and run a
carnival themed event for almost 70 people including 20
disadvantaged kids from the social services organizations, Conners
Kids and Cornerstone Manor. Each student buddied up with a
young “guest” acting as a mentor while providing friendship and
companionship to the kids. Not only did the class facilitate the
games, crafts and lunch which entertained them, they did so with
enthusiasm, respect and empathy.
Special thanks to Mrs. DiFrancesco’s 6th grade Girl Scout
Troop 471 who organized the crafts section of the carnival as part
of earning their Girl Scout Bronze Award. Their maturity and
enthusiasm far exceeded their young age.
We are all proud of the class of 2011!
NATIVITY SCHOOL ADVISORY BOARD

FIRST EUCHARIST
Faith & Family Days
GAME NIGHTS
We’re rockin’ out the summer schedule! To start things off,
we’ve got our Game Night on Mondays at St. Bernadette’s back
field, from 6:30-8:00 pm. Frisbee, kickball, baseball, football and
more. Come on out and have some fun, and keep an eye on our
weekly e-mail for any changes, like bon fires.
PRAYER & PRAISE NIGHTS
On Wednesday, we have Prayer & Praise Nights from 7:009:00pm in the Antioch Room. Worship music, scripture reading,
rosary praying etc. Each week will be slightly different from the
last, but they all will have two things in common—Prayer & Praise.
ALT FAMILY PICNIC
In continuing with last years new/old tradition, we will be
having our Life Teen/EDGE Family Picnic on Sunday, June 5th.
First we’ll celebrate 11:00 Mass at St. Bernadette’s, then proceed
to the pavilion for some food and fun in the sun (that is, if the sun
decides to show up this time). ALT will be providing burgers and
dogs, drinks and some fun picnic type games. Feel free to bring a
dish to pass and whatever else to be in the picnic spirit!
CHICKEN ‘N RIB BBQ
Our annual Chicken ‘N Rib BBQ fundraiser will be Saturday,
June 18th. BW’s will be grilling on the lawn from 4:00-7:00pm,
with eat in and take out options available. Our teens will be selling
tickets beforehand, but we always order extra so walk-ins
welcome! All proceeds go to Life Teen and the teens who help
work it. Come support Life Teen while eating a delicious BBQ.
This past month, First Eucharist families chose April 3, 9 or
10th for a day of prayer, reflection, and refreshments. During these
gatherings, candidates for First Eucharist anticipated entering more
deeply into their personal union with Christ, receiving Him in the
Eucharist, and joining more completely the Body of Christ by
reviewing the teaching of His real presence in the Eucharist, and
reflecting on what their prayers and thoughts might be before and
after receiving our Holy Communion.
While the children were preparing, parents enjoyed a Bible
study session. They considered the foreshadowing of the Eucharist
in the Old Testament requirement to consume the sacrifice, and
then reflected on readings referring to the Eucharist in the New
Testament. The road to Emmaus was especially highlighted. We
recalled that it was after the resurrection, on that first Sunday
evening, Jesus revealed himself. First by “...beginning with Moses
and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in
all the Scriptures”, (Lk.24; 27), and then “...while he was with them
at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to
them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized
him…” (Lk. 24; 30-31). So it is at our Sunday celebrations, Christ
reveals himself in the Scriptures, and then reveals himself in the
Breaking of the Bread. Scripture study for the day was ended by
listening to the Bread of Life Discourse, (John 6:22-58), where
Jesus eliminates any metaphorical possibilities, and clearly
proclaims “I am the Living Bread that came down from heaven;
whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will
give is my flesh for the life of the world.” (Jn. 6:51)
Our day was completed by sharing in potluck refreshments,
amid a roomful of joyful children. We thank God for all our
Communicants and their families for bringing their children to the
table of the Lord. Let us continue to pray for each other.
KINGDOM BOUND
The four day Christian concert/festival held at Darien Lake
will be July 31st-August 3rd. We’re joining up with Queen of
Heaven and SS Peter & Paul. The cost is $200.00 and we have a

attending, check our website antiochlifeteen.org for more info and
