When choosing the name for this exciting new
development, the developers’ looked to the local
history of the area. The land near Lake Gwelup was
first granted to a settler named Thomas Mews in
1831 (when the fledgling colony was just 2 years old).
Born in 1795, Thomas William Mews was originally
a shipbuilder from Hampshire, England.
Thomas Mews was a ship builder from England. He was the first
person to receive a land grant in the Gwelup area (in 1831).
He arrived in the Swan River colony in 1830.
Accompanied by his wife Mary and their 4
children, they originally settled in Mt Eliza
near the Old Swan Brewery.
When they arrived, he boasted a horse,
livestock, tools of trade, food and household
furniture. The total valuation of these items
was £450 7s 2½d and this entitled him to a
sizable land allocation, including the land we
now call Thomas Mews Lakes Estate.
