Aloha mai kākou,
Good news!!!!! Our
`Aha`aina will once again be held
at the Costa Mesa Community
Center on Saturday, August 15th.
Mahalo to Paddy Kakihara for her
perseverance in contacting the City
of Costa Mesa monthly to check on
the availability of the Center. There
are plans to convert the Center to a
library, but now not until after
August. Mahalo to all of you who
scouted and called numerous
places to find a new venue for our
lu`au. Keep your contacts as we
may need to call them again for
next year.
Several members of
`Āinahau attended Kūlia I ka Pūnāwai’s, (Kumu Hula Association of
Southern California) performance
of Kaulana Na Pua under the direction of Ku`uleialoha Amy Stillman
from the University of Michigan.
The performance by fifteen hālau
was a declaration of love for the
`aina and loyalty to Queen
Lili`uokalani. In 1998, Ku`ulei Stillman gifted `Āinahau with the oli Eia
Kaleponi, which we continue to
chant each year at the opening of
our `Aha`aina.

Message from the Editor
Maggie Perry
This month, we celebrate the birth of
our founder, Prince Jonah Kūhiō
Kalaniana`ole Pi`ikoi, who was born on
March 26, 1871. Prince Kuhio Day is an
official holiday in Hawai`i. It is celebrated
annually on March 26th, to mark the birth of
the Prince, heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Hawai`i, Prince of the House of
Kalākaua, and later territorial delegate to
the United States Congress. As Delegate,
Kūhiō authored the first Hawai`i Statehood
Bill in 1919. In 1921, he won passage of
the Hawaiian Homes Act, creating the Hawaiian Homes Commission and setting
aside 200,000 acres of land for Hawaiian
homesteaders. It is one of only two holidays in the United States dedicated to royalty, the other being Hawai`i’s King Kamehameha Day on June 11th.
Aloha mai kākou 'Āinahau Ohana,
Mahalo for the contributors in this newsletter. As you can see our representatives keep
a very busy schedule from the articles shared
by Ka’ala and Charlene!! I had the pleasure of
attending the Nā Lei Makalapua Meeting February 14, 2015 in Henderson and shared
those pictures separately. It was great to see
the delegates in action. Our member Charles
Herring and his staff did an awesome job with
the catering. I will insert some pictures with this
newsletter. Also in honor of Prince Kuhio, I
have inserted an article previously shared in
2013 newsletter.
Exciting news! Brian Bennett, an intern
from CA State University, Fullerton will be working on our website. I will be
sharing past and future newsletters and pictures to him.
Looking forward to learning
from Brian in bringing
'Āinahau up to date in the
website world! We have been lagging. I will
share updates and progress as it becomes
available. Mahalo Brian!! *Pictured: Annelle
We are proud of Prince Kūhiō, what
he did for the Hawaiian people and for
founding the Hawaiian Civic Club, which we
are honored to be a part of.

Prince Jonah Kuhio
Ka-lani-ana-`ole
He then returned home and on March 4, 1903,
became the elected Republican
delegate to the U.S. Congress.
Also in 1903, he reorganized the Royal
Order of Kamehameha and was the founder of
the first Hawaiian Civic Club.
In 1919, Kuhio sponsored a bill calling for
Hawaiian statehood, a full forty years
before it became a reality. In 1921, Kuhio stirred
the emotions of Congress as he spoke of the decline of his people who numbered fewer than
24,000 in the 1920 census, believed to be about
10% of the former Native Hawaiian population. In 1921, President Harding signed the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act. Despite Kuhio’s
wishes, the Act contained high blood quantum
requirements and leased the land instead of
granting fee simple, making it a perpetual government institution. He served on the first
Hawaiian Homes Commission starting on
September 16, 1921.
Prince Kuhio died in Honolulu in 1922 at
the age of fifty. He was given a state
funeral befitting an ali`i (king). After a week of
mourning, he was buried at Mauna ‘Ala, the
Royal Mausoleum in Nu`u-anu, O‘ahu.
Truly a son of the islands, he dedicated his
life to the future well-being of
his people. He was also instrumental in launching international Hawaiian canoe racing,
commissioning the construction of the first
racing-purpose built outrigger canoe in 1906
by Kahuna Kalaiwa‘a Moku‘ohai (master canoe
builder in Kona). Kuhio's canoe won championship races consecutively from 1907 through
1910. Many consider Kuhio the father of
Hawaii canoe racing as an internationallyrecognized sport.
The royal union of Queen Kapi`o-lani’s sister, Esther
Kino`iki Ke-kaulike and
David Ka-hale-pouli Pi`ikoi
produced three sons, Edward
Keli`i-a-honui, who
died in his teens, David Kawanana-koa and Jonah
Kuhio Ka-lani-ana-`ole.
While not too much is known
of their father’s lineage (he died in 1880), their
mother’s royal lineage is well known and respected. Jonah, later known as Prince Kuhio,
was born on Kaua`i's south shore near Po`ipu
Beach on March 26, 1872. His birthday is celebrated as a Hawai`i state holiday.
Brothers Jonah and David were adopted
into the childless royal family and titled princes
for life by David Ka-la-kaua. They were ali`i by
right of descent from their great-grandfather
Kaua`i’s King Ka-umu-ali`i. Ka-wanana-koa
and Ka-lani-ana-`ole were the crown bearers at
the coronation of Ka-la-kaua. The two young ali`i
participated in many of the royal events, as
Ka-la-kaua was grooming them for their future.
Prince Jonah Kuhio Ka-lani-ana-`ole was a
cultural hybrid. Hawaiian in appearance, name
and loyalties, his overall attitude was a make-up
of his education. He was primarily educated in
California and England, and spent a year in Japan. Ka-la-kaua hoped that this would result in a
marital alliance. Kuhio chose for his wife, Chiefess Elizabeth Ka-hanu Ka`auwai. Regrettably, the
union was a love match that produced no children.
Unfortunately for Kuhio, all of his chances
for ascending to the throne were dashed with the
overthrow of the monarchy in 1893. Two years
later, the prince, affectionately known as “Prince
Cupid,” a royalist, was arrested for treason for
plotting a counterrevolutionary attempt. He spent
the next two years in jail as a political prisoner.
Upon his release, he and his wife traveled extensively throughout Europe and were treated as
visiting royalty.
