Emily Horsfall Block 15 NUS manifesto

ELECT EMILY
FOR BLOCK OF 15
Hi, I'm Emily, the Union Development and Democracy
Officer at KeeleSU.
I’m standing for NUS Block of 15 because I believe it is vital that we have a strong NEC that listens
to our unions to lead the student movement through such a turbulent time in education.
With exiting the European Union on one side, and the HE Bill on the other, our institutions are under
attack. It has never been so important to have a united voice to fight for the rights of students.
1. It is no longer good enough for only elected officers to feel part of our national movement: NUS needs to
be relevant to all students, and be recognisable as a representative organisation, not just a discount card. We
need a united NEC whose actions visibly benefit the 7 million students NUS represents in Further and Higher
Education institutions across the country. 2. I will prioritise the voter registration campaign; young people are continuously ignored in politics and we
need to make sure they have a legitimate voice on a national stage.
3. I will make it a priority of NEC to make getting involved in decision making as easy as possible, with
more notice of deadlines and less hackery. We need to make sure all the actions we take are accessible and
affordable to our members, and making sure that impact is as high as possible.
4. I will make sure our zones and regional networks are supported and empowered to collect students
views and send best practise to NUS. We should be linking up campuses that are facing similar challenges and
facilitating conversations between them.
5. We need to constructively engage with and lobby the government at any opportunity we get, and have
the trust of our members to be prioritising their issues nationally.

I'm standing as a Labour Students candidate as I believe they are the party of social
justice and equality and that is reflected in my values. However, I will always put
the interests of students first and I am not scared of disagreeing with my party.
