The project structure includes work at different levels of participation: National – each partner was asked to consult other representative professional and academic institutions from their Country; Regional – the 20 participating Countries were grouped into seven regions, listed below, according to their specificities in terms of veterinary aims and needs, or previous work on veterinary education; each of these regions has a co-ordinator. The identification of key issues within the veterinary profession is addressed and the main points of similarity and major differences are identified in each region. Although the Universities aim at producing a graduate of identified comparably high standards of training, diversity of curricula must be encouraged to incorporate an optional part, although maintaining a “basic” competence in all fields of Veterinary Science. It is well known that there will never be a definitive or ideal curriculum, because the education of veterinarians must be permanently adapted to changes in the profession and to new demands from the society. Educational strategies, which facilitate the development of different ways and levels of learning, emerge, are transformed, disappear and re-emerge in novel forms. It is the major objective of this network to identify different European region market and social needs for the year 2020, in order to improve curriculum development/harmonisation and to propose adaptations to meet requirements of the profession at all levels of intervention. The main activities involve the identification of present key issues of veterinary involvement and the study the possible evolution of veterinary social intervention, from and within the main areas of activity in order to achieve the major outcome of harmonisation of educational strategies adjustments involving curriculum development. UK & Ireland Portugal & Spain NL, Belgium & France Germany, Poland & Romania Austria, Czech Rep., Slovak Rep., Slovenia & Hungary (VETNEST) Italy & Greece Norway, Sweden & Finland - - - General – every semester all partners have the opportunity to gather in a general meeting, where major outcomes of individual or group work is presented and discussed. Coordinators – The seven regional coordinators discuss the results of the respective meetings and prepare the strategic development of the project. Steering Committee - The project coordination and major issues are planned and analyzed in a more restricted group, the Steering Committee, which includes representatives from five partners, suggested in General meetings: Tito Fernandes, Josef Leibetseder, Chris Gaskell, Rudolf Leiser, Heriberto Rodriguez, Julie Fitzpatrick and Cristina Vilela. Activities during 2000/2001 (1st year) The activities developed during the first were focused on: 1) stimulating the project partners (one Institution per participating Country) to promote meetings at national level with the other veterinary teaching institutions, professionals, firms and governmental representatives, in order to contribute with the identification of European, national and regional specificities, recognizing similarities and contradictions 2) discussing the results of those meetings with partners from other Countries, grouped as “Regional meetings” 3) analyzing these outcomes at European level, in order to identify similarities and differences in terms of the foreseen needs. The major outputs were the identification of present and future areas of intervention of veterinarians, the main questions to be addressed in the market study questionnaire and the definition of the target groups for the inquiry. The main products generated during the first year are reports of the meetings, most of them distributed amongst all partners’ Institutions and available in the web. Activities for 2001/2002 (2nd year) VET2020 activities for the second year comprise the implementation of a market study on the future needs for the different veterinarian activities. An Italian firm (Nomisma) is presently developing the survey, working in close collaboration and supervision of the Steering Committee and all the other partner Institution coordinators. Following the analysis of data collected, partners will discuss identified problems and non-agreement issues. Common general frames for curriculum development will be established.
