Library Delft University of Technology Address Prometheusplein 1 2628 ZC Delft Netherlands http://www.library.tudelft.nl . The library is a building of glass and grass. The University district not only gains a library that is connected to the rest of the world by modern electronic means, but also the atmosphere of a campus. A vast lawn opposite the Brutalist concrete auditorium is tilted at one point; the library slides into the resulting space underneath. You can literally walk across the library. There are a thousand study spaces for more than three thousand students each day. A cone, the symbol of technical engineering, pierces the lawn and library, attaching them like a pushpin. Upon entering, visitors are drawn to the impressive wall of books that hangs in front of an expansive deep blue background. The columns in the central space not only support the structure but also provide heating and ventilation, and illuminate the continuous metal ceiling that flows across all spaces. Daylight enters the building through the climate-controlled glass facades, as well as through the cone in the central space. photo: Harry Cock . Project is public! . . . . . . . . . This student housing complex was designed for the DUWO Foundation. For a fast building process, a modular construction system was used. Each building is six storeys tall and is designed without an apparent front or rear. Three facades are finished in dark masonry laid with ‘beards’ of overflowing, excess mortar, their irregular texture resulting in a distinctive play of shadows on the facade. Deeply recessed window openings framed in aluminium are scattered in a playful pattern over the facades. Facing the park, the three buildings feature a green facade of composite panels combined with a tubular metal frame covered in climbing plants. Students can occupy the units alone or share with one other person. Three rooms are grouped around a shared living room with kitchen. Facilities such as the entrance, bicycle parking and garbage room are situated on the ground floor of each building. photo: Christian Richters . Project is not public! . . . . . . Department of Geotechnology Address Stevinweg 1 2628 CN Delft Netherlands http://www.citg.tudelft.nl/ . Delft University of Technology's new Department of Geotechnology, part of the school's faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences (CiTG), is housed in a building at one end of the CiTG complex, which was designed by Van den Broek en Bakema. The façade was stripped and given a new glass curtain wall imprinted with a pattern of stones sawed in half. Existing window cleaners' balconies were converted into bay windows equipped with built-in air conditioners. Slanting lines in the façade follow the spatial organization of the interior, a landscape of laboratories, workstations and study areas. Voids were added to connect existing floors and to represent transparency in the education provided here. Floors were enlarged by adding a new stairwell at one end of the building. Materials and colours derived from the original building were applied in a more 'virtual' manner. photo: Daria Scagliola . Project is public! . . . . . . . Media Library Address Vesteplein 100 2611 WG Delft Netherlands http://www.dok.info . This project is an interior concept in an existing shell - which is also being extensively renovated - for the Delft Multimedia Centre, part of the Public Libary. The centre consists of various sections and parts of the collection, all retaining their unique identity without losing touch of one another. The collection is split into different 'rooms' or 'shops' with various ambiances, ensuring the visitor makes a journey of discovery through the building. Colour and light are used to organise the orientation within the building and to emphasise the characteristic shell. The interior design is characterised by the use of many soft materials, to build a bridge between the visitor and the building's concrete shell. Soft seating elements, wonderful furniture, counters covered with leather, plenty of untreated MDF as a basic cabinet element. A frontal presentation of all media on each shelf of each cabinet is a new development, lending the library the atmosphere of a sales room. photo: Peter Varkevisser Photography . Project is public! . Dynamo Hall Address Prof. Snijdersstraat 5 2628 RA Delft Netherlands . Originally built around 1903, its purpose was to provide a dynamo testing facility for the adjoining faculty of Electrical Engineering and Physics. The space is determined by the travelling crane and the tracks in the floor which used to hold the dynamos in place. The combination of masonry, steel structures, high windows and skylights gives it the specific industrial character. When the faculty moved to its new accommodation along the Mekelweg, the building found new uses as a carpentry workshop, sports facility, and as storage space. Over the next few years, disused university buildings of the TU Delft in the area will be renovated into a hotel, apartments, student housing, restaurant and office space. The Dynamo Hall, which is the first object to be restored, has been given new use as the offices of the DP6 architecture studio. Alterations to the structure have been kept to a minimum to ensure that the unique atmosphere of the building is preserved, and even enhanced. photo: Jeroen Musch . Project is not public! . . . . . Centre Ypenburg Address Steentijdsingel 7 2496 SG Den Haag Netherlands http://www.ypenburg.nl/ . On the former airport Ypenburg, near Nootdorp, next to Delft, a large new neighbourhood has been built, with a clearly defined centre. A series of high-rise housing combined with commercial space was designed by Rapp + Rapp and has a very urban character, in stong contrast to the mainly single-family-dwelling set up of the rest of Ypenburg. The skyline of these marking towers glows in the dark and function as a beacon and general orientation as they are clearly visible from far away. The design is inspired by the Toscan city of San Gimignano with its (formerly 70, now) 13 medieval towers. These towers were built by upper class families who wanted to outshine each other by building an even higher tower. Apart from creating a wonderful new visual identity for Ypenburg, Rapp + Rapp succeeded in making interesting public space by narrowing the streets inbetween the towers. This way the dense urban feeling is enhanced. . Project is not public! . . . . . . . Waterwijk Ypenburg Address Stiemensvaart 48 2497 ZE Den Haag Netherlands http://waterwijk.ypenburg.nu/ . Hagen Island offers an attractive image, for consumption by a broad range of people. Clearly, the project does not aspire to appeal to just an elite group of artistic souls 'receptive' to such housing. Almost half the houses are for the rental sector, while the rest are for sale at prices of between 3.5 and 5.5 million guilders. One section of the neighbourhood is now inhabited and signs of domesticity are already visible - flower pots, paved paths, lace decorations. MVRDV styling, it would seem, has not influenced residents' preferences. The large sliding glass doors on each floor reveal the interiors ranging from curving plastic bedroom kitsch to Scandinavian timber cosiness. The greatest quality of these houses is just how smoothly they accommodate the everyday. Personal touches do not detract from the overall picture, as so often happens with housing schemes that aspire to the title Architecture. photo: Rositsa Andreeva . Project is not public! . Lyceum Ypenburg Address Laan van Kans 3 2496 VB Den Haag Netherlands http://www.lyceumypenburg.nl/ . At Ypenburg, the new branch of the Atlas College of Rijswijk occupies a characteristic location at the entrance to this brand-new residential area. The programme has been divided over four floors linked in space by large voids and staircases. The main plan of the building is straightforward, consisting of a ring of classrooms around a number of large lobbies. Daylight enters the spaces within the ring through skylights and patios. Within its deceptively simple and clear exterior, the building manages to create a many-faceted world of light, air and space that does justice to the theme of the Atlas College, ‘stirring splendour’. . Ypenburg Watervillas Address Van der Krukwater 2 2497 ZE Den Haag Netherlands . The borders of Dutch lakes are more and more colonized with private properties. They reduce public accessibility of the lake shores. In the Deelplan 10 area in Ypenburg, as part of MVRDV's master plan, a series of watervillas was positioned at the ends of the piers, peeking into a communal lake. MVRDV designed the four villas as single-storey units, with a roof deck on top, they can be glued together. This wooden amalgam can be lifted up to 12 metres high, allowing a water space underneath with private water decks, a parking lot, a dock for private boats, and a communal bench overlooking the lake, all positioned on wooden decks within the reed. The owners can jump from the sky deck through the house and down to the private part of the lake. Two elevator and stair cores allow this lifting act. A balancing figure appears (text from architect's website). photo: Piotr Krajewski . Project is not public! . Completion 2005 Architect MVRDV Contributed by pkrajewski_pl . . . Opening hours . Located in Ypenburg, The Hague, the NFI is a glazed volume in a steel box set in a typical Dutch motorway landscape. The building is a high security bulwark and an eye-catcher. It yields a corridor spread over four floors with cellular offices and laboratories. Size and location of each laboratory can be adapted to suit changing demands and conditions. The NFI has been cut open horizontally and seems to accommodate a glass volume. The steel box acts as solar shading. Light penetration is different on each side. The glass volume seems to lie just off centre because the steel cantilevers around the building are not equally deep. The architectural and spatial expressions of the interior are determined by material and colour. Form and space are virtually without properties, except in the part adjacent to the entrance, where an auditorium, library and conference room are stacked on top of one another. photo: Luuk Kramer .
