Apply the New Universal Rubric in the LOTE
Classroom
Scheduled for: Session: C
Description:
Based on the research and works of Marzano, Stiggins, Reeves and Guskey, the New Universal Rubric
System is student, parent and teacher friendly. It can easily be applied to the four skill areas, the Yes focus
of assessment in LOTE. A scoring system of 4, 3, 2,1, applied to all target skills (also at the university
level, in industry, and the arts) indicates a student's level of particular mastery as beyond expectations, on
level, below level, or not evident at all. The resulting data helps us as teachers to identify areas to target
for remediation, leading to step-by-step achievement toward eventual skill mastery. Participants will work
with multiple examples and have an opportunity to apply what they have learned.

Choosing Your Own Adventure in the LOTE
Classroom
Scheduled for: Session: A
Description:
In this workshop we will explore new ways to get students to interact with text in the classroom. Through
the use of PowerPoint and a projector, teachers can create and use text to make stories that have

using the target language to make decisions that may positively or negatively impact the story line.

Classroom Activities to Encourage Speaking
Scheduled for: Session: B
Description:
We can all use some engaging ideas that will get our students talking in the target language. Over the past
five years I have tried out a few that I have learned from other teachers. Some activities offer review
before a test or quiz and others are designed to get our students out of their chairs to mill about and talk in
real-world situations. The activities have some personal touches to keep students on task and engaged and
many of my classes have asked to do the activities again and again.

I GET IT! Strategies for Accessing Meaning in
Text
Exhibitor
EMC Publishing
Scheduled for: Session: A
Description:
As world language educators, we work tirelessly to offer our students opportunities to achieve second
language proficiency. We provide text, audio and video from which they can acquire meaning and then
tell them to listen, read, write and speak so that they can use what they have learned to create their own
messages. To effectively work with these media they need to have a wealth of maps and guides. Using
EMCs four level Aventura! Program, we will explore strategies that will improve comprehension and use
of language. Handouts will include activities that can be given to students the next class.

Given that getting students to think across subjects engages metacognitive thinking skills, LOTE classes
should serve as a vehicle for continued learning rather than being an end in and of themselves. Learn the
different structures for FLES units so that students use the TL in the service of learning science, history,

Maximizing the Use of the Target Language
Scheduled for: Session: D
Description:
Language teaching presents the unique challenge of teaching the content through the target language
(TL). As teachers, we should be working towards an appropriate, consistent, and balanced use of the TL
at all times. How do we overcome some students inhibitions, indifference or even outright hostility? How
much TL is to be used? The presentation will address key issues including the importance of getting into
good habits (i.e. setting the TL routine), differentiating and assessing the use of the TL in order to
improve students performance. This workshop will provide examples of successful techniques and
activities that aim to maximize the performance of all students in the TL.

Teaching in the Target Language: Issues and

language to the maximum possible extent. However, even the most capable and willing practioners may
not feel supported by peers, students, parents and or administrators in their endeavor to adhere to
proficiency-oriented teaching practices. This panel presentation offers guidance from methodologists and
administrators that will help those who attend blaze a trail from research and standards to policy and
practice. Following presentations from the panelists, there will be time allotted for Q&A.

As teachers take on the additional role of creating their own exams to assess checkpoint A and possibly
checkpoint B achievement, they face the challenge of crafting appropriate materials for testing the four
skills. Listening materials may be the most difficult to design. Workshop will focus on assisting and
inspiring teachers in the design of appropriate listening tasks for practice and assessment purposes,
especially in view of the disappearance of the proficiency and, increasingly, Regents Exams - examples in
French, open to all languages. Participants will have the opportunity to use materials provided by

TPR Storytelling Series- 3 of 5: Circling
Scheduled for: Session: C
Description:
Circling is a repetitive and engaging questioning technique used to deliver comprehensible input to
emphasize a vocabulary item or structure element during any lesson in any classroom. After attending
this session, you will be able to start using this effective skill in your classroom on Monday. Using
circling, a teacher’s goal is to repeat a structure or vocabulary item in such a way that students are
focusing on the content of the question rather than its structure. They hear the item over and over so that it
will simply “sound right” to them. In turn, the students acquire the item and eventually are able to use it
without thinking. It is especially effective when introducing new material.

TPR Storytelling Series-4 of 5: The Power of
Personalization
Scheduled for: Session: D
Description:
High interest is the key to engaging students, and what is more interesting to them than themselves?
Share the joy of language with your students by making it about them. Experience the power of
personalization with comprehensible input--language they understand. Participants in this workshop will
learn how to bring joy to the classroom, both for students and teacher, using a variety of techniques that
are student-centered and results-driven. In this workshop, we will discuss how personalization can help
with classroom management, give examples, and demonstrate how personalization can be used on day
one of a LOTE class as well as in teaching an advanced grammar lesson. Personalization is a skill that can
be applied to any target language classroom.
