This Month in History
October 1, 1908 - Henry Ford's Model T, a "universal car" designed for
the masses, went on sale.
October 8, 1871 - The Great Fire of Chicago erupted. According to
legend, it started when Mrs. O'Leary's cow kicked over a lantern in her
barn on DeKoven Street. The fire leveled 3.5 square miles.
October 14, 1912 - Former President Theodore Roosevelt was shot by
a fanatic while campaigning in Milwaukee. Roosevelt was saved by his
thick overcoat, a glasses case and a folded speech in his breast pocket.
Although wounded, he insisted on making the speech with the bullet
lodged in his chest and did not go to the hospital until the meeting
ended. Roosevelt, a rugged outdoorsman, fully recovered in two weeks.
October 22, 1962 - President John F. Kennedy appeared on television
to inform Americans of the existence of Russian missiles in Cuba. The
President demanded their removal and announced a naval "quarantine"
of Cuba. Six days later, the Russians announced they would remove the
weapons. In return, the U.S. later removed missiles from Turkey.

Serving One Another
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His
life as a ransom for many." (Mark 10:45)
A Christian, according to the Bible, is a follower of Jesus Christ. Jesus
said that if anyone would come after him they should take up their cross and
follow him. He said that if any of his followers desired to be first, they must
become the slave of all. In setting this example of taking on the nature of a
servant and washing his disciple’s feet during the last supper, Jesus showed
us how we can become great in God’s kingdom; By selflessly serving all men
as valuable in God’s eyes. In other words, it is the death of our self, our
dreams and our desires.
What a contrast to our worldly kingdoms and their leaders. As I
watched portions of the presidential debate last night I found my interest
waning. We will never find what we want from this world’s leaders. Our life
will only be found if we lose our lives for Jesus’ sake. The measure of a
Christian leader should not be whether or not they say the right things, but
rather if they put aside their own ambitions, dreams and selfish desires to
become the servants that Jesus has called them to be. I’m afraid these people
are often invisible in the eyes of this world, but that is ok. Their Father in
heaven will consider them great in the only kingdom that truly matters.
