Roosevelt was saved by his thick overcoat, a glasses case and a folded speech in his breast pocket. Roosevelt, a rugged outdoorsman, fully recovered in two weeks. October 22, 1962 - President John F. Kennedy appeared on television to inform Americans of the existence of Russian missiles in Cuba. The President demanded their removal and announced a naval "quarantine" of Cuba. Six days later, the Russians announced they would remove the weapons. (Mark 10:45) A Christian, according to the Bible, is a follower of Jesus Christ. Jesus said that if anyone would come after him they should take up their cross and follow him. He said that if any of his followers desired to be first, they must become the slave of all. In setting this example of taking on the nature of a servant and washing his disciple’s feet during the last supper, Jesus showed us how we can become great in God’s kingdom; By selflessly serving all men as valuable in God’s eyes. In other words, it is the death of our self, our dreams and our desires. What a contrast to our worldly kingdoms and their leaders. As I watched portions of the presidential debate last night I found my interest waning. We will never find what we want from this world’s leaders. Our life will only be found if we lose our lives for Jesus’ sake. The measure of a Christian leader should not be whether or not they say the right things, but rather if they put aside their own ambitions, dreams and selfish desires to become the servants that Jesus has called them to be. I’m afraid these people are often invisible in the eyes of this world, but that is ok. Their Father in heaven will consider them great in the only kingdom that truly matters.
