Battle card Guiding questions • What brands of supplies does your business use? • How often does your business need to reprint poor-quality documents? • What are your environmental goals as a business? • What does your company do with cartridges once they’re empty? Overcoming objections Help your customers see that Original HP cartridges are a better environmental choice for their business than remanufactured cartridges. Here are some possibilities for how your conversation might go. Objection: I’m already being environmentally responsible by using remanufactured cartridges. Answer: You may think you’re being responsible, but remanufactured cartridges often cause wasteful reprints due to poor print quality.4 On average, 34% of the inspected pages produced by non-HP toner cartridges during testing were of limited use.3 Paper use during printing— not manufacturing or production—is the greatest contributor to the environmental impact of toner cartridges.5 Compared with non-HP cartridges, Original HP LaserJet toner cartridges deliver superior quality and reliability, which often means fewer reprints and less paper use.4 Objection: Recycling cartridges is a hassle and can cost money. Answer: HP has changed all of that for its customers. Recycling your cartridges through HP Planet Partners is easy, convenient, and free. In fact, HP provides pre-addressed, postage-paid return labels online for free and in every new Original HP LaserJet toner cartridge box. Just put your used HP cartridge in the original box, attach the mailing label, and send it off. You can tape up to eight cartridges together or request boxes or pallet pickup at hp.com/recycle. You can even return used individual cartridges to HP authorized retail recycling locations— at no cost to you.1 Objection: I use remanufactured cartridges, which keeps used cartridges out of the landfill. Objection: The cartridges I use are remanufactured—isn’t that the same as recycled? Answer: No—remanufacturing isn’t even close to recycling. In fact, the only thing remanufacturing guarantees is that the cartridge has been torn apart and put back together. By contrast, HP’s groundbreaking “closed loop” recycling process uses plastic from recycled Original HP cartridges and other sources as raw materials to create new Original HP cartridges. In 2012, with the help of HP customers, the HP Planet Partners program used 18.7 million pounds of recycled plastic—the equivalent of keeping almost 900 full garbage trucks out of landfills.7 Answer: Remanufacturers may claim that their cartridges are good for the environment, but the numbers prove that remanufacturing rarely prevents cartridges from ending up in landfills. According to a 2011 study, more than 94% of toner cartridges sold by remanufacturers surveyed will ultimately end up in a landfill because most remanufacturers fail to collect their own products and do not have recycling capabilities for cartridges that can’t be profitably remanufactured.6 5 A Four Elements Consulting 2011 study, commissioned by HP, compared Original HP LaserJet CB436A and CC364A black toner cartridges with a sample of remanufactured alternatives across eight impact categories.
